I'm really surprised by this. Perhaps Bob did not read an ample sample of the speech. Much to my surprise, Gregory did a really good job of putting the quote in context, producing an ample sample. Perhaps Bob was constrained by time?

And because Gregory did his job, we'll start hearing howls of "liberal bias" and that the MSM is trying to cover up her overt racism. Wait, it'll happen.

You are SURPRISED? Have you paid any attention at all to Schieffer over the years? The older he gets the more & more protective he gets of the DC villagers and the old white man control over the media and govt.

He has made comments ever since the election last year that show his frustration over the changing face of America to a more diverse society where people like him might now have to be held accountable.

I understand Schieffer to be a beltway bubble boy, not racist, but simply unaware of life outside the DC village. (Love that phrase, "DC villagers) Of course he considers himself to be a hard news reporter...sigh.....

After Bob allowed Cheney to ramble on without interruption and set up every single question to Cheney's favor who COULD be surprised.

Bob is far too old and his yearning for a delusion of HIS perception of the past shows that his mind is slipping.

      He needs to go.

Bob has always tilted right and now his ignorance and senility are starting to show through. IF he was honest and he isn't, he'd have read the ENTIRE speech and see what she actually said.

It's amazing how dumb our press is on this matter. What a bunch of morons.

The best way to understand Scheiffer is that he's a Texan. His framing and unease about Sotomayor is simple to understand once you place him in that context. He's basically uncomfortable with the "help" acting uppity. The same is true of the rest of the Villagers.

IMHO the Hispanic community is not going to forget how the Villager's have been reacting to her nomination and by extension their view of the Hispanic community. The constant xenophobia and scurrilous attacks from the Republican Party toward her nomination -- what did Lindsay Graham call it - "entertainment" is going to cause a reaction throughout the Hispanic community. One need only look at California -- the Republican Party by supporting xenophobic policies has basically been damaged beyond repair.

This vicious treatment of Sotomayor is only going to draw people within the Latino community together. Puerto Ricans have been citizens of this country since 1916 for crying out loud! New Mexican and Californian Hispanics have been citizens since 1848. Now the Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central American and Mexican community has a uniting crie de couer: "Let's work to bring non-xenophobic voices to the MSM." It is time that the chattering classes began to have people more comfortable with the America of today instead of lily-white fantasists like Schieffer.

BTW, Telemundo and the other Latino media outlets are following this very closely. It will play our much differently than what the Villagers could ever have imagined.

Well, while I'm not exactly proud of Texas, I do live in it (for now, I am moving out next year to a much more open environment) and I certainly do NOT think or believe anything that Texas is known for (racism, Bible-thumping, hunting, hating, and bigotry). There are pockets of Texas that are actually open-minded (Dallas, Austin, etc) and I would certainly belong to that group. While most of Texas is the way you see it, please understand that there are actual caring people in this state. We don't get represented very often because the rest of Texans usually try to shut us up. But please know that there are people here who do actually like diversity and are open to new ideas and such. People like me, we do NOT like Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, or any other crazy person on Faux news.

Isn't he golf buddies with a whole bunch of right wingers like Bush I? It is no surprise he is an ill-informed right wing operative.

I am disappointed, but not surprised by this assessment.
The media is absolutely complicit in the state of matters this country is experiencing. It started during President Clintons 2 terms with a heavy handed, gotch journalism (if that is what you call reporting) and continued 8 years ago with an intentional hands-off approach with Bush/Cheney and and company. Today, President Obama cannot not breath without the media assigning some of-the-wall journalist response. They don't thoroughly check business, politicians, government matters that are pertinent and important, but use valuable time on a witch hunt for the word "better."
Many of the complainers are so guilty of every single thing they are accusing her of, that to chastise her in such a mean-spirited manner is hypocrisy to the maximum degree.

Jon Kyle avoided answering the question whether Judge Sotomayor is a racist, but he can sit back and permit the "outside" conservatives to lambast her without knowing her.
Thanks to Senator Feinstein for speaking up.

This entire incident has peeled back the true mindset of many "leaders" in the GOP.

      Huh!?

Scheiffer just asked the question of how to interpret Sotomayor's rather jolting statement.

Senator Gregory didn't discuss the context of her statement at all. In fact, he reiterated the POSSIBILITY that her statement indicates a bias unworthy of a judge, ie. the possibility that she might not call "balls and strikes" impartially, but favor those with whom her experience leads her to "empathize."

Commendably, Gregory said he would keep the issue open in his mind until Sotomayor is questioned and given the chance to elaborate or explain.

Huh! This "jolting statement" was cherry picked by the right wing and taken out of a speech; then the media magnifies their idiocy by thinking that it means other than what she clearly was saying. (it's clear, if you read the speech)
It's just a bogus controversy. There's no action that she's taken that even hints of racial prejudice.
