Thanks for being specific in your references... why don't you just say... the "I heard in the elevator..."
The major point that they are all missing is that the Cap and Trade program is designed to create incentive for producing energy alternatives and using clean fuel... what if, in 5, 10, 15 years a company comes out with an alternative energy that we can't even conceive of know, and it was developed because of the economic necessity created by Cap and Trade.
Right now, nobody is seriously investing in alternative energies because oil and coal are monetarily cheap and environmentally expensive, but until now, nobody has assigned a cost to the environment.
Here in the real world, though, the truth of the matter is that energy, especially anything petroleum based, is kept artificially cheap. Every gallon of gas would cost about $15-$20 if it were taxed to pay for the environmental effects, and the cost of putting down governments in foreign lands to maintain the supply were factored in. Honestly, $15/gallon gas would spur a great deal of creativity in finding better ways to fuel our transportation system, encouraging more electric cars among other things.
