      As a Vet, I support mandatory service of able-bodied Americans.  Why wouldn't the so-called "I support the troops" radical right embrace such a policy?

        The reason right-wingers don't support such a policy is because righties would have to send their own kids into battle, instead of sending the poor and underprivileged, to fight and die for their rights.

              Me too for both being a vet and for universal mandatory service. I like the idea of people serving a two-year hitch between high school & college, but I also strongly favor a non-military option for ones' service.

              My one reservation about the non-military option is that one thing I especially liked about being in the service was working with people from all over the country. We should come up with some way to see to it that recruits don't just serve in their home regions, but move around the country.

              For a Northeast big-city guy (Me) to serve in the small Southern city of Pensacola, FL was a very worthwhile experience.
