That's right---it's Obama's fault. Only a few short months ago he inherited a vibrant and thriving economy and look at what he'd done to it. Oh sure, he claims he's trying his best to make things better, but he's the one who ruined the economy in the first place!

Thanks for your insightful analysis. Now you're free to get back to what you do best... scamming old people out of their money in the name of God.

He's on TV more, but he's in good company theologically: James Dobson, Bill Donohue, Jack Chick, Fred Phelps, Ted Haggard, John Hagee, Rod Parsely...

I don't think Ted Haggard thinks much about his former peers since they tried to cure him of his sex addiction with men. These fellow preachers have abandoned Haggard because he was a sinner unlike them. Poor Ted had to go out and get a real job instead of fleecing the gullible.

Slight correction - he was a sinner who got CAUGHT. I saw the documentary on his post-pulpit life. He became a sympathetic person to me because despite being "corrected" of his sinning lifestyle the chuch bigwigs wouldn't accept him back into the fold to make a living. His family had to live in motels and stranger's homes and he was reduced to selling insurance door-to-door.

I saw the movie. You are correct in that he got caught. I agree that he is a sympathetic person. He should be out and publicly speaking about the hypocrisy of these ministers. His words can do more damage to them than anything we can say.

Thomas Jefferson's words only count among wingnuts when they're vague quotes about the role of government that they can interpret to say it's not fair they have to pay income taxes.

The end is nigh-so sayeth Pat Robertson the Kentucky Fried Evangelist. Unfortunately, separation of church and state only goes one way because the Constitution does not prohibit religious leaders from getting involved in politics. The IRS should be all over some of these holy rollers who go beyond religion. If these preachers get involved in politics then they should be forced to register like any other political group and lose their charitable status.

Personally? I don;t understadn why the personal income of the clergy isn't taxed. CHURCHES I can understand: they should be treated just like any other charity or non-profit organization. But even in the cases of charities, the salaries of the people that RUN THEM,a dn anyone paid to DO THE ACTUAL WORK, is taxed as regular income. Why do these charlatans get a free ride? It's long past time to end THAT nonsense.

Actually, I think churches should pay property taxes. Where I live, there are monstrous churches sitting on prime real estate that would easily sell for a million dollars an acre. Several of the bigger ones are sitting on 20 or 30 acre lots.

At some point, the IRS can declare that your personal income is EXCESSIVE to be justified as 'doing god's work.' Plus there was a FRAUD element with Bakker, as I recall. But no, I'm pretty sure that most income made in religious & clerical service in not taxed.

I am less concerned with taxing the clergy's income because the major issue is when a church uses its tax shielded donations to get involved in the political arena. If a religious organization becomes involved in politics they should be treated like other organizations that are taxed on their income, property, etc., and come under the rules that govern lobbyists. Also, such rules would exclude people from taking tax deductions for their contributions to the politico-religious body.

Agreed 100%. The minute the church endorses a CANDIDTE or PARTY or for that matter advocates on POLICY (which goes beyond tellig their own flock what they think is right and wrong) they are a lobby group, and should be treated as such.
