Olbermann named NPR's Rudin "Worst Person" for comparing Clinton to Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction

April 29, 2008 1:46 pm ET

On Countdown, Keith Olbermann named Ken Rudin the "winner" of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for asserting: "[F]irst of all, let's be honest here, [Sen.] Hillary Clinton is Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. She's going to keep coming back, and they're not going to stop her." Olbermann commented: "[A]fter comparing Senator Clinton to the insane, murderous, kidnapping, stalking, knife-wielding, suicidal, bunny-boiling character of Alex Forrest, who has to be drowned and shot to be finally stopped in Fatal Attraction, even the harshest critic of Senator Clinton is probably beginning to think, you know, that might be a little harsh. Maybe an apology is in order."

During the April 28 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named National Public Radio political editor Ken Rudin the "winner" of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for asserting, as Media Matters for America documented, "[F]irst of all, let's be honest here, [Sen.] Hillary Clinton is Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. She's going to keep coming back, and they're not going to stop her." Olbermann observed: "On CNN yesterday, he broke a new bar. 'First of all,' he said, thus forgetting rule one, any time your statement begins with 'first of all,' stop immediately. It's a bad idea whatever it is. 'First of all, let's be honest here,' he said. 'Hillary Clinton is Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. She's going to keep coming back, and they're not going to stop her,' unquote." Olbermann continued: "[A]fter comparing Senator Clinton to the insane, murderous, kidnapping, stalking, knife-wielding, suicidal, bunny-boiling character of Alex Forrest, who has to be drowned and shot to be finally stopped in Fatal Attraction, even the harshest critic of Senator Clinton is probably beginning to think, you know, that might be a little harsh. Maybe an apology is in order." He concluded: "Instead, a full minute later, Mr. Rudin wrapped up his guest appearance by adding, quote, 'She'll say, look I'm in it until the end. And I expect her to be in it until the end, as Glenn Close was.' OK, I'm not seeing any contrition here."

Additionally, Olbermann awarded Tim Graham, director of media analysis for the Media Research Center, the "silver" for writing that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) "show[ed] she's more of a shallow politician than a devout Christian" when she called the Dalai Lama "His Holiness," without mentioning that President Bush has done the same, as Media Matters also noted. Olbermann stated: "Graham apparently was unaware that when the pope was in Washington two weeks ago, another politician addressed him as 'Holy Father,' and when the Dalai Lama was there last autumn, the same politician addressed him as 'Your Holiness' and referred to him three times as 'His Holiness.' That other politician who Graham might observe matches Pelosi's, quote, 'promiscuous definitions of holiness' and shows he too is 'more of a shallow politician than a devout Christian'? That guy would be President Bush."

From the April 28 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: Our silver winner tonight, Tim Graham, part of the little Brent Bozell witch's kitchen known as the Media Research Center and NewsBusters. Graham, identified as the director of media analysis, blogged about how House Speaker Nancy Pelosi referred to both Pope Benedict and the Dalai Lama as "His Holiness." "At best," writes Graham, "Pelosi's promiscuous definitions of holiness just show she's more of a shallow politician than a devout Christian."

Graham apparently was unaware that when the pope was in Washington two weeks ago, another politician addressed him as "Holy Father," and when the Dalai Lama was there last autumn, the same politician addressed him as "Your Holiness" and referred to him three times as "His Holiness." That other politician who Graham might observe matches Pelosi's, quote, "promiscuous definitions of holiness" and shows he too is "more of a shallow politician than a devout Christian"? That guy would be President Bush.

The nice thing about being on the opposite side of the war with the Media Research-NewsBusters crowd is they're really stupid.

But our winner, NPR political reporter Ken Rudin. On CNN yesterday, he broke a new bar. "First of all," he said, thus forgetting rule one, any time your statement begins with "first of all," stop immediately. It's a bad idea whatever it is. "First of all, let's be honest here," he said. "Hillary Clinton is Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. She's going to keep coming back, and they're not going to stop her," unquote.

Greeted by a disbelieving, "What, Ken?" He added, "Well, we'll figure that out, there's a lot of ways to imagine that."

Look, you can choose a bad analogy. You can really screw it up. You can even say something innocent and clichéd and it comes out sounding utterly inappropriate. Trust me, I did the latter. But after comparing Senator Clinton to the insane, murderous, kidnapping, stalking, knife-wielding, suicidal, bunny-boiling character of Alex Forrest, who has to be drowned and shot to be finally stopped in Fatal Attraction, even the harshest critic of Senator Clinton is probably beginning to think, you know, that might be a little harsh. Maybe an apology is in order.

Instead, a full minute later, Mr. Rudin wrapped up his guest appearance by adding, quote, "She'll say, look I'm in it until the end. And I expect her to be in it until the end, as Glenn Close was." OK, I'm not seeing any contrition here. Ken Rudin of NPR, at the movies, so to speak, today's "Worst Person in the World."

              Tommy and Jeter,

I think the request by Gov is legit...... you seem to want to bash KO for his appearent Hillary bashing and that that somehow means that KO loses his right to call out others..... Ko isn't perfect but he is the closest we have to a real newsman and certainly has made his fair share of mistakes.....

But that does not, by any means mean that KO loses his rights to opinions...... But like Gov asked..... prove your opinion on this matter to back up your thoughts?  It's the least you should do.

                Capt,

Speaking for me, not Jeter, Keith has the right to call out whomever he wants too, as do the rest of us in labeling him one-sided, and a hypocrite - that is our right.  And Keith is hardly a "newsman", he is a demogogue, a partisan hack, who only has guests on his show that agree with him and reinforce his opinions.  He is the left's mirrored answer to Sean Hannity, and others like him........sorry, that is my opinion.

And Keith has every right to his opinion, it's his show and he can share those opinions as freely as the rest of us do.  I applaud his freedoms, just as I do ours.

Really, Keith has been bashing Hillary for months. He has said stupid stuff and I quit watching him. That being said, he was right in this instance. Well, our limericks were way off topic. But there are some party poopers on this site that want everything to be serious all the time. So much of this stuff is so repetitive (not saying it shouldn't be here), but it gets boring. I'll admit to getting a little carried away with the fun. That's why I usually try to stay on topic with my limericks, but they aren't as fun sometimes.

Ahh but Capt, Jeter could say the same thing if he listens to Rush to many of the people here (not necessarily you.)  Saying all Rush listeners are mindless or what have you is doing the same thing.  It's an easy way to characterize a group of people through insult and dismiss their opinion as irrelevant.  It's why I don't engage in that type of labelling.

On a side note, I watch KO most nights, and I find him refreshing in the face of most of what Fox News has to offer, or CNN, or much of the rest of MSNBC.  Him and Abrams.  Though I'd venture to say Abrams is more balanced.

                Dbeden,

While I applaud you for not labeling all Limbaugh listeners as ditto heads, most of your Liberal compatriots here do.

While I usually try to refrain from labeling folks, IMO, anyone that defends either Rush or Limbaugh--no matter what they say--are lemmings.

                That was my point.

For Keith to call out others for knocking Hillary is a joke as that's all he's done for months.

Even Keith fans should be able to agree with that. If they don't...they are lemmings.

Jeter, like I said below, he has portrayed Obama more favorably more often than not.  But he's defended Hillary too these past few months, and on occasion does say something nice about her.  And no, I'm not apologizing for the man, but I do watch him regularly so I believe I have a fairly accurate portrait of his news casts over-all.

And to further your point, anyone who blindly follows anyone or anything without question is a lemming.  In truth, I haven't really seen anyone on here who thinks KO is always right, and everything he says is true.  There are shades of gray in everything.

Calling someone out when they reference another person using Glen Close's charactor in Fatal Attraction is nothing what so ever by which KO calls out Hillary for whatever...... at no time what so ever has KO come close to the same stereotype about Hillary as this clown did using a rabbit boiling vengeful woman.   KO is not  a fan of Hillary to be sure, but I don't for a second believe that he thinks of her in those terms and your argument seems to be attempting to make that connection.

If you think that its the same or if I'm wrong and you can point that out.....I'm all bunny ears!  :)

I agree with Jeter on this one. Keith has been bashing Hillary for months. He recently compared Hillary's Pennsylvania ad to the hit job on Max Cleland, he has mocked her on numerous occasions, and rarely (if ever) gives the Hillary side of a story, it always slanted against her.

I have zero problems with him criticizing Senator Clinton, I'm voting for Obama in my primary next week just for the record. I don't agree with a lot of the things that she's said, and or done, and or stands for in her campaign. But he did say something about someone taking her into a back room, and only one person comes out.

Do I really think that Olbermann wants to beat up Hillary physically? No. Was it a stupid comment? Yes. Was the Fatal Attraction comment stupid as well? Yes. Maybe if he had called himself out for his stupid comment, I would lend an ear to this one in his WPITW segment, but in this case, when he said something as bad, or maybe worse than the comment he featured, it just rings, hollow. It stinks of WPITW segment jumping the shark so to speak.

Maybe he should just stop doing it, and move on, and do some real reporting as I know that he can.

I was paraphrasing what he said.

Wasn't it something about taking her out back or into a back room, with the intention that she was to get a beat down from someone?

"Right. Somebody who can take her into a room and only he comes out." When they were talking about super delegates and all. Now was his comment mis-construed, or something like that? Maybe, but hey, he, of the WPITW should know better, since he normally takes people to task for comments such as he made, such as what he did about someone comparing Senator Clinton to Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction.

There wasn't or isn't much difference between the 2. Maybe what he should have done, as others have suggested, would be to give HIMSELF the WPITW award for making such a stupid comment. That would have endeared him even more to the folks that love him so.

At some point in the extraordinaryly busy Inauguration day of January 20, 2008, the newly Sworn 44th President of the United States will find time to sit down with Joint Chiefs of Staff... and as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces, the new President will want to hear the various Chiefs of Staff's comprehensive opinions, on the present position of those more than 100,000 U.S. Troops occupying the nation of Iraq, and of their mission there (of what their mission is, and of what it should be, from that day forward)...

And as the newly Sworn 44th U.S. President settles in, to hear what the Chiefs of Staff think (and before he or she pronounces his or her Policy opinion, or Command, as Commander in Chief), and as the new Commander in Chief begins by recognizing first the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and asks his opinion first, by saying

"OK then men, Mr. Chairman I'll start with you, what is your professional opinion of the specific situation in..."

"Whoa whoa whoa!" Says the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. "Hold on there New Guy (or Gal) On The Job, be you Boss or whoever I don't care... there's a few important things need clearing up first: like, what about your Reverend? What's that incendiary fool's opinion about all things, most of all about America?

What about flag pins, and strange middle names and first names that sound like a terrorist's name, and did I or did I not see a picture of you on the news, wearing a bedsheet and a towel on your head and what was that all about anyway?

We'll get to the lesser matter of Iraq soon enough, but first thing's first, and what's really important is really important: Are you as crazy as they say you are, Madam President, as crazy as they say you are on cable television? And would you now or have you ever, boiled alive a bunny rabbit?"

        Umm, hey dunderhead.

Do you know anyone that was running for President who didn't really want it (aside from Thompson of course)?

Don't you think they all "really want it" when they start campaigning for the head office up there in DC?

That's so tired, the whole "she'll do anything to get to be President". Ah, so would McCain. So would Obama. So would anyone who has run a serious campaign this past year and a half.

You think that maybe, just possibly, she stayed with her philandering husband because she did see something good in her marriage that she wanted to save? I mean, get over yourself, isn't that a possibility? I'm assuming that you're a republican, and republicans are ALL about family values. She and Bill have showed the actual true meaning of family values if you ask me. They went through a severe rough patch, one that given the nature of their exposure to the public limelight made it even harder I would assume, and they came out the far end of it a-OK, and STILL married.

Ah, yes... start a debate with an insult. So typical of wingnuts of both the Left and Right.

But since you insist... anyone who cannot see that the "hunger for power" -- the willingness to do or say anything or pay any cost to win -- by both Bill and Hillary is far greater than for most self-serving politicians is either blind or stupid.

As for "saving her marriage," any number of politicans have had to face that decision -- most withdraw or minimize their public life to do so. Not Hill & Bill... they instead attack anyone who has the temerity to treat their adult daughter like a grown-up political operative by daring to ask about Bill's "issues." They have the ultimate marriage of convenience.

I don't particularly like Obama or McCain, but you can count me among those who make up that large "strong negative opinion" group about Hillary Clinton ... and would absolutely vote AGAINST her.

No, I'm not a Republican, nor am I Democrat ... I'm a realist looking for the best future for America among a group of. once again, mediocre candidates. And I think "family values" are something to keep within the family -- not the government.

Ken Rudin is a jokester - has been for years. Anyone who ever hears him on NPR's Talk of The Nation knows that he is always looking for a laugh. Does comparing Hillary Clinton to Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction make for an accurate analogy? Depends on who you talk to. But one thing is for sure, there was no malice or sexism involved in Rudin's point. Also, while I happen to be a fan of Mr. Rudin, the analogy is not his. Andrew Sullivan and Monica Crowley have BOTH made the analogy in the past. Rudin is one of the top minds in campaign and political journalism but on occasion he tends to let his desire for a good joke interfere with his duty to be impartial and forthright. That being said, I think Ken Rudin is one of the most talented commentators out there for his depth of knowledge not only into the process but into the history of American electoral politics. Keith Olbermann should apologize to Mr. Rudin.

Well, that was downright gentlemanly for Olbermann to finally draw the line at the Hillary bashing.  I guess he realizes she may be the Democratic candidate, and if he crushes her, he may have to deal with a McCain presidency.  Rudin would have done better to compare Sen. Clinton to Rocky Balboa, which would have extended the metaphor of Holmes"s comment that Obama has  not yet been able to "to knock her out of this thing."
