I'm surprised that this pt was not made more frequently by Democrats. It is both true and a great counterargument. George Will obviously has not read Sotomayor's cases b/c her record does not bare out his simplifications.

Actually, this is an absolutely horrid counterargument. And truthfully, no counterargument is needed. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with what Sonia Sotomayor said if one knows the FULL context within which she made the statement. And that does NOT just include the full reading of the text, as some of the jerks in the media seem intent on focusing on, even her defenders, but what the entire speech was about, which is to say a discussion about the importance of diversity in the judiciary in regard SPECIFICALLY to racial and sexual discrimination cases.

THAT context is NOWHERE within the text of the speech, because it's not like she's going to say in the text of her speech, "Okay, we're talking here today about..." This has allowed all of the Right-Wing talking heads, and frankly most of the media, even those supposedly trying to defend her, not to mention all of the idiots on her side who are attempting to defend her, to ignore that part of the context.

Frankly, if you defend someone poorly, you're actually doing them harm, not good. Gwen Ifill didn't defend her properly, because instead of taking the issue head on, she's trying to dance around the subject. Instead, she should simply say, "Listen, it's common sense that in cases of racial and sexual discrimination, a wise minority woman is MORE OFTEN THAN NOT going to reach a better conclusion than a white male on those cases."

She could then go on to say, "This does not mean that a white male can't reach a conclusion on those cases that is just as good as a wise minority woman, but simply that if you had say a hundred instances of this happening, the white male might reach the right conclusion 80% of the time whereas the minority woman would probably reach it 95% of the time, because the minority woman's real life experiences would make it much easier for her to recognize when real racial and sexual discrimination has taken place, whereas the white male would really have to examine the case and the facts hard in order to discern the truth in the case."

THAT is how you defend Sonia Sotomayor's statement. HEAD ON!

I agree with you, but Ifill wasn't defending Sotomayor's speech. She was addressing Will's complaint that the Sotomayor "seems to have affirmed identity politics" - an argument that Ifill effectively demolished.

Exactly. I defy anyone to read her dissenting opinion on Pappas v. Giuliani and then tell me she's Judge Killwhitey.

Just watch Will's hand just when Ifill makes the point "shaped by his white maleness". He's outraged and furiousely starts tapping the table. LMAO.

He is the epitome of her point. Remember his dismissiveness over the misleading statements on global warning. The attitude was "how dare you question the great George Will?"

Good catch! That's the old "Shut up and let me speak, I'm superior!" table tap. I'll leave race out of my analysis and just point out that it's a maneuver almost always practiced by guy's with fake hair. Also, judging by his folded arms and bad posture, it's clear that he forgot to take care of some highly important on-line baking prior to taping.

Will was outraged again when, later in the day, he saw her wearing jeans.

      Gwen, bravo!

And being white, and having that impact your identity, is NO BIG DEAL. I'm white. It affects my identity. It's no big deal. Same for Sotomayor. Our life experiences, good, bad and indifferent affect how we end up. It's no different for a judge.

      Good job, Ifill (as usual!)

It's only "identity politics" when it's a minority appealing to other minorities. When John Edwards and Bill Clinton speak about their background as poor whites who grew up in the South, with stories on how they achieved success despite adversities, this was their way of speaking and identifying with that particular demographic. But you NEVER hear journalists or pundits labeling this "identity politics".

Another point that is hardly addressed: being a member of an "identity" group that's Non-White, Non-Heterosexual, Non-Christian or Non-Male, it helps you to recognize and question not only bias in the dominant white, heterosexual, male, christian culture and society. It can also help you to recognize and question your own personal biases.

It's not a guarantee it does, it merely helps. And it's not a guarantee that a white heterosexual christian male does not recognize this as well, it's just not that necessary for him and it might even be detrimental to his personal career.

well stated ms. Ifill...sotomayor's critics were so quick to jump on her comments and cherrypick sentences from her statement. any reasonable person knows sotomayor is not a racist.

You have to defend the white men in our society! If it was wrong it was wrong! White men carry their sense of arrogance because they have conquered many things! Slavery was an institution built out of savatry and other things yes, We are not living in that time anymore. Heal the wounds. Everytime Black people see the opportunity to join in on the White round up they come out with this 400 years ago bulls@#$. Okay, talk about how these same white men's efforts are fueling your opportunity and what they are giving back to Americans inspite of themselves-then let's address what are "we", as African Americans doing to live up to the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King and hold hands with our brothers. If not, Shut the F-up! We have lost control of our own but we are talking about "the white man!" I want to talk about the "black man" and why as society everybody is tired of his tired a@#! Why come we don't at least have 10 Obama's out of millions.

Black people DID YOU SEE AL SHARPTON BEHIND NEWT GINGRICH IN RECENT TELEVISION NEWS COVERAGE'S. yeah you saw him, but the problem with us is not the white man, it's the David Abernathy's, the Jessee Jackson's, the Al Sharpton's and so on. not the white man!!!! Let's Go!
