EMBED

While discussing the expiration of the Protect America Act (PAA) on the February 18 edition of his CNN Headline News show, Glenn Beck claimed: "[President Bush] feels -- and I happen to agree with him -- that this congressional game-playing by [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi will end up killing Americans." The blog Think Progress documented Beck's comments in a February 19 posting.

As Media Matters for America has repeatedly documented, on February 13, the House of Representatives voted on a 21-day extension of the PAA, which amended the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and, among other things, expanded the government's authority to eavesdrop on Americans' domestic-to-foreign communications without a warrant. All 195 House Republicans who cast a vote on the extension of the bill -- which Bush had said he would veto -- voted against it, and the measure failed, 229-191.

Pelosi noted in a February 13 statement that "the underlying Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which provides for the surveillance of terrorists and provides that in emergencies surveillance can begin without warrant, remains intact and available to our intelligence agencies."

From the February 18 edition of CNN Headline News' Glenn Beck:

BECK: Now, after 9-11, you remember we came up with all kinds of new -- aggressive new laws to combat a new kind of enemy. One of them was the Patriot Act. Another one was the Protection -- Protect America Act. This was an extension of our eavesdropping. It helped our government listen in and find terrorists.

Well, over the weekend, the House failed to pass this bill, which would have prevented the Protect America Act from lapsing -- an extension requested by the president. It's got a six-month sunset over and over again. He feels -- and I happen to agree with him -- that this congressional game-playing by Nancy Pelosi will end up killing Americans.

Now, what could be even more terrifying than that fact is that Congress may be acting with re-election in mind and not your safety. Critics are saying now that the House caved to special-interest groups, mostly trial lawyers who want the rights to sue these big, huge phone companies that release sensitive information to the government.

Speaking of killing Americans, someone help me out.

How many DEATHS of Americans has GW Bush been responsible for?

The 3000 on 9/11, that happened after NINE SOLID MONTHS of Bush totally ignoring the issue of terrorism, taking NO action to prevent or detect any plans, and further ignoring multiple warnings.

In my view, that blood is on HIS hands.

Then there's the 4000 dead so far in Iraq, sent there on FALSE rationales and based on LIES, following a NEW "preemptive strike" WAR policy Bush invented himself. Their deaths are absolutely his responsibility.

Then there's the 30,000+ soldiers who are dismembered and maimed, their lives will never be the same. This is not only a result of Bush starting an unnecessary WAR, but also by FAILING to properly equip our troops, by failing to send sufficient numbers of troops to get the job done, and by having INCOMPETENT LEADERSHIP (Rummy) directing the mission. All that blood and suffering is entirely on Bush, entirely his responsibility.

Then there's anywhere from 100,000 to a MILLION innocent Iraqis who have been "liberated to death". All on BUSH, their blood on HIS hands.

So yeah, Beck, by all means, let's talk about getting Americans killed. YOU were a big BUSH supporter, weren't you, BECK? I guess that means you SHARE the responsibility for all this senseless, needless death and suffering. Congrats.

[I realize, BECK, that the enormous growth-market for Rightwing Cheerleaders has provided you with a wonderful career. So there WAS a silver lining to this blood-soaked legacy, wasn't there? OTHERS have died, but you're doing GREAT. Haliburton's doing great as well, and Exxon.]

Or is it that allowing civil actions against the telecoms will kill Americans? I dunno...I'm confused. Either way, though, Nancy Pelosi is at fault, right? Or are the trial lawyers at fault? Maybe gay people are at fault too if Americans die. Regardless, Saint George of the Bush bears no responsibility whatsoever, right? I think it's becoming clearer now... ;>)

Yeah Beav, it’s all about wanting “to sue these big, huge phone companies” – it’s always about money. ONLY IF YOU’RE A REPUBLICAN.  It has nothing to do with the Constitution or individual right to privacy? Do you even mention either of the two REAL issues at hand here?

Snoop, thanks for the reminder, I saw Jacoby on Moyers show this weekend, and meant to pick up her book.

It's been interesting hearing the righty media go after Obama, equating "hope" with "wishful thinking" and "faith". The Oxymoron even tried to twist it into people "hoping" the government takes care of everything, as opposed to conservatives who have "desire", which of course, motivates them to action.

I think the real contrast is that the conservative line is not so much aspiring for improvement, but pretending ecerything's OK, and settling for a comfortable status quo.

I have to admit, I missed the military presence we used to have hear, with the video game heroes (Col. Roy Campbell, Gen. Jack T. Ripper), so I decided to give myself a promotion.

I thought of starting as a private (Parkin, Pardy or Idaho), I considered Corporal Punishment , Major Malfunction, General Mills or Mayhem. Then as I was finally getting logged on, a KFC ad came on the tube, and I realized Col. Sanders had been completely eliminated from the business. It's a tribute to that fine man.

Actually, let's look at this in a rational manner as to this arse-hat's comment here. He says that not letting Bush wiretap without a warrant will end up killing Americans. Let's rewind a little bit. We now know that BEFORE 9/11, the Bush administration was wiretapping people without warrants. This has come out in the news lately. Then, we had the attacks of 9/11. Mr. Dissent's argument holds no water. Why? Because if this was required to protect Americans, then 9/11 wouldn't have happened, therefore his argument is illogical and false. The actual facts back up that he's a fool, instead of just his words, which are normally enough.

Enough with the trial lawyers garbage.  Most of those suits are not going to cost the telcos a dime because they lack standing and they fail to show damages.  For all I care the congress can go ahead and pass out a total retroactive CIVIL liability clause.

But leave them on the hook for criminal charges because that is the real power in this case.  The telcos are just the minions of a criminal administration and leaving them open to criminal charges is the only way to get them to cooperate in an investigation of just how this program was really used and abused.

Not to mention that the case brought by the ACLU was thrown out because you couldn't prove who was wiretapped or not, because the current administration is not going to give out that information. So the lawsuits would be pointless to pursue at this time, even if the telecoms didn't have immunity, which they shouldn't.

Whatever happened to republicans talking about the terrorists being responsible for people being killed? I remember this as a succint talking point back around 9/11 when criticisms were being leveled at George W. Bush for not paying attention to terrorism and all, and we were told, in no uncertain terms, that the TERRORISTS were responsible for these deaths, and not George W. Bush and his "asleep at the wheel" approach that he took against terrorism at the time.

The experts also told us that another 9/11 was likely to eventually happen again...that further terrorist attacks on America were inevitable regardless of the precautions we take. If another terrorist attack occurs tomorrow does that mean that Bush's illegal spying program failed to protect us or will they blame Nancy Pelosi? Considering that a 9/11-type attack takes years in the planning perhaps perhaps we are due for another attack in this election year. If we get hit this year perhaps Republicans will be in favor of rounding up all Americans for questioning and fingerprinting.

Senator Rockefeller, hardly your typical conservative, was quoted as saying that failure to pass the bill has already degraded our intelligence gathering ability.  He focused primarily on the liability issue pertaining to the telcos.  He said they are refusing to cooperate where it is not clear that they have no liability, and well they should.

Personally, I don't care.  As I wrote earlier, any attack is likely to be in a large city, like ny, boston, chicago, la, sf, etc.  these cities have decidedly liberal majorities, so most of the casualties will be liberals.  can't complain about that.

Irony does not serve to excuse the comments nor as a "get out of jail free card", rather it just indicates that the comment should be taken with a grain of good humor and understanding.

Hstybf said:"these cities have decidedly liberal majorities, so most of the casualties will be liberals.  can't complain about that."

It is ironic that those who are most most anti-war and do not reprimand those that would kill them would be the ones first killed if the terrorists exerted their full capabilities on one of our densely populated cities. It is ironic because there is a concentration of liberals in large cities that are the greatest targets.

I do not think that Hstybf was engaging in trolling as you defined it, certainly his comment may have been off-topic to the original article but i believe he was opening new discussion rather then derailing the current one. This is a free board where a difference of opinion presented in an intelligent fashion serves to add greater interest to an otherwise boring cacophony of liberal back-scratching.

BUNK irony is saying something when you mean something DIFFERENT than you mean for contrast and often the opposite of what you mean. What he was saying was he wouldnt complain if a city filled mostly with liberals was attacked so a lot of liberals would DIE. That is not ironic. Hateful, ignorant, stupid, soulless, all those things irony NO. Your ignorant take on liberals not criticising terrorists is not only more of your patented abject stupidity its also way overdone. We know your hivemind masters told you to believe this and repeat it whenever possible but its just stupid and reaffirms what a fool you are. Hstryvrmin was showing his lack of basic decency and ignorance, just like you are showing yours defending such a lack. He was being a troll saying something provacative with no other purpose but to dig at us and derail the thread. It really isnt our fault you are too dumb to see the obvious.

        HstyBuff, R.I.P.

In the end, you can't help but feel sorry for anybody who's so twisted apart by hate that he'd write something like that.  He's not amusing, he's certainly not going to bring any (rational) person over to his point of view, and he's going to alienate any legitimate conservatives.

A moment of silence, please, for HstyBuff's credibility.  From now on, it would be best to ignore his every utterance.  He is beyond help.

        Hsty,

You are a sick, sick man.  I care if liberals, conservatives or any people are killed.  Take your racism and hate elsewhere, please.

The trifecta, IGNORANT provocation. Stupidity galore. Hatefully and gleefully wishing death on his fellow countrymen. You are the epitome of the ignorant troll. Go away and let the adults talk

Don't you live in LA? Or did you move back to Texas? So as long as liberals get killed it's OK? Was 9.11 OK then since a majority of New Yorkers vote democrat in their ballots? Same for DC? It was OK because there are a majority of democrats living in those areas? Come on now, you made the assertion, so buck up, take credit for past attacks being OK already.

I'd LOVE to see you walk through "liberal" Boston and run your mouth, and then watch you get stomped down and beat like a red headed step child (no offense meant to red headed step children sincerly, just using a turn of phrase if you will). I love psedo tough conservatives like yourself, who would pee their pants at the first sign of an altercation, of course, you'd probably threaten them with a lawsuit (being the lawyerly lawyer that you are), and then tell them that you know some famous people, and you'd still get beat down.

are you saying that liberals concentrated in large cities are unnaturally violent that they would put aside their mask of tolerance and attack Hstybf?

It is interesting, the hypocrisy. the supposedly most tolerant of dogmas [liberalism] is the one that exacts the most hate upon a disliked point of view.

You didnt have a point. There is nothing hypocrical about stating the obvious fact that if the coward were to tell people to thier FACE he wanted them dead it might have consequences. You WISH you had a point you are desperate to show your dumb hivemind inspired vision of liberals is somehow connected to reality. It isnt you are delusional. If you want to have some aquaintence with reality you need to become unassimalated. Stop repeating the stupid rightwing talking points. Stop portraying liberals in the ignorant rightwing stereotypes or remain captive of you delusions.

If Glenn Beck actually believed his own comments, he'd be just as critical towards the president for insisting on immunity for telecommunications companies.  If he actually had a principled belief that people would die as a result of not passing this legislation, he'd cry out for the Congress and President to come up with some sort of compromise and quick.

Don't you get it?  This is "Coulter-humor."  Kill liberals, poison Supreme Court justices, blow up the NY Times.  You know, funny stuff!  If you are not laughing then you simply have no sense of humor.
