Didn't this guy also say blacks have had it better in America than any other country? Am I then to take the above statement to mean he thinks Sotomayor is giving those uppity whites a free ride?

I think he said something along the lines that black people had it better in American under slavery than they did in their homelands because they were less "civilized" in Africa and other places they were taken from and pressed into slavery.

I'm paraphrasing, but it was something like that. He's not the only crazy person to say such things.

He really makes Sotomayor's point about a white male judge!!This bigot only sees "reverse racism" and doesn't have clue what it was like to grow up in the south as a black American!!!This lame comparison shows he is out of touch.I heard him once say what a great and funny show Amos and Andy was ..he couldn't understand how it offended anyone!!!!!He does not need to comment on any social issues..he is totally out of touch!!!!

When she has her judgment overturned, and the Supreme Court agrees that she discriminated against these men, what do you call it? Really how many times does she have to be overturned? Do you really want a judge on the bench that the Supreme Court several times said her decisions are wrong? I think you can find someone that can not have cases overturned, sounds like to me she does not know the law that well.

Of the 2 cases of Antonin Scalia's reviewed by SCOTUS, both were overturned. Please explain to me then, Scalia's knowledge of the law.

That she would disagree with the four wingnuts + Kennedy would be the clearest sign yet that she's not only qualified, but desperately NEEDED on the SCOTUS. Too bad she's not replacing Scalia. Moron.

Any judge who DOESN'T get overturned fairly often by this rogue Supreme Court is suspect. If she agreed with most of the four justices who actually try to apply equal justice under the law, and who dissented in Bush v. Gore, then she might become an excellent justice herself.

My goodness you are a dense one. HER COURT not just her, was reversed three times in about 500 decisions and that is somehow a high percentage? Have you lost your mind? You dont really care if what you say makes sense do you?

All judged who have cases in front of the high court have had their cases overturned. This is not some new revelation. It's like when you guys figured out Obama was using *GASP!* a teleprompter.

Just like the south? Give me a break you past-due gasbag.

A black man or woman in the south faced a hell of a lot more than a rejection letter if they tried to apply for a 'white' job or attend a white only college.

      There is no comparison.

And please don't try and convince me that whites are hard done by even today. That's just not a reality.

Oh lord. Uncle Pat is race-bating...yet again! What's so ironic about Uncle Pat's outrage is that it was his former boss Richard Nixon who introduced Affirmative Action with the Philadelphia Plan. (Despite what others may think, Nixon was the last liberal president who not only supported many The Great Society programs, but extended and strengthened a lot of anti-poverty initiatives while he was in office.) So his moaning and groaning about "reverse-racism" (i.e. Affirmative Action) stems directly back to his former boss.

I think it's time for Uncle Pat to call it a day. Besides, once he retires he can tend to collecting his cherished Confederate and Third Reich memorabilia, while reminiscing of the good ole days where those coloreds and women knew their place!

What's up, Solon! Good to see you (you were definitely missed when you went on your hiatus!)

Yes, it shocked me at first when I heard Chomsky said that, too, but after reading many good books about Nixon (including Chomsky's take), judging his domestic policies, there was a huge difference between him and a Ronald Reagan. He was a moderate in the mold of Pres. Ike. Now, he may ran as a fire-breathing, right wing populist, introducing the Southern Strategy where other Republicans could win elections for decades to come, but after he won as president, could've easily overturned many of the progressive domestic policies of LBJ, but he didn't. Like Mags says he'd probably be a democrat today if he was alive.

Sotomayor's defense of a white bigot in the NYPD is similar to what was done in the South, but as usual, Pat has everything completely backwards.

      Via Sullivan:

      A reader writes:
It took about, oh, under one minute to do a Google search and come up with Judge Sotomayor's dissent in Pappas v. Giuliani, 290 F.3d 143.

The plaintiff, Pappas, was fired by the NYPD when it was discovered that Pappas had regularly (but anonymously and on his own private time) distributed racist and anti-semitic pamphlets of the David Duke variety. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals voted to affirm the NYPD's actions but Justice Sotomayor dissented on the grounds that Pappas's first amendment rights were not vitiated merely because he had unpopular views.

There are two critical points to take from this. The first, and most important point to consider, is that here we have a judge, accused of entho-centric racism, dissenting on behalf of a white male police officer accused of distributing racist pamphlets. This is outside the Limbaugh/Rove/Hannity nattering nabob narrative and so has to be ignored by much of the MSM.

The second point is the fact that despite the fact that his material is so readily available at the click of a Google button, so many people rely on ideologues to filter the information they take in and who treat that information as fact (which it is not) rather than advocacy (which it is). It is a sad pathetic sign of the times.

Excellent, excellent, excellent post! And there's a third point: FINALLY we have a judge who understands what the 1st ammendment is really all about!!!

      I have a compromise suggestion:

If Judge Sotomayor is confirmed as a Justice on the SCOTUS, then as a safeguard, we will introduce an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, that affirms the right of 'white males' to vote.

Who knows what might happen under such an enfranchisement as that... maybe even a 'white male' might be President some day... who knows.

Although what Pat Buchanan says is disgusting, sickening, and complete lunacy, and frankly he shouldn't ever have a platform for his tripe, we should be thanking our lucky stars he gets so much free publicity to spout his garbage. Despite his statement that the Repuglican Party will only benefit from all of this, they are going to go down hard over this.

Every single day they continue these attacks they are losing thousands upon thousands upon thousands of minority (especially Hispanic) votes. I fully believe that in the 2010 elections Repuglicans across the board are going to see minority support for their election dry up to the point they'll be lucky to have ANY of their candidates draw 5% of the minority vote. This will guarantee their defeat in numerous races. By 2020 the Repuglican Party will go the way of the Whig Party and enter the trash heap of history.

Although I'm an agnostic, I say Hallelujah to this...lol
