Fox News host Banderas called Obama a "Halfrican"

February 13, 2008 7:23 pm ET

On the February 10 edition of Fox News' Red Eye, Fox News host Julie Banderas referred to Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) as a "Halfrican." Obama is the son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas. Host Greg Gutfeld asked Banderas, who said she is of Colombian descent, "[D]o minorities hate other minorities?" Banderas responded: "I have something in common with Obama, and I don't even know what the big deal is. He's a Halfrican anyway, so I'm not really quite sure why the Asians and the Hispanics have no -- you know, have a problem with him."

Banderas hosts The Big Story Weekend on Fox News and regularly guest-hosts other programs on the network. Conservative media figures such as radio hosts Rush Limbaugh and Brian Sussman have also used the term "Halfrican" to describe Obama. Sussman later apologized for using the term.

From the February 10 edition of Fox News' Red Eye:

GREG GUTFELD (host): Now check out this, there's a white guy in this actually doing a black power salute somewhere. There it is. I mean, what are you doing?

[crosstalk]

GUTFELD: I don't know who he is. I don't know who that is. Greg Wilson, do you know who that is?

WILSON: I have no idea who that is. You know, personally, I was offended that it was in black-and-white.

GUTFELD: Really?

BILL SCHULZ (Fox News contributor): I think we're past that, you're right.

WILSON: I was like, what about the Mexican vote? What about the Asian votes? It's just for blacks and whites?

BANDERAS: That's why they didn't vote for him.

GUTFELD: That's true, I was going to get to that. They really - apparently that was the - do minorities hate other minorities? You're a minority.

BANDERAS: Latinos and Asians --

SCHULZ: Half of her.

BANDERAS: Well, because I think it's a -- well, I have something in common with Obama, and I don't even know what the big deal is. He's a Halfrican anyway, so I'm not really quite sure why the Asians and the Hispanics have no -- you know, have a problem with him.

SCHULZ: What does that make you? A Halombian?

BANDERAS: A Halfrilombian. A Halfricanlombian.

GUTFELD: What are you?

SCHULZ: Colombian.

BANDERAS: I'm half Colombian, half American.

SCHULZ: Greg, we all know she's Colombian.

I would love for some moronic right winger to now explain to me how this isn't a racist statement.  Fox "News" tows the right wing line once again.

I don't know if Banderas is racist or not, but I don't think her use of "halfrican" makes her racist, especially when she calls herself "halfrilombian".  I see it as a term that is actually more informative than something like "biracial" and kind of amusing.  As a fiercely progressive left wing liberal, I find myself growing weary of the recent fad of attaching unintended meaning and significance to relatively innocuous terms, just to take umbrage for political purposes.  It makes the "Left" look like we have a gigantic chip on our shoulder/stick up out butt.  The bigger question, to me, is:  why is MMFA bothering to critique this show?  Do they actually think that people are watching and are influenced by those goofy idiots?  (BTW:  whether she's racist or not, I would totally hit that.  Is that sexist?)

"Half-breed" and its variants are considered pejorative, pretty much across the board.  I agree with you that language can sometimes be overpoliced, but I don't think that's the case here.

Not to mention that the "white guy" that they're making funny at the beginning isn't a white guy and he's not doing a "black power salute." That's Adam Rodriguez, an actor of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent, saying, "Si, se puede."

An offensive racist would say he's  mulatto.  Civilized people, if they felt the compelling need to describe him as such, would probably use a term such as biracial or multi-ethnic, whichever is appropriate.

I'm saying that considerate, thinking people find the term "hafrican" offensive. It's a racial slur.

And incidentally, most people find the archaic slavery-era term "mulatto" to be offensive as well. It's derived from the Latin "mulus" (mule), as in a work animal bred from a horse and a donkey.

Nothing new here ... I've come across this train wreck of a show on a rumber of occasions. A Chuck Norris infomercial is usually a better bet. It's a collection of brain-fried D-list wannabes saying nothing about nothing, usually.

No this is the way serious female hosts of news shows dress, don't you know.

It was a laughing orgy of racism.  They wallow in it. Much worse when seen on video than simply read as text.

Why do you even bother coming to this site?

I have yet to read anything from you that is in any concievable way relevant to any thread or any specific post since the first time you showed up here!

All I see from you are childish quips, zero arguments and 100% lifeless postings! Are you an intern for Rush Limbaugh or BillO?

So it has begun... the racist crap! And on the "F" word channel! Why am I not surprised? And as for Banderas? What a joke. She obviously suffers from the same inferiority complex as the guy she fills in for on the weekend (John whatshisname). I love the way she tries to save herself with the "I am half Colombian" line... Nice try sweetheart but no dice.

My question is, why are they doing the show on lacation at Caroline's Comedy Hour circa 1988.  I expected to see Howie Mandel show up to blow up a surgical glove on his head sporting his old school curly mullet.

I have a math question, Im white, and my wife is black, or I guess "Halfrican" and she's pregnant with our first child. So, what does that make my kid? How do they let these morons on the air? This is something I'd expect to hear in a Cris Rock routine (he might even be able to pull it off) but not on what is supposed to pass for a news show.

YAWN...  This joke is old already.  Red Eye is pretty much insomnia cure television.  The only reason any red-blooded Mexican-American male would watch this tripe is because they always sit the pick of the hot Fox chickenheads stables closest to the camera.  Those ladies got some gams on 'em, I tell you what!  The free gam-show notwithstanding, this cavalcade of j-list comedy luminaries is pretty painful to watch.

Seriously, though, I think my issue with this type of misinformation (?) is that, like Michael Savage's allusions to negative Jewish stereotypes, it legitimizes the use and circulation of terms like "Halfrican" or "old yenta" amongst people I don't think are mentally prepared or qualified to handle them.  I heard a ten year-old Mexican-American student at my school refer to himself as a "beaner" recently and had to really unload on him.  His rationale? The wack comedian Carlos Mencia uses it all the time and that he, the student, is a beaner.  I shudder to think how many racists are similarly getting their jollies off call people like me "beaner" behind our back.  They might be thinking it's okay to do so.  And minorities are too sensitive, right?  I do love me my beans.

Will this hot little firecracker's dumb little comment open up a discussion on who can use what terms in America?  I certainly doubt it.  But I also doubt the dumb word "Halfrican" is being used in front of people who fit the description.  The fact that it's so old and still getting laughs with these hacks kind of tells me it's been in wide circulation is some circles, know what I mean?

Doesn't sound like there's too much diversity around the Fox News Studios, does it?  Which is kind of weird considering the whole "we-are-being-invaded" thing.  That these a$$clowns set up their little bit like minorities in America are these alien beings.

Let's ask the Halfrilombian why the Mexicans and the Asians hate the Blacks.  Real fair and blanced there, idiot.
