I guess it shows that even in a close circle like a family, nothing can be agreed upon.
But then again...why is this news?

          Ubermensch:

          Actually, this can fun.

Biden: pronounced with a long i; it is as we hear it. However,
with the short i, it's pronunced bIden, or bidden which means to summon, or invite.

Cheney, pronounced with a short e, sounds like a short i; which would sound like Chiney - "..like the hair of my chiny, chin, chin." We all know what happened to the three little pigs.

My personal favorite: Boehner. I want to go there, but in good taste, darn, I won't.

My mother-in-law is a Cheney--related to Dick Cheney many generations back. They pronounce the name Cheney as Lynne Cheney does, with a long "e".

I have a former associate whose first name is Marcia. In every situation, it has always been pronounced Marsha. Her grandkids call her Grammarsha.

However, when push came to shove, and she was trying to make me look deceitful and less close to her than we really were, after I called her Marsha, she told others that her name was Marcia, pronounced Mar-See-Ah.

Of course, shortly after that, her husband of 30 years got up and called her Marsha.

Cheney is 68 years, three months, and 23 days old today. He began his political career 40 years ago in 1969. After all these years, why is the pronunciation of his name an issue now? How was his name said when he was Ford's Chief of Staff (1974-1977)? The only reason this is an issue is because C. Matthews calls him Cheeney which rhymes with weeny, meany, teensy-weensy, and mussolini. If Cheney wants people to call him Cheeney, he should change the spelling to make it consistent with that sound.

The correct pronunciation of "Cheney" is "Dark Hell Beasts Sent to Destroy Mankind". So says Gandalf the White.
