I know this is a magnitude different comparison, but I like to think of the US Postal service. It's a massive organization that allows anyone in this country to send a letter to any city in the country for $0.44.

Does this efficient, low cost solution preclude the private sector from competing?

I think Fedex and UPS is doing okay.

You use my argument! The PO is a great value. And the competition is doing just fine. In fact competition has forced the PO to be competitive itself -- to expand services and innovate. We require that our government provide education, police & fire protection, roads, etc. There is no good reason not to demand that all citizens have access to healthcare. The people want it. When will the Repugs and those rogue Dems wake up?
