Quinn to artist who submitted pro-impeachment Christmas ornament to White House: "Shut up, bitch"

December 04, 2008 12:14 pm ET

In a discussion of Deborah Lawrence, an artist who submitted an ornament for the White House Christmas tree expressing support for a congressional resolution to impeach President Bush, Rose Tennent read a quote from Lawrence, who said of the attention surrounding her ornament: "It took on a life of its own, obviously. In a way, I'm speechless." Tennent responded: "Good, stay that way. Don't talk," to which co-host Jim Quinn added, "That's right, don't talk. Shut up, bitch."

On the December 3 broadcast of The War Room, co-host Rose Tennent read from an article about Deborah Lawrence, an artist who submitted an ornament for the White House Christmas tree celebrating, among other things, Rep. Jim McDermott's (D-WA) support for a resolution to impeach President Bush. Tennent read a quote from the article in which Lawrence said of the attention surrounding her ornament: "It took on a life of its own, obviously. In a way, I'm speechless." Tennent responded: "Good, stay that way. Don't talk," to which co-host Jim Quinn added, "That's right, don't talk. Shut up, bitch."

According to The Washington Post, first lady Laura Bush "asked members of Congress to pick local painters" to decorate ornaments for the White House Christmas tree. McDermott "contacted a local arts organization, which asked Lawrence, a collage artist, to create the local entry."

Media Matters for America has documented that Quinn previously introduced a segment on Sen. Hillary Clinton by playing Elton John's "The Bitch is Back." Additionally, on October 7, Quinn asserted that Rep. Nancy Pelosi, whom he referred to as "the Queen Bee," "hated" Clinton "because she didn't want Hillary to be the most important woman in Washington," adding, "I'm sorry, but it seems to be the nature -- I shouldn't say the nature of all women -- but it seems to be a trait that flows through, for whatever reasons, the gender, if you will." Quinn has also stated that to feminists, even "a childless feminist who looks like a Bulgarian weightlifter in drag" can be a "real woman," and has repeatedly referred to the National Organization for Women as "the national organization for whores."

Talkers Magazine lists Quinn & Rose among its "Heavy Hundred," which it describes as the "100 most important radio talk show hosts in America." According to the show's website, it airs on 18 radio stations and XM Satellite Radio.

From the December 3 broadcast of Clear Channel's The War Room with Quinn & Rose:

QUINN: She needs something --

TENNENT: She sounds frightening.

QUINN: -- to become gainfully employed somewhere doing something for her fellow man besides this.

TENNENT: Argh. Yup, that's right. So, anyway, so she thought that she was making a very brave statement -- turns out that the White House has decided that, "You know what, don't think that's appropriate, we're not gonna hang it on the Christmas tree." So, but you know what? They have a luncheon -- I didn't know this -- for all of the artists, then -- a Christmas luncheon. Guess what? She jumped on the plane and flew to D.C. -- D.C. to go to the luncheon.

QUINN: Oh yeah --.

TENNENT: Yeah, she's there.

QUINN: She's there for the free meal.

TENNENT: Can you believe it?

QUINN: She's probably homeless and lives out of a shopping cart.

TENNENT: I just think that's a shame -- that's a shame.

QUINN: Well, you know --

TENNENT: Well, she said -- oh, she said, "An artist doesn't always get this kind of attention." This is the artist speaking.

QUINN: Yeah, 'cause they're hardly ever that stupid.

TENNENT: Plus, like, you're weird. Like, now I'm starting to think that there's something really wrong with you. That's the attention you're getting right now, sweetie. She said, "It took on a life of its own, obviously. In a way, I'm speechless." Good, stay that way. Don't talk.

QUINN: That's right, don't talk. Shut up, bitch.

TENNENT: She said, "It's disappointing that I won't get to see it on the tree." And did you think you would?

QUINN: Yeah, you know, I'll tell you what. There's -- there's always Photoshop. You know, you could take a picture of it and --

TENNENT: She's an artist. She can figure all of that out, right?

QUIINN: Sure. Take a picture of the White House tree, put your little ball on it --

TENNENT: Yeah.

QUIINN: -- put it up on the morning of December 25th -- you know, the winter solstice celebration -- and I'm sure you'll have a great time with it.

You forgot, Winter Solstice is actually on the 21st of December. Isn't that little holiday called Christmas on the 25th? The man can't even get simple facts straight, although I'm sure what he was trying to do here is to portray this woman as some sort of anti Christian zealot simply because she thinks Bush should be impeached. Turns out though, she's not the only person who believes this.

36-45% of Americans (in 2007) believed Bush should be impeached.

Clinton, only 25% thought that he should be impeached in 1998. Funny, that's about the same approval rating Bush has now. So I guess we know who wanted the impeachment, only the hard core Republican base.

These 2 are pretty much nut jobs. I'm more than sure that they weren't telling people to "shut up bitch" when folks were talking about impeaching Clinton. Double standard of course. They do hit all of the high points. This woman is an artist, so she must be homeless (god knows you can't live a good life being an artist or anything like that). She's a bitch because she doesn't like President Bush. She should shut up because they don't agree with what she's saying, or the statement she was trying to make. Getting a free meal (you know, that whole freeloading welfare thing again no doubt). And so on and so forth. The one thing that I really picked up on this, was at the start, we can add this woman's Christmas ornament to the list of which things Quinn and Rose are scared of.

It's funny - they are scared of a Christmas tree bulb.

Oh the hilarity of it all!

My cat loves the Christmas tree ornaments.  She climbs the tree every year, tries to nestle in the boughs.  She plays with the ornaments, bats them about as if they were her toys.  My cat is even braver than these two!

I was one of a 1000 artists, nationwide, to make a xmas ornament for the White House xmas tree back in 1993. It was a laminated exotic wood candy cane. In retrospect, it should have been a lollipop. I don't know what the rules are now for tree ornaments in the big house but, I think what she did was right-on. She was making a statement and that is what this country is all about. I would have sent a brain sandwich. Pehaps this would improve bush's ability to think.

You're barking up the wrong tree.  mmfa frequently stretches its mission statement and just quotes people on its sh!t list regardless of whether the quote furthers conservative misinformation.  Once mmfa concludes that a media figure is conservative, it seems to believe that every comment by that individual is designed to further conservative ideology. . . .   Thus, in mmfa's view,  calling this self-aggrandizing 'artist' the B-word furthers conservative misinformation

God forbid if President Elect Obama gets in some sort of issue and a Conservative group rallys for his impeachment and a conservative nut wants to hang an impeachment ornament on the White house christmas tree in 2011. Then Keith Olbermann or some partisan jerk on the left says to shut up "B" to the conservative. Would MMFA have an issue with that ? No.  It has nothing to do with conservative misinformation , it has to do with this low life person and MMFA and hateful far left liberal groups trying to embarrass President Bush with 5 weeks left in office. These people are disgusting. Outright disgusting.

From what I have read about the ornament, it was commissioned to show things about home state.  Her representative had supported a move for impeachment (I believe it was some time ago - not with 5 weeks left) and she wished to recognize that with this - "America cannot regain its moral leadership in the world if America cannot hold its leaders accountable for their actions at home," the text reads. "Without accountability, a Democracy will fail.".  She also had lots of other things on there including a nod to the 1919 general strike in Seattle.

No, Casey, they're not even close to being the same.  A blowhard is easily recognized and defined by what he does, namely express him or herself in an hyperbolic manner.  Motivation is irrelevant.

A hater, on the other hand, must be self-identified as such, by either statements or actions which leave no other interpretation, because hatred is a motivation.  You are judging the artist to be a "hater" because... well I don't really know, because that goes to your motivation.  It doesn't seem logical to me, because there are a number of possible motivations for her actions that have nothing to do with hate.  She might have thought it was funny.  It might have been meant to praise her local politician.  She might have been trying to see if she could sneak someting rather outrageous past Laura.  Or, she might have been motivated by Patriotism, and a commitment to our Constitution and rule of law.  How do you know it wasn't any of the above?

        OB,

I could care less about the ornament or what it said. I rank it right down there with celebrity gossip. What a waste of space.

The coarsening of language in (un)civil discourse. It has been going down for quite some time now and not just here. Frankly, I think that is a barometer of our culture.  The vitriol, as you well know, seems to be in every other post on this webstie.

However the First Amendment protects it. In my opion vitriol lowers the level of conversation. To me it is synonymous with shouting.  It is boorish. Discussion boards should be places to discuss ideas and not places where people, emboldened by their anonymity, spew childlike insults.

Unfortunately we live in such a world. It is up to each of us to raise the level of communication.  It is far more interesting to discuss ideas surrounding events and personalities. The best discussions are when people of good will disagree. The rest is simply drivel.

I've hated this since the 70's, when Don Imus was this foul-mouthed nasty DJ, and Howard Stern was interviewing hookers on the radio and going on and on about bl*w jobs. I just about stopped listening to AM radio in New York.

Completely independent of politics, I am so sick of rrradio becoming a cesspool I can't stand it.

How have our public airwaves become a place where the host of a radio show can say 'shut up. bitch" about somebody?

Who on earth gave this stupid, arrogant vulgarian the license to spew filth on the airwaves? What does it say about our society that he's allowed to make a vicious personal attack on another person with impunity?

I don't care whether it's about Linsey lohan, Jose Canseco, or Rose Tennent. This is behavior I would deck someone for If i heard it in a restaurant or a bar--and yet it's OK on our airwaves.

Radio has simply become a cesspool. Right-wing talk is not the only source, but it's the biggest. I'm sick of what the medium has turned into, and I'm not alone.
