Mika, you don't seem to understand. According to the RightWing, this is what Democrats do. We are cheaters, unAmerican, unpatriotic and simply put, scum-sucking vermin.
I believe the main subject here should not be this guys' affair but his hypocrisy. Another "paragon of virtue" in the Republican party damning others for what he is doing, ala, Newt Gingrich, Sen. Ensign.
There have been a balance of cheaters in our Congress/White House and some come through it while others suffer the consequenses.

        Of course you're absolutely correct.

If one guy spouts off about family values and moral virtue then cheats on his wife, that's entirely different from a guy who doesn't proselytize about morality then cheats on his wife.

Only an idiot would fail to see there's a difference.

        Ipso facto, Mika's an idiot.

Clinton impeached for getting head from an intern. Sanford sympathized with because "he seems in love". No double standard there. How about John Edwards, Gary Hart, and Kwame Kilpatrick. Were they let off the hook like, Vitter, Gingrich and Ensign? Mika, don't just go along to get along. Use your dran brain.

Now just how predictable is this, that these media hacks should run like crazy with this fascinating story of this lame weak pathetic excuse of a man who chases after a woman the length of the western hemisphere, and who's wife couldn't really care less because if anybody knows what a worthless pathetic excuse of man he is, then it's her...

It's all so fascinating, especially the rambling incoherent speech the guy makes when he comes back from being AWOL... and if I'm a South Carolinian, and I heard that speech, I'd have said never mind that the worthless guy cheats on his wife, he's mentally defective!

He's babbling mindlessly and incoherently in public, and he's our Governor!

Quick, let's get this guy away from South Carolina's nuclear arsenal!

It's all so fascinating... thank goodness joe and mika have something to distract from the white hot issue of Public Health Insurance, especially after Chris Matthews embarrassed them and cleaned their clocks on that matter, just yesterday.

Neon, I hadn't even realized that, and you're right, it does add a stranger twist to the whole thing (I can just imagine the woman maybe playing the "they mean more to you than I do" card, and goading the worthless worm of a husband and father, by noting he'd rather be with his children on Father's Day... "No babe, not true! It's you, you're the one who makes my life worth living... you're my 'Viagra'! I'm on a plane right now, to Buenos Aires... you'll see!").

But I want to emphasize again what struck me most, and still does.

The worthless worm crawls home from Argentina, and crawls home from the Argentine bosom of his old man's sucking life, and he conducts a senseless and incoherent press conference, something that resembled more the drunken idiotic confessions of a crack addict on Oprah, than it did the explanation or excuses of the Governor of a State...

All of it right there in the South Carolina State Capital (I believe), right there under the Rotunda!

My LORD I thought, I can tolerate and even overlook cheating husbands and lame fathers, but the Governor of a U.S. State is a complete babbling incoherent moron?

          Save us LORD!

          We deserve better...

I'd have immediately put that worthless senseless idiot under house guard, and made sure his lame and foolish mind can't do any more damage to anybody, not the People of South Carolina (he's their Governor!) or his family and children...

I don't really concern myself with the bedroom bathroom or kitchen habits of others (unless it's my bed or bath or kitchen), but I hate idiots, especially when they're in positions of authority over us, like the worthless Governor is... or is over the People of South Carolina.

          Save us.

If you mean by double standard republicans demand the immediate dismissal of any democrat who is revealed while any republican who is revealed are immediately embraced and forgiven (vitter, ensign, craig) and even are considered material to run for president (gingrich) then yes, there is a double standard. It's better known as hypocracy, and the right embraces it every day.

Mika's right. There IS a double standard.

There's the standard of the conservatives, who think that peoples bedrooms should be monitored, homosexuality is an abomination to God, marital aids should be illegal, gay weddings are a threat to traditional marriage...

And there's the standard of the liberals, who think the government should stay out of other peoples' bedrooms.

I hope Mark Sanford is made to resign and if he used taxpayer dollars for his trip he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I'm glad his wife did not stand with him, finally a woman with some pride. Anyone who cheats on their spouse is a lowlife in my opinion. If you do not want to be with your spouse, seperate. I feel this way because a close friend of mine died from Aids because her husband cheated on her with a man 20 years ago and they both contracted this hideous disease.
I work in a man's field and it is amazing how many men cheat when we are at conventions, the majority of them don't even consider paying a prostitute cheating. To some character is still king. Someone who cheats is of very poor character.

I read Mrs. Sanfords statement, and initially I likewise admired her for standing up for herself. Until I got to this paragraph:
"I believe enduring love is primarily a commitment and an act of will, and for a marriage to be successful, that commitment must be reciprocal. I believe Mark has earned a chance to resurrect our marriage."

I'm not sure how he "earned" a chance to resurrect their marriage, unless she's basing that merit on establishing for her a lifestyle of financial and social status that she's just not willing to give up.

WHOA. You are completely wrong about this. The money in that marriage comes from Jenney Sanford, who is a multi-millionaire heiress to the Skil Tools fortune. (Google it if you don't believe me.)

By "earning a chance," I think she means that the twenty years they spent together, and his DNA running in the blood of her four sons, buy him the chance to do the right thing.

But she certainly has no financial need for him at all; he needs her. As to social status, what has he got to offer? He's in disgrace, should be impeached if he doesn't resign, and could possibly face criminal prosecution if he used state funds to facilitate his travel to his mistress. He certainly is never going to be able to offer her anything but public embarrassment. Her social status would improve if she dumped him.

Ensign and Sanborn both voted to for Bill Clinton's impeachment. They both campaign on family values.

Most everyone doesn't care about Republicans cheating on their wives. We only care because they are the ones who rail on Democrats who cheat and claim to be "holier than thou"

It's the hypocrisy that drives everyone nuts. It's not a double standard it's a single standard. Don't claim to be the leader of family values and then have an affair. Just admit that we are human and flawed and "Family Values" is a politcal myth used to prop up republicans as being better than their rivals.

Oh, looky here, why it's a law on the books in South Carolina!

Any man or woman who shall be guilty of the crime of adultery or fornication shall be liable to indictment and, on conviction, shall be severally punished by a fine of not less than one hundred dollars nor more than five hundred dollars or imprisonment for not less than six months nor more than one year or by both fine and imprisonment, at the discretion of the court. . . . “Adultery” is the living together and carnal intercourse with each other or habitual carnal intercourse with each other without living together of a man and woman when either is lawfully married to some other person.

Mika, there is no better example of the double standard than Joe Scarborough. While we were all hearing endless stories about Chandra Levy and Gary Condit (of course, they actually charged someone else for her murder), Joe had his own scandal going on with a dead staffer named Lori Klausutis. The whole Klausutis case stinks, with things like lies coming out of the Republican-connected medical examiner. Google Lori Klausutis if you haven't heard about the case yet.

The Condit-Levy story was reported endlessly, and Condit's career was permanently destroyed (Baskin Robbins even revoked two franchises he owned), while Joe's scandal was barely mentioned. Joe is probably more influential than he's ever been.

Joe also admitted an affair with his wife. He "survived" so well, he's now got the morning show on the supposedly liberal cable news station, and he's out selling his new book and even talking of running for office again.

Bill Clinton didn't parade family values around with a party that aligned itself with the socially conservative, religious right while attempting to pass legal policy that is influenced by these so-called family values. No one is debating or condemning the act of adultery here as if Sanford is somehow special. Tts a very common thing in America (yes, even among the self-righteous family values folks)and it isn't exactly big news; libs and conservatives alike partake in it. No, the reason us libs are jumping all over this is the hypocrisy of a man who abandoned his kids on Fathers Day during a time when he was supposed to be separated from his wife to "sort through his personal issues" to leave the country under the guise of a SOLO hiking trip in order to continue on with his extra marital relations involving some bimbo he's been having an affair with for well over a year. The hypocrisy of a man who condemned people like Bill Clinton and called for his resignation and also spoke out against gay marriage saying that he's taught his kids that marriage is between a man and a women only (and apparently, another women from South America). I don't judge others for what they do in their marriage, although I must admit that a man who is supposed to put his constituents first before his own needs will likely have trouble doing that when he can't provide the same loyalty this his own wife and kids. What I judge is someone who preaches and condemns one thing (and in a public forum no less) and then does it himself. I also judge someone who skips the country w/o telling even the deputy Governor where he's going, especially when we come to find out that at least 3 of his excursions to Argentina were funded by the taxpayers of SC! He lied to the entire country and was caught red handed. The press conference wasn't some honorable and noble gesture to come clean, he was caught and forced back into that corner; he had no choice but to fess up. His wife had known for 5 mos and apparently, a local newspaper had known for longer as evident by all the naughty email exchanges they are finally releasing. And no he didn't look remorseful for anything else but getting caught. He's a politician who is used to standing up in front of thousands and lying his way through a speech and feigning concern and care. So Sanford is guilty of being the typical conservative hypocrite who touts family values and the sanctity of marriage while not actually practicing it at home, for failing to honor his marriage vows and providing the loyalty his four kids deserve by putting his own needs first and for skipping the country and out on his duties as an elected official without telling anyone where he was going... and in the next few days it may also be proven that his tax-payer funded trips to Argentina were also opportunities for him to have tax-payer funded adulterous trysts.

If Sanford is found to have misappropriated public funds for personal use, then the SC Atty General or legislature should take whatever actions are appropriate under state law to charge or impeach him.

There is a more important issue than this. Do these people take their oath and responsibilty serious or the cushion position? Were they ever stand up, and the Governor and his wife had already discussed this issue. He actually did approach the issue the way any one else would. His error was not waiting for a divorce, and a scorned lover exposed this in this light. I doubt that the Governor was that tactless. Who was looking for the Governor and why? No one, some angry person leaked the story this way.
