David Shuster: "Everyone who has an independent, thinking mind, says this is crazy!

This reminds me of Adlai Stevenson's reply to the woman who told him that every "thinking American" would vote for him: "That's not enough, madam. I need a majority."

Shuster was downright vitriolic tonight. It was entertaining, but the answer to his question is that as crazy at is it, perpetuating the birther nonsense serves as a convenient distraction that rocks the boat just enough to perturb people, even if very view believe it.

Well, he was definitely intense, but I'd stop short of calling him vitriolic.

Hmm... yeah, I see your point. I guess it's more in comparison to his usual demeanor while taking over for Olbermann.

convenient distraction or appealing to their base? Look at those town hall clips, the people attending them and commenting are bringing up every irrational conspiracy theory forwarded by the right wing talk machine, and they are doing it with so much vitriol in their voices that you'd think they'd attack their own congressmen and women if they didn't get the responses they demand.

Shuster is a total loser. I am sorry but I have never thought much of him. How hard is it to understand that Liz Cheney and many other Republicans think there are poltical benefits in these lies about Obama's birth? Doesn't he realize this is the way the Republican Party works? The guy from the Boston Globe was spot on but DS is so defensive that it went right over his head. Rachel Maddow certainly gets it, I guess that is why she has her own primetime show and isn't just a fill in.

Why? Because wingnuts vote Republican. Wingnuts are the Republican base. To liz Cheney and others their attitude is Screw integrity...it's votes that count. I have to say they make John McCain look like a champ the way he told that woman at one of his town hall meetings that Barack Obama was not an "Arab" but a decent family man. Unfortunately Liz Cheney and other Republicans can't bring themselves to do the right thing when it comes to votes...and I assure you that Liz Cheney will soon be personally seeking votes herself.

One of the ironies of having McCain as one of my Sentators (Kyl is just another wingnut). Now, if McCain2000 had run (ref: Agents of Intolerance) instead of (coolaided) McCain2008, there actually would have been a chance I might have considered him.

Of course Liz Cheney said the country is going down the wrong path. She doesn't have a job and neither does her father. We need a war for these people to find work.

yes, i have to say shuster has been doing a satisfactory job as fill-in. he may not be good as the host of his own show, but he is decent as a guest sub. and this debate with pierce was great... would they have booked this guy if olbermann was there?

Shuster was being a good little GE employee trying desperately to defend the media from Pierce's well-founded charges. The birther nonsense is just another crazy distraction from the real issues confronting the country and Pierce brings up example after example of media complicity in lies, distortions and fabrications.
Shuster's lame protestations the "we've asked her to come on and she won't" belies Pierce's larger point. Prominent Republicans gain from having issues with no legs survive because media producers will always book anything that garners "eyes" which is what Pierce laid out in his excellent book.
Shuster is oblivious to the point Pierce is making over and over. Goes right over his head.

Pierce is absolutely correct in bringing up MSNBC's, (among others), complicity regarding this issue. Ms. Cheney is given a regular forum, on the Joe and Mika bandwagon, and other NBC venues. David Shuster, is a solid interviewer, but, he apparently, didn't want to get into that. Interesting, that CNN personalities, are now openly going after Lou Dobbs on the birther issue. I wish the folks on MSNBC, would show some fortitude, and openly refute some of their morning drivel.

I don't see how Shuster was playing into this birther nonsense. He clearly thinks it's false and is saying it loudly and proudly.

That was the most telling part of the interview for me: the fear in Shuster's eyes as he tried to steer Pierce away from pointing out that MSNBC has been as guilty as anyone in giving Cheney a soapbox from which to shout her GOP talking points and throw raw meat to the crazies. At least Pierce was able to get "Morning Joe" out amidst Shuster's desperate denials about Cheney declining to appear on Countdown. It makes you wonder what goes on at the MSNBC editorial meetings--Shuster's attitude seems to be that as long as they run Countdown and Maddow, there's nothing wrong with carrying Republican water the rest of the day.

how did this wacko neocon slip into the keith olbermann's show. I thought the msnbc producer screens their guests before they come on keiths's show. My ears bleed just listening to this wacky daffy duck character with his scruffy a$$ beard support Lynne.

The media help drive this foolishness by entertaining these idiots; and they do so believing it will have a negative impact on the President.
Anybody with common sense knows that when something has been proven, there is no need to revisit it, yet the media does just that. These kinds of pachydermatous people should be ignored.
What the media needs to do is expose these people for what they really are, RACIST, because this is the reality of the situation. These people who do not accept the truth are guided by hate and ignorance. That is what should be reported. Anything else is an insult to humanity.

We all know Republicans bash anything Democrat and vice versa, but I can never remember a time where any person on either side of the spectrum brought the opponent's birth certificate into question. I mean, I don't think George Bush was against Kerry and said "well, I don't think he was even born here!". I mean, I hate to say that it's racist, because there's a huge difference between racist and racial, but this is certaintly a racial thing. Because he doesn't "look the part" of a President.. (go figure).. he can't POSSIBLY be from the US... that just.. it really bothers me.

Not only does it put down the great achievement of even becoming President of the United States as a person of color, but imagine the undertones it has to the inner-city kids who were overjoyed to see someone that "looks like them" become president, this reverberates through much more than Barack Obama.
