Good for Mr. Eagleburger! He sure let Greta know what he thought. North Korea loves to play brinksmanship, and they love to appear generous and benevolent. This was bound to happen, once the women were taken, I could see it coming months ago. They wanted to appear harsh, and they wanted a chance to talk to Clinton, because his administration had been reasonable towards them. They get to have their ego stroked and appear mericiful. It cost us very little and it freed two women. It may also have lowered tensions throughout Asia. Isn't that a good thing?

        No, if you're a republican.

According to everyone from Bolton to our local rightie mouthpieces, this was tantamount to "rewarding N. Korea for bad behavior". I have to say, though, that I'm happy to hear that they now consider a visit from prez Clinton a "reward".

        Frickin' posers.

I lived in Asia for ten years, I have extensive contact with the Korean mindset, which doesn't seem to change much on either side of the 38th, this whole idea of grabbing something and making a lot of noise about being in the right and being tough, but all the time waiting to be asked politely is a something that is played out over and over again between Westerners and Koreans on big and small issues. The Korean Penninsula is small, it has been abused in the past, and it wants respect, but once it gets a bit of respect and consideration, the mindset can be very generous. The Clinton Administration understood that, the Bush Administration never did. In the meantime, millions of North Koreans starved or died needlessly because of stubborness on both sides. North Korea was subject to massive floods and an ongoing famine when I was in Asia, I am sure it has only worsened.

            I appreciate the first-hand experience.

The trouble that conservatives have is misunderstanding a culture where honor is so highly valued, and having no understanding of the attitude of a people with nothing to lose.

It is a 100% good thing. Anyone sho says otherwise is cowarldy, traitorous scum, once again selling out what America ACTUALLY stands for - Freedom, Democracy, Free-Think ing and HUMAN RIGHTS.

Wow. So a lame excuse to go to war was averted. Once again, only the treacherous scum on the right woudl see this as a bad thing. American Citizens are home, and we lose nothing as a nation.

GOOD FOR YOU BILL CLINTON! JOB WELL DONE!

Successful diplomatic missions undermine the right wing philosophy of how we manage our place in the world. Can't wait to hear their spin on this - since they can't attack the outcome itself, I'm guessing they'll just make some stupid comment about Clinton and the "mile high club" or something equally as juvenile.

I can just imagine that Faux was having a hissy fit all evening that a Democrat was successful at freeing two fellow Americans.
Greta is obviously quite unhinged that Clinton and America won.

WRONG!! I watched your favorite, Bill O'Reilly. He, Laura Ingraham and Glenn Beck were all thrilled the women were released and it made no difference to them that a democrat did it. If you actually watched Fox rather than relying on what MMFA cherry-picks for you, you might have a somewhat different view of the network.

I actually do catch Faux once in a while. That's good news if what you say is true, but most of what i've seen is either sensationalized crap or manufactured outrage about their own lying interpretation of events.

No doubt Fox thinks two female journalists not working for them are somehow traitors.

Two female journalists who are brown people none-the-less.

It will only be a matter of time before the teabaggers will be screeching that the journalists gave away classified secrets or some other loony conspiracy.

Fox's coverage is an embarassment because they had no skin in the game. They are throwing out line like "no negotiating with terrorist" and they are attacking President Obama out of both sides of their mouth. They are blaming him for sending President Clinton as a non-governmental envoy and then they say that he has no control in this matter because it took a non-governmental envoy to get the pardon of these two Americans.

This was a great moment in Diplomacy... something the right dismisses as weakness. Fox has no understanding of the importance of "saving face" in the Asian nations... there was no tangible gains by N. Korean regime and if this leads to improved relations and a ratching down of the rhetoric and fear on both sides, than it's a good thing.

How we so quickly forget that N. Korea was opening up to the US until President Bush Jr. declare them part of the Axis of Evil... that was a stupid move that boxed N. Korea in a corner and destroyed any gains that were created in the prior decade.

Excellent post. I agree, this proves that diplomacy is a reality and should ALWAYS be employed first. Reich-wingers rather just go straight to dropping bombs and murdering citizens. GOPigs have no concept of diplomacy and victory through peaceful and humane means. The fact that teabagging hicks are having a hissy fit is so telling. They actually do hate seeing America win.

I don't think they hate seeing America win so much as hate seeing a Democrat scoring points for their country.

People the world over hate America, and this diplomatic, successful visit to an oppressive and dangerous country will probably impress more than a few people. But it wasn't a conservative who made the trip, so FOX has to sic 'em.

For grins I clicked over to Faux and right now the only thing they are concerned about is what "Clinton gave them". They are not concerned about the well-being of our fellow citizens, or how they were treated, or how unjust the trial and process was....no, they are concerned that a powerless former president was able to actually give NK something. Idiots. America Wins!

The Right seems to forget that Condi rice was working with the N. Koreans to ease tensions during Bushs' 2nd term.
But , as usual, why dwell on the past?....ONLY BECAUSE IT MATTERS.

Haven't been to Freeperville but I am sure that they have commented on Clinton being on the plane with these two journalists.

The whole point of sending a non-governmental envoy was to ensure that nothing tangible could be "given" to the N. Koreans... doesn't Fox realize that? Of course they don't

No real negotiations could take place because President Clinton was not a government representative... but his stature as a former President gave N. Korea the "face saving" stature that they need to pardon the prisoners without looking weak.

Why is this so difficult to understand... oh wait... Fox hates America... that's why.

What Clinton gave the North Koreans was a few photo ops and some after dinner conversation.

Not a bad deal to free two Americans.

Faux is snarling and hissing that they must report some good news, and boo hoo, it's really hard to spin into a negative. And of all low blows, it's good news involving the CLINTONS!!!

They're out of the loop totally on this story, so they're busy piling up a teabag bunker to fend off any light and reality that might seep into their studios.

Good for him. Fox need to learn not to make everything so partisan. There is no side to this issue. We wanted the journalists freed and President Clinton delivered. What difference does it make whether he's a Dem or a Rep?

I wish Eagleburger was a member of MMFA so I could give this speech the offical thumbs up.

Oh and thumbs up to Greta as well for not jumping down Eagleburgers throat when he didnt give the standard line like most of FOX would have.

Eagleburger proves for better or worse that not all republicans are idoits and conspiracy nuts. (I'm a Dem, but I'd prefer having a well informed and creative opposition who can help out whole country come together and solve things then the idoits on the other side today)
