I'm glad that Ed is seeing through this idea that it was some kind of misfired "joke." It wasn't-- all you have to do is read the piece in its entirety to see that the guy was being serious at this point-- and in fact, he was celebrating the troops, not putting them down at all.

Ann Coulter jokes. This guy was serious.

That was basically defamation of our American troops.

no it wasn't. he was just expressing his opinion on what the thousands of troops he has spoken to and supported feel about her. he has done more for troop support than pelosi or big ed have ever done.

That is what he was doing... so, where was the joke? He wasn't joking. He was serious about these guys and their feelings.

i'm not sure what you are saying. was he serious saying what the troops think. then thats just reporting what the troops said. i think he was serios in what the troops say but put in a humorous way on the classic elevator story. and ed didn't research this much..a dallas guy, he is irish and lives in dallas and respects this country more than most of the people born here.

Your going to take his word for what the troops are feeling then? I forgot whether it was 6 to 1 or 9 to 1 for military contributions in the last election against McCain.
Before you start lambasting us with ancient talking points, several posters here are veterans. Me to.
Considering the severe stress our military has been put under in the last eight years, and the horrible things that Iraq veterans have had happen to them, its really hard to consider conservatives as their friends. Now military contractors certainly consider them friendly. As long as that friendliness produces profits, no bid contracts, and protection. In return for campaign contributions and media access.

Oh baloney. Now you're saying that he's so d*mn patriotic that he advocates shooting politicians that he disagrees with. Pelosi and Reid passed legislation that improved the GI bill, among other things, for the troops.

Soldiers aren't at all unanimous in their feelings, there are plenty of Democrats in the military.

Had the comment been about a scenario where Rushbo, Newt, and Dick Cheny would have been killed tha CONservative talk show hosts would have been screaming for justice and calling for a lynching of the terrorist.

Talk of violence or the threats of violence for strongly held political views shoudl never be tolerated in a free and democratic society.

Schultz is being disingenuous in calling the apology lame. It was very direct and sincere and not qualified in any way that I saw. I wonder what he had to say about John Edwards shoot Cheney comments and olbermann highlighting it. Or Cindy Sheehans kill Bush comments from her book.

My comment was not hateful in any way, it was accurate and addressed speciic points of this thread. This guy was joking as was John Edwards, it was highlighted by Davis as did Olbermann in Edwards comments. Here was the man's apology "This passage was a metaphor meant to describe how American troops felt about our 43rd president," Feherty said in a statement. "In retrospect, it was inappropriate and unacceptable, and has clearly insulted Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid, and for that, I apologize. As for our troops, they know I will continue to do as much as I can for them both at home and abroad."

Oh bull. If it was 'sincere' as you say then the question is this: would he have issued his 'sincere' apology if Media Matters didn't exert any pressure on him?
