I love it when millionaires call regular people cheap. Or when and ignoramus like Glenn Beck calls anybody stupid.

Has this idiot ever priced COBRA insurance. When my wife was in between teaching jobs it would have been $800 per month to cover just her. It is insane.

The reason is that with COBRA your premium is the total of what your employer would play plus 2% to COBRA. That is what makes it so high.

Yeah, and most people's employers cover ~80% of the cost! So you can easily see you premium go up 5x from what is was. And if your not pulliing down fox-anchor money, it's not like that 20% is exactly cheap.

Not only that, often you are unemployed when they ask you if you want to continue the coverage. COBRA has always been a joke as far as I am concerned.

Mine would have cost $1200 a month if I picked it up in December last year, and since I was only getting $392 a week for unemployment, that pretty much narrowed my choices down to health insurance and my family and I living under a bridge or a roof over our heads and no coverage. Now that I put that out there watch some nutbag come along and suggest I don't deserve to keep the house I bought and paid for over 16 years because I lost my job...

Same here, sort of. Luckily, my wife was still employed, and I was able to get on her plan until I found my new job. I dind't need the coverage, but it's nice to know that if I did, it would have been there.

Montly COBRA for me was about $900, and had I been single, I wouldn't have been able to afford it.

And why should it matter if she had to switch insurance and it was a preexisting condition. Cobra is expensive if you don't have lucrative radio and book deals. For the record, right now all I want to do is smack that smirk off his face, because you all know he was smirking through that entire thing.

Beck is completely out of touch with reality (if he ever was there.) My wife lost her job in Feb. when the FDA shut her company down. Her Cobra payment would have been almost $500.00 per month. How do you pay that on unemployment?

I guess Glenn has never had to buy Cobra. My wife and I were offered Cobra once... at $1300 a month.

Not many people can afford payments like that....but I guess that's chicken feed to a rich Hate Radio Jock.

By the way, where was all this demanding of "more details" when President Bush was scaring us into Iraq?

For that matter, maybe we should ask for more details when the Troglodytes trot out their Canadian Healthcare horror stories.

It strikes me that these people think everyone getting laid off are getting some kind of golden parachute so they can afford to spend the money as they ride out this bush recession. I guess they closed their eyes to the stories about companies offering little to no severance packages. I've got a friend who just had to take his 2nd three week without pay vacation this year!

Okay what does he mean he wants to know more about the cancer woman? Obama is making a speech and useing her as an example, he isn't going to stand there and hold up a picture, her address, SS number, and a copy of her certificate of live birth (good thing too because they might say she wasn't born in America). And yes Beck, anyone who doesn't have insurance is just because they are cheap or stupid. Propabaly has nothing to do with them not having enough money. And what the heck was he talking about him having to sign stuff before emergency surgery? so the guy was in a car wreck and his leg gets torn off, they take him to the hospital and don't put so much as a band-aid on it until he wakes up, and then he has to fill out a bunch of paper work before they give him the surgery. Yes Beck, that's propably how it goes.

I guess I must be stupid or cheap because I never heard of COBRA. I know that we considered bridge insurance when my daughter aged out of family coverage, but we couldn't afford the $400 a month to add her back to our plan. That may not sound like a lot, but that is what we pay for her rent while she is at college and we are just making our bills on a monthly basis, it is better for my family to gamble that she won't be in a car accident or have a ruptured appendix, than to pay for this bridge coverage. Only time will tell if we were wise or foolish. Many Americans make similar choices, of that, I am sure. And I have to say that I find it funny that Glenn, who jumps to wild conclusions about ACORN and unions, has problems accepting the President's examples. His deriding of Whoopie Goldberg for question whether we really landed on the moon was a perfect example of this hilarious hypocrisy! His whacko conspiracies are real and powerful, but her questioning an old one makes her a whackjob. Yeah! Right! I just think he did that because Whoopie gave him the stink eye when he was on the show. At least Whoopie was honest, she can't stand the guy and did her best to tolerate his presence on the show. She didn't freak out on him.

If she's in college now ask her to check with them about insurance. I know that the college my daughter is gonna attend this fall offers low cost insurance to students who don't have coverage, your daugter's college might as well.

My daughter has pre-existing conditions, so it is really difficult to find good coverage. The school program didn't cover her major issues, just the minor stuff. When she has gotten sick, we have paid the emergency room bill. She decided to change career goals because of insurance coverage. That too, is a common choice for other people.

Trust me, $400 a month sounds like plenty. It's a car payment for a lot of people. I, like many others, have sworn off credit cards recently, and it makes me realize just how foolishly we were spending. Every little bit counts. I just opted not to pay $80 a month for long term disability so that we can stay on a cash basis.

Department of Labor re: COBRA Continuing Health Coverage -

Beneficiaries may be required to pay for COBRA coverage. The premium cannot exceed 102 percent of the cost to the plan for similarly situated individuals who have not incurred a qualifying event, including both the portion paid by employees and any portion paid by the employer before the qualifying event, plus 2 percent for administrative costs.

For qualified beneficiaries receiving the 11 month disability extension of coverage, the premium for those additional months may be increased to 150 percent of the plan's total cost of coverage.

COBRA premiums may be increased if the costs to the plan increase but generally must be fixed in advance of each 12-month premium cycle. The plan must allow you to pay premiums on a monthly basis if you ask to do so, and the plan may allow you to make payments at other intervals (weekly or quarterly).

The initial premium payment must be made within 45 days after the date of the COBRA election by the qualified beneficiary. Payment generally must cover the period of coverage from the date of COBRA election retroactive to the date of the loss of coverage due to the qualifying event. Premiums for successive periods of coverage are due on the date stated in the plan with a minimum 30-day grace period for payments. Payment is considered to be made on the date it is sent to the plan.

If premiums are not paid by the first day of the period of coverage, the plan has the option to cancel coverage until payment is received and then reinstate coverage retroactively to the beginning of the period of coverage.

COBRA is expensive... I'm guessing it costs more than 1/3 of his take home pay.

How does a person who loses his job afford COBRA??

Glenn you're an idiot! Over 60% of Bankruptcy's are related to Health Care expenses and 75% of those Bankruptcy's were people who had insurance.

Recission is real and hurts people every day.

COBRA is only required to be offered by companies of a certain size (i believe that it requires a minimum of 50 employees). As has been previously stated, it is very expensive. I guess that I shouldn't be surprised that he questions the example of the woman who was denied treatment. I actually know 6 people with such stories. However, he accepts as the gospel truth any tale of any British or Canadian citizen (since he insists that we will get their health care systems) that died while waiting for treatment, that was denied treatment because they were too old, etc.

It would be nice if the media would challenge these anecdotal accounts. It seems that almost republican (and any other opponent of health care reform) has such a story. in fact this morning on CNBC, one of their guests told of the daughter of a friend who lives in Canada, that was diagnosed with cancer and was told to "take a ticket and wait for treatment". She was told that the waiting list was at least 9 months long. None of the CNBC talking heads challenged this tale or asked for further information. If I was sitting at that desk, I would have asked for his friends contact info so I could verify the story. But I suppose that is why I don't work for CNBC.

There have been Canadians and other UK citizens post on here. They say that theses claims by Beck & Hannity are false. There is no wait for emergencies and a short wait for non-emergencies. They also say that there only complaint about their health care is that France and Sweden have an even a better system then they do. My friends that live in these countries would never give up their health care system for ours.

I think it would be cheaper than $1300 per month to just live in a bubble. That should reduce your chance of needing major medical by like 95%.
In fact, is there a "bubble" discount? There should be. Insurers should provide them free (with no discount) so they can up their profit margin drastically.

If you're just going to the doctor for regular stuff, you'd be better off paying as you go, surely that would be less than $14,000 per year.

So by "switching" (making it ok for her insurance company to say no, apparently)--a.k.a. getting a new job--with her pre-existing condition makes the woman stupid and arrogant.

The second man, by "getting a new job" (but not getting COBRA in the meantime) is stupid too?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't, eh Glenn?

I have never felt the urge to slap anyone, like I do him. That smug, smirking fat face of his, turns my stomach. I know it's because I hate the fact, that some people actually believe the ugly, racist things he spews. I also hate the fact that he makes millions, to lie and mislead everyone. When there are so many honest, hardworking American citizens, that are barely getting by and can not even afford health care.
