Dan Rather was fired for going on air to early with news that didn't have facts, and Pat is allowed to make Racist vitriol remarks? Everyone should stop watching MSNBC until Pat gets fired

Well, once again, Pat Buchanan represents Republicans in their favorite tone. Totally unappreciative of the "slave labor" done free of charge by blacks. Particularly in early buildings put up in Washington DC. Pat is a through and through racist. This is not his first totally public racist remark nor will it be the last until his Catholic soul finally figures out the Church objects to racism and he finally accepts that ideal for himself. I shall not hold my breath though as I am sure his priest has already dealt with his obvious racism.

You know, I keep hearing about how Sotomayor is a racial choice, an affirmative action choice. Who would the conservatives rather have nominated for the Supreme Court? In other words, what other equally qualified candidate got passed over simply because of race? Anyone?

In spite of what the right likes to claim (although they ignore Sotomayor's vast experience on the bench in doing so) it's not that easy to quantify who is the most qualified judge. As to whether this was an "affirmative action" appointment I'd say yes, in a way it was. Obama set out to appoint a woman and a minority woman if possible. I have no problem with that. The current make up of the court is 7 white men, 1 white woman and 1 african american man. I think they could use a little diversity. But it's not affirmative action in the way that Cons usually decry it. It's not mandated by law. The employer (Obama in this case) gets to hire who he wants and doesn't have to answer to anybody about why. Isn't that what the right has always wanted?

The country was built by white people.... but on the foundation of Native American land(sometimes taken by force and/or deceit) and forced labor of African slaves. It is delusional to ignore the economic advantages created by this system which was in place for centuries!!!It should also be noted that we would certainly be hard pressed to do with out traffic lights, washing machines, elevators, shoe lasting machines, electric filaments, open heart surgery, separation of blood plasma, etc ,etc..all accomplishments of African Americans despite not even being allowed literacy for centuries in this country.Pat..ever hear of Elijah McCoy??His machine inventions were so reliable the phrase "real McCoy " was coined by whites who didn't know he was Black!!!!!The Buchanan ignorance is not surprising since these type records and facts were largely ignored in history books until recently..well after old Pat was in school. It IS surprising that he and others like him get to espouse such ignorance, bigotry, racism and sexism..everyday before a national audience.Progress...yes but way too little after all this time!

Actually at this time in our History there are reams of information about the contributions blacks made in the development of our country. Pat just chooses to continue his racist ideology and ignores it. Poor thing simply has to denigrate others in order to feel superior himself. And that, folks, is the true test of abject racism.

Funny how conservatives are always talking about a colorblind country where we are all "mericans" but are the first to bring up race. So we should be talking about the wise American lady from New York who went to Yale. We should be talking about the American firefighters in New Haven who tested better than other Americans. See, I'm learning.

        Speaking of "color blind conservatives"...

In a story that has become so common that it is almost passe, yet another conservative official has been busted sending racist e-mails. This time, the culprit is Atwater, CA Councilman Gary Frago, who sent at least half-a-dozen racist, anti-Obama e-mails to Atwater staff and community members:

Some compared Obama to O.J. Simpson while others suggested that "n[*****] rigs" should now be called "presidential solutions."

Perhaps the most overboard e-mail was sent on Jan. 15. It read: "Breaking News Playboy just offered Sarah Palin $1 million to pose nude in the January issue. Michelle Obama got the same offer from National Geographic."

Frago admitted sending the e-mails, but showed no regret. "If they"re from me, then I sent them," he said. "I have no disrespect for the president or anybody, they weren’t meant in any bad way or harm."

It never reached 90%, but it came close by census data. You can find the percentages on page 14. However, we should be aware that most hispanics were grouped with whites at that time, which helped bring the white percentage higher.

Oh and I suppose the economics of slavery had nothing to do with the United States becoming an industrial power in the 19th Century. Has Mr. Buchanan ever researched the central role of cotton and slave labor to the U.S. and world economies. I do an entire lecture in my history class over how when slavery ended in the U.S. it caused a worldwide economic downturn because of the importance of U.S. cotton which could not have been produced if it were not for slavery. Many of our former presidents made their fortunes connected to some type of slave trade or labor, so Mr. Buchanan needs to go back and do some research. This country was, by no means, mostly built by white people. I could go on and on, but I will spare the history lesson.

      No Pat,

The dynamic duo of depopulation, measles and smallpox, built this country. I mean, even with 90% of natives dying at first contact with Europeans, the early colonies barely survived their conflicts with them. How long do you gather Jamestown and Cape Cod would have lasted without germs on their side then?

Also, what do you think would've happened to the native Americans if they had decided to park a settlement in Cornwall? How do you think that would have gone over?

False. Ya know, Google ain't hard to use.

        <http://www.archives.gov/education/lessons/blacks-civil-war/>

179,000 blacks served in the Union Army, making up about 10% of it. That it wasn't a larger percentage is probably due to the fact that white people made it really hard for black people to join and fight.

And Martin Luther King Jr. wasn't white.

        Buchanan's argument was bunk.

The post doesn't claim whites were the only ones who fought to end slavery, etc -- it says they fought. It's you who is wrong to call his statement false.

Other than saying Soto is an affirmative action pick, I don't understand why everyone is all up in arms over what Buchanan said. He was asked why he thought 108/110 justices have been white and he said cause white people have been in charge while blacks were discriminated against. Is that not true?

The problem Drew, is that he did not say this as a way of pointing out discrimination as you try to spin it, but that he is saying whites DESERVE it run the country because they built it, which, of course, absurd and easily disproved (see the several other posts) most easily stated as - A country built FOR rich, white people BY the hard work of many poor dark and white skinned people.

Are you being intentionally ignorant for comedic purposes because your attempt at making a point was kinda silly?

No they were all stolen by white folks. Who took this country by force, gave the indians all kinds of diseases and ran them off their lands. How can you say this coutry belongs to them when they were not the original people here.

Ordinarily, zamfir273114, I would try to turn your grossly offensive statement into an opportunity for comedy. But this isn't funny. Your claim is either frighteningly ignorant, frighteningly bigoted, or both.

Non-whites weren't exactly twiddling their thumbs waiting for the U.S. government to actually practice what it preached in its founding documents about all men being created equal and endowed with inalienable rights. You never heard about slave rebellions? Does the name Frederick Douglass mean anything to you?

For you and Pat it's not enough that non-whites had to suffer slavery in the past; any trace of agency and self-determination on the parts of non-whites has to be erased from the historical record so that whites can take exclusive credit for -- entirely on their own -- coming to the conclusion that perhaps it might be nice not to treat other human beings as farm animals anymore.

Oh silly, ignorant zammmie. Blacks served in the revolutionary war too. In fact, due to manpower shortages many regiments were up to 50% black. The colonists even had a program where slave owners could have one of their slaves serve in their staid. There were also several [url=http://www.footnote.com/page/747_african_american_patriots_of_the/[/url]! No silly boy, contrary to your racist driven opinion, black soldiers fought alongside colonialists winning independance for our country.

guys, i think ya'll are being just a tad harsh on brother pat. you see, in his mind, no one else exists in the US but white folks. never have, never will. the rest are merely shadows, passing him by on a sunny day. in brother pat's reality, they are non-existent.

we'd all like to think brer pat is unique in this regard. sadly, no. he represents many others who also reside in bizarro land. hopefully, they are on the short end of the actuarial table, soon to leave this mortal plane.

ok, a boy can hope, can't he?

By built- I'm assuming he's talking about directing other people to build. By him saying that white men wrote the constitution doesn’t answer the question on why almost 100 percent of the Justices have been white men. He is trying really hard to justify institutionalized discrimination

I can't believe MSNBC continues to pay this guy. Rachel hadn't had him on since his post election anti-gay, anti-Obama written rant and I'd hoped she was done giving this clown a forum. Maybe the plan was to expose him as the bigoted white supremist he is thereby taking any credibility away. If that was the plan, it sure worked!

from Nixon archives letter from Buchanan
written right after Nixon announced affirmative action
      http://students.washington.edu/trevorg/pdfs/Nixon/Buchanan.pdf

"Thus, instead of sending orders out to all our agencies-- hire blacks and women--the order should go out hire ethnic Catholics preferable women, for visible posts. One example: Italian Americans, unlike blacks have never had a Supreme Court member--they are deeply concerned with their "criminal image"; they do not dislike the President. Give those fellows the "Jewish" seat, or the "Black" seat when it becomes available."

The whole 6 page letter is pretty amazing

As ugly as Buchanan was, it was an amazing sight to watch how rational and cool Rachel remained. She has grown to become the very best interviewer on television. A great roll model for how to argue with a hostile person and remain respectful.

This tirade was an amazing example of the myth of white male exceptionalism. Because white males have dominated such and such they are obviously superior to everyone else is Pat's argument. Pat neglects one teeny tiny detail: the system was CREATED by white males for the BENEFIT OF white males, so of course they, or should I say people like ME, are bound to wind up on top. White males have games the system to favor themselves. It's not right or wrong. It's an advantage of power and position.

AA was created to give those without a leg up a leg up. Pat just cannot fathom that AA is not discriminatory against whites but give the system the equilibrium that is otherwise missing. I also want to further my cred on this subject by adding this: I once worked for a black man who was an EOE hire, and he was rampantly racist against whites. Not an opinion. Observed fact. Nevertheless, I wholly support AA. His attitude was unfortunate, but one rotten apple isn't sufficient to toss the barrel.

I do not want Pat Buchanan to be fired. I want MSNBC, preferably Fox News, to give him a spotlight show. All of us will know where he is and who shares his racist views. Rush, "Sepsis," Limbaugh, Falafel Bill O'Reilly, ken, and ilk will make it a ratings mega-max-super-hit. I will know which advertisers to avoid. Why feed evil?

I am not kidding, folks. The best way to beat them, is to show them. Expose all of them; from Congressmen down to Pat, and the bottom, preachers. It is fodder for mediamatters...one stop shopping, can you beat that?

Pat has no problem pretending that even after the signing of the Emancipation Proclomation in the late 1800's that black people were killed and arrested at a alarming high rate only because of the color of their skin.

Pat likes to forget that many whites felt blacks were free but not equal to whites and discriminated against them openly. Federal Troops were used to help integrate schools. Remember Pat?

Pat knows that America was built on a illegal system of prisoner leasing. Blacks were arrested on bogus charges and leased to white slave owners to help rebuild the South after their defeat in the Civil War.

This practice went on for hundreds of years and Pat talks like white people built this country by themselves. He knows better.

Seperate and equal opportunity is what affirmitive action guarentees people of color. I think Pat should accept that many have paid the price to see that whites never treat people af color so harshly again.

Pat is in denial that minorities are benititing from many of the programs that made the playing field equal for all and he opposed.
