Why do we even have a "National Day of Prayer"? To whom are we pandering? Who are we trying to impress? The "Godless" Soviets? Al Qaeda? Is it, as I suspect, just a sop to the Evangelical nutbags who have such a stranglehold on so many of our politicians?

Are people of faith so weak in their commitment that they need a Government crutch to bolster their beliefs?

Short answer? Yes. They also need to see it on their money so when they grudgingly fork over a buck for a bag of cheeto's they can see it and remind themselves that God wills it.

I agree, the "National Day of Prayer" is just beyond stupid. I got to listen to callers to CSPAN complain about Obama and the "Democrat Party" seeking to "push their secular agenda down our throats..." for Chrissakes, the agenda of our government should be secular by DEFINITION!!

I wish Obama would have just said "for the religious, every day is the National Day of Prayer. I encourage all that believe in the power of prayer to pray regularly. I further encourage all those who believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ to pray as he instructed- in private, seeking no praise or attention for doing so."

People like Hannity, who worship money and attention while pretending to be dutiful Christians, make me sick.

I totally agree. It could safely be said that the Christian Majority has been pushing its religious agenda down the throats of the rest of us for a very long time. They got away with it for so long that they considered it an entitlement. Only in the past few decades have we started to bring the government back to a more neutral footing, where it belongs.

Well nerzog, I half agree with you. While the Christian Majority has indeed been pushing its religious agenda down the throats of the rest of us for a very long time. It is safe to say that there is nothing wrong with a National Day of Prayer. Just as I am sure that there is nothing wrong with any other day that isn't linked to our founding fathers, homeland celebrations or ethic backgrounds.

I mean if we get rid of the National Day of Prayer...than other non-holiday-days will have to go as well:

          Doctors Day
          Earth Day
          Administrative Professionals Day
          Nurses Day
          Mothers Day
          Friendship Day
          Labor Day
          Grandparents Day
          Citizenship Day
          National Children's Day
          National Boss Day
          Sweetest Day

          Fair is fair

Hey, it works for me. If a "holiday" doesn't get me a day off from work, what good is it?

I guess it's a girl thing. Let's be honest, now. How many men get all bent out of shape if you forget their Birthday or Father's day?

When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites! They love to stand up and pray in the houses of worship and on the street corners, so that everyone will see them. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. But when you pray, go to your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you. Matthew 6: 5-6

That's one of the many verses that doesn't appear in the Troglodyte Bible.

Another is that whole "Camel-through-the-eye-of-a-needle" thing. It's hard to reconcile that with a political philosophy based on protecting your money from the clutches of those annoying poor people.

Camel is a mistranslation of the Aramaic. The correct translation is "rope".
