Gloria Borger said on CNN last night that 30 House republicans were mildly considering voting for the Recovery package but House minority leaders got them to change their minds - and none of them voted for the legislation,
Point is, Republican leaders like Boehner and Cantor got the Republicans to vote 100% against the Recovery bill, NOT Rush Limbaugh. They don't need and MM has no proof that his input and wishes for Obama and Congress's legislation to fail had a major affect on the Republicans that voted against what those extremely conservative members see as a bloated $800 billion bill that has too little Bush-like tax cuts and too much spending - even if Phil Gingrey does kiss Rush's ass and let's the whole world know.
You guys at Media Matters do great work, but cut-and-pasted the Rush clip to make it look like he said he hoped Obama fails as president when he was simply speaking out against the House democratic-written bill by saying "I don't want this to work." The "I hope he fails" remark means Rush hopes Obama's attempt at pushing the Economic Recovery bill fails, not that he wishes Obama to fail as president. You guys should know better.
Hey Chucko, you want to explain why Rep. Gingrey smooched Limpy's ass so heavily after his 'back off' remark? Think that it didn't have anything to do with the dittohead army melting the Rep's phone lines with outrage over that remark by any stretch, would it?
Limpy not having any influence? Please... just pull your head out of your ass, all right? Limpy is the leader of the Republican party, period.
Since your head is apparently up your butt that you can't read straight, let me spell it out for you. 177 already deeply conservative Republican House members don't need to think about Rush when deciding whether or not to vote against a huge democratic spending bill! And there's no proof they did get marching orders from Rush, even if losers like Phil Gingrey consider him a leader of the conservative movement. (Saying so is a bit like saying/assuming the 244 House dems voting yes on the stimulus bill took marching orders from top liberal-leaning talk radio hosts like Rachel Maddow or talking heads like Keith Olbermann).
The House leadership was the deciding factor for those 177 Republican sheep, not Rush Limbaugh. From the AP 1/27/08: "[A]ccording to officials who were present at a GOP meeting, none of the Republicans in attendance spoke up in disagreement when urged to oppose the legislation by their leaders. Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, the party's leader, and Eric Cantor of Virginia, the second in command, said they wanted "100 percent" opposition to the measure, which they argue includes billions in wasteful spending, these officials said."
Again, unless you can prove Rush influenced Cantor and Boehner to get 100% opposition against the Recovery bill, you're wrong. None of the 177 said, "Gee Rush, I'm up in the air on this. What should we do, vote for the democrats' $800 billion spending bill or against?" They are already loyal partisans in that part of the House. And they proved it with their 100% opposition vote. Rush is probably thrilled but in no way is taking credit, nor should he.
Rush will always be against what he sees as liberal policies and hope they fail and then hope that Republican/free market principles get a chance again to solve our problems. That's his logic, folks, as delusional as it sounds given that the dems are in charge and that the stimulus bill the Republicans voted against had some Republican input and Reagan-like provisions (ie. the Earned Income Tax Credit). This is how Rush and his ilk think and will always think, no matter what the economic circumstances and truth of legislations are.
Rush is so delusional right now that he doesn't think the current economy is as bad as it was in 1982! So naturally he thinks that in a year or two, Obama's supposed liberal policies will fail - which is what he meant by saying "I hope he fails" - so badly that the midterm elections will punish congressional democrats enough to force Obama to govern to the center or right (like Clinton after 1994's midterms), meaning more Bush/Reagan-ish policies. Again, that's not logical thinking, it's just Rush Limbaugh logic. Deal with it (with logic and accuracy) and move on. Let him howl into the wind all he wants. Him and his delusional BS won't matter in the end.
I think we all have friends and family with differing views on every subject imaginable.
The trick is to be able to defend your views in discussions and to be respectful of their views and hopefully, they'll give you the same respect.
You'll be surprised. In fact you might even be able to influence them and bring them over to your side.
Actually, I envision a world where a mix of fiscal responsibility, pragmatic economical and liberal-leaning ideas help fix this economy. Will that happen? It's anybody's guess.
I wish Rush (and leading democrats, regarding fiscal responsibility) would realize center-left policies are the way to go but he never will, so he's free to say liberalism and too much government intervention will fail all he wants, since this is a free country. Most of the time Rush is indefensible, but this time, let's not cut his words off to say or imply he hopes Obama fails at his job entirely. All that does is give legitimacy to right-wing critics who believe MMFA is a spin machine. If you STILL don't believe Rush's "hope" about Obama was philosphically-oriented as opposed to personal, read Rush's flawed but still worth reading (so-called "bi-partisan") approach to getting out a recession here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123318906638926749.html
Right, Limbaugh wants Obama to fail for philosophical, not personal reasons. If Obama were to govern as a far right loon, the way we’ve been governed for the last several years with disastrous results, the way that voters have thoroughly rejected, Limbaugh wouldn’t have a problem.
That’s quite a distinction you’ve made there, Chucko.
Limbaugh asked this question back when Tom Daschle called him "a big entertainer":
If he's simply a "big entertainer," why is everyone in the media coming after only him and not the other "big entertainers?"
I seriously don't see Limbaugh as a "big entertainer" -- too many people take him too seriously for that.
MediaMatters should do video/audio clips of Rush carrying water for Bush and the GOP. Highlight some of the more ridiculous things he said about the wonders and glories of the Bush Tax Cuts. I remember one show when he was gushing about all the revenue the fabled Tax Cuts provided the Treasury: "They have so much money; they don't know what to do with it."
MediaMatters may want to consider having a special section devoted to highlighting the inaccuracies and inconsistencies Rush says, especially the free passes he gave Bush for eight years.
So this is what the Republican party has been reduced to...
Um... all you people that come in here that consider yourselves Republican or conservative...
I think it may be time for you guys and girls to come to terms with the obvious fact that your party has been taken over by a group of ideological zealots!
I wish you all luck on trying to fix the party... but it most definitly won't happen as long as Rush is left on this pedesta...
Unlike the Dim party that has long been run by ideologues and demagogues...
Will you wake up to that fact?
A hypothetical:
Chris Mattews (or insert your own cable news commentator) proclaims:
"I hope the President fails. I will never agree with his policy to go to war with Iraq. I know this President, I have watched him. His goal is to set up Republican rule for the next fifty years. He is doing so by appealing to our worst instincts: fear and revenge. By appealling to our worst, he will dismantle the freedoms all Americans have come to cherish, and that are revered throughout the world
Could you Imagine the fall out from that!
My apology to Chris Matthews, who has shown himself to be a true patriot.
