The one reason Canada isn't as screwed up as Europe is because Canadians can still come here for surgeries and mammograms instead of waiting a year or so for those procedures and avoid rationing and "end of life consulting".

If Obamacare does arise, Canadians will be as screwed as the Euros.

Who's screwed? We spend a lot more, and yet have far less positive outcomes. This whole notion of rationing nonsense is way overblown, and has been refuted by many people who have actually BEEN IN the systes over there. So stop parroting Rush Limbaugh. There's no reason to believe everything (or anything) he tells you, becuase he LIES a LOT. (There's this great website you should check out that documents all his falsehods....)

        What a laugh, Eddie.
You really want to go with mammogram waits in Canada? You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. A mammogram in Canada is probably one of the easiest things to get.

And surgeries? Well, yes you can expect a wait for some elective surgeries mainly because of an aging population. But here's the rub, you will get the elective surgery. Don't want to wait? Fine. In Canada, if you have the money you have the option to head south. You'll get your surgery and someone in Canada gets theirs sooner. But at least you have the option.

What option do you have here if you can't afford insurance or you've been denied insurance? You go into debt or you don't get the help. That is your only option.

As someone who was fortunate enough to have experienced the Canadian system for part of my life I can tell you the system is not perfect, but then what system is? However, I can tell you this with certainty---the Canadian health care system is light years ahead of the US system. No one is denied care. No one faces bankruptcy. No one has their coverage ripped from them at the moment they need it the most. And over 80% of Canadians wouldn't trade their health care for the American system for anything.

You talk about waits, Eddie, and I couldn't agree more. The people who have waited the longest for affordable and accessible health care are us.

Rubbish. Look at any objective measures of public health - life expectancy, infant mortality, cancer survival rates - and Canada compares more than favourably with the American system. As for waiting times, I cite a personal example - due to a lifelong love of sports, I have managed to wear out both my knees. I consulted my family physician (yes, the one I chose myself) in late May, was referred to an osteoarthritis clinic for assessment and had an appointment 10 days later, was then referred to a specialist who saw me after three weeks and had a surgical date set for September 1 (they subsequently offered an earlier date but I had already made all my arrangements for September and gratefully declined). So from an initial discussion with my doctor to total knee replacement surgery in about three months, for non-emergency care, seems entirely reasonable to me. Call it socialism (or anything else for that matter) if you like - I call it a fair and effective distribution of care. While I fully respect the world-leading research and medical innovation that the US is rightfully recognized for, I believe that any system that allows 45 million of its citizens to be cast adrift is badly broken and needs to be reformed.

Eddiebear, go back and read the posts by the guy from Canada. He asked where Rush, Hannity and Beck got this stuff. That it is not true. There is no wait for emergencies and a short wait for non emergencies. He also went on to say, the only real complaint they have, about their health care is that France and Sweden have an even better plan. He said none of them would want the health care system we have. There are other similar posts from folks in the UK. Also my friends that have lived their all their lives, my sister in law that is from the UK and friends that have relocated to the UK all, everyone of them say the U.S. needs socialized health care.
That is not to say that we do not already have awesome doctors and health care facilities, that from time to time people from other countries that can afford it, will also use. We have them we just need to make it possible for all our citizens to have access to them. Americans that can afford it, have also gotten health care from doctors in France, Germany, Sweden and other countries as well.

You are completely mistaken if you think the UK and especially France and Sweden are screwed.

I think Boss Hogg meant to say "brain dead", not "dead right", but was just protecting Palin from Obama's execution squads. I've heard that they're going to eliminate non-productive citizens with limited brain functions.

Speaking of brain-dead non-productive people, I just heard that Joe the Plumber will be participating in a Funniest Celeb in Washington stand-up comedy competition. How is he going to top his hilarious performance during the last election?
