Savage: "[P]eople wonder why" JFK Jr. "died in a plane crash and then suddenly, enter from ... stage left, the carpetbagger Hillary Clinton"

December 17, 2008 1:06 pm ET

After asserting that John F. Kennedy Jr. "was supposed to run" for Senate before his death in a plane crash, Michael Savage stated: "And to this day, people wonder why he died in a plane crash, and then suddenly, enter from ... stage left, the carpetbagger Hillary Clinton, who moved to Chappaquiddick [sic], and next, you know, she's running for the presidency."

During the December 15 broadcast of The Savage Nation, host Michael Savage asserted that upon Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan's (D-NY) retirement from the U.S. Senate, "[t]he young Kennedy [John F. Kennedy Jr.] was supposed to run; if you remember, he died in a tragic plane crash." Moments later, Savage stated: "And to this day, people wonder why he died in a plane crash, and then suddenly, enter from the -- from stage left, the carpetbagger [Sen.] Hillary Clinton, who moved to Chappaquiddick [sic: Chappaqua], and next, you know, she's running for the presidency. That's a whole story that only a novelist could write. I can't write it."

Savage made the comments while discussing reports that Caroline Kennedy has expressed interest in filling Clinton's Senate seat, should Clinton be confirmed as secretary of state.

As Media Matters for America has noted, on the January 31 broadcast of The Savage Nation, Savage asserted, "Look, [then-Sen. Barack] Obama's not getting the nomination. If he does, I wouldn't -- well, let me just stop right there. Think John F. Kennedy Jr. and the Hyannis -- and the airplane."

In July 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, and sister-in-law died in a plane crash en route to Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, for a wedding.

Talk Radio Network, which syndicates Savage's show, claims that Savage is heard on more than 350 radio stations. The Savage Nation reaches at least 8.25 million listeners each week, according to Talkers Magazine, making it one of the most listened-to talk radio shows in the nation, behind only The Rush Limbaugh Show and The Sean Hannity Show.

From the December 15 broadcast of Talk Radio Network's The Savage Nation:

CALLER: Hey, I just wanted to -- to say I think it's a bit unusual that Caroline Kennedy is being brought up as a white woman to replace a white woman's seat, similar to Jesse Jackson Jr. being brought up to replace a black man's seat.

SAVAGE: Oh, I see. It's now done by ethnic and gender breakdown.

CALLER: That's what I'm asking. Are we no longer looking at potentially the best candidates or --

SAVAGE: No, no, no. We're looking at affirmative action candidates. They have to fill certain roles. I guess you're right. I guess that's a seat filled by the carpetbagger Hillary Clinton to begin with. You know that liberal seat was originally held by a white liberal senator named Patrick Moynihan. You know that?

CALLER: I did not know that. I --

SAVAGE: Yeah, see, that seat was classically the liberal senator from New York, and it was Patrick Moynihan, who was, by the way, a very balanced liberal. He was not one of these extreme left-wing whack jobs. He was extremely reasonable, Moynihan. The young Kennedy was supposed to run; if you remember, he died in a tragic plane crash. Do you remember that one?

CALLER: JFK Jr., absolutely.

SAVAGE: Thank you. And to this day, people wonder why he died in a plane crash, and then suddenly, enter from the -- from stage left, the carpetbagger Hillary Clinton, who moved to Chappaquiddick (sic: Chappaqua), and next you know, she's running for the presidency. That's a whole story that only a novelist could write. I can't write it. But now, you see, she's suddenly secretary of state and now they want to fill it with a shoo-in. Why shouldn't it go to a Puerto Rican or a black person rather than Caroline Kennedy? Huh?

Taken by itself, it sounds like he's talking about Hillary replacing JFK jr, not about how he died.  It sounds like his point is that she's an "affirmative action" candidate, stepping in to replace another one.  That's what people are wondering about.  It does tie into what he said before, but if I had seen this all by itself I wouldn't take it as any sort of suggestion that there was any foul play involved with the plane crash.

It is kinda incoherent. At first it sounds like Weiner hangs around people who don't understand why plummeting to the ground in a plane is lethal. But it's apparent that they're just mystified at Hillary Clinton, who they all think is the most ambitious and calculating woman on Earth, ran for office.

"And to this day, people wonder..."

Some people. Some wonder why they can't catch their shadow, or how to parallel park. Some people are in a constant state of wonder.

And to this day, people wonder why he died in a plane crash....

He may have been a nice man but he was a very poor pilot.  His mistake was so stupid and embarrasing that all of aviation cringed when it happened.  Savage hints there was some mystery about the accident. There was absolutely no mystery about the accident.  John Jr. should have stuck to flying ultralights. They crash slower and kill fewer people.

Golly, think about it... First, JFK dies and then Bill Clinton runs for President. Then JFK, Jr. dies and Hillary Clinton runs for President...but has to settle for Secretary of State. Boy, Caroline Kennedy better keep her eye on that Chelsea Clinton... Creepy, huh?  Those damn Clintons...  ;>)

The stupidity and paranoia from him and his caller are mind numbing. I mean beyond the whole "Bill and Hillary kill anyone in their way" BS, we get the whole "affirmative action candidate" junk. Jesse Jackson Jr did not get the position. There were at least 5 candidates in serious consideration for the seat, and as far as I can tell not all of them were black men. Also has there been any other candidates for the NY seat? I am going to bet they are not all while women. Poor poor white men, they never catch a break. Idiots.

I am a born and raised Minnesotan, and I will always remember the day Wellstone died. I know diehard republicans who mourned his death as well (but they were Minnesotans too and we are an independant folk--Jesse Ventura, anyone?) I hate that he died, I hate that the US had to be subjected to Norm Coleman, but I don't want Paul Wellstone's memory to be forgotten in the midst of conspiracy theories. I sent him a letter as a 13 year old student (the only time I have sent a letter to a politician) and he was the first hero I had. I cried the day he died. Whether there was more to his death or not, I would rather people lived out his ideals rather than debate conspiracies of his death.

At first glance, this is incoherent, nonsense rambling.  But then you realize that Savage just had to throw any rumor he could about the Clintons and the Kennedys into one statement.

"affirmative action candidates" - Just like Hillary Clinton, who was only elected because her husband cheated on her, Caroline Kennedy is ONLY looked at because she's a woman.  (Incidentally, no one else has said it has anything to do with her gender.  Most look at her last name)

"people wonder why he died in a plane crash, and then suddenly, enter from the -- from stage left, the carpetbagger Hillary Clinton" - twofer on this one - suspicious circumstances involving a death and the Kennedys, AND an insinuation that Hillary killed him to advance her political career - JUST like Vince Foster, and those state troopers in Arkansas her and her husband killed!

then she moved to "Chappaquiddick", which, while not true, will remind his listeners of that horrible Ted Kennedy, and again connect Clinton to shady death circumstances

not to mention that Moynihan was "liberal" but also "very reasonable" - hasn't Savage made it pretty obvious that someone can't be both?  Further, whoever said that Senate seat was reserved for a "classic liberal New Yorker"?  I grew up in New York, I never remember anyone saying, "oh no, we can't elect a moderate to that seat! that's the liberal Senate seat!"

Ah, I was just waiting for another some-what race related topic from this Savage (haha, get it...). After all he does fuel his White listeners with racial-hatred. I mean, if no one can see that they are just as delusional as him. Won't be long until we see on the news that one of his listeners killed a person of color/personal beliefs...

the blunt truth is, no one,  aside from the gov. of ny,  has any say at all regarding who will replace sen. clinton,  for the balance of her term.  he could just take a walk in mid-town, or the lower east side,  and pick anyone off the street to replace her,  should he have a mind to do so.

this is the first i've heard that JFK, jr. was planning on running for the senate,  unless i missed it completely. of course,  mr. savage provides no actual evidence for this assertion (gee, huge surprise there!),  and it just goes downhill from there.

the scary part is that the majority of his listeners,  being stupid and uninformed,  will believe it.
