Stewart did not have to put any effort at all into revealing her as a deceptive mouthpiece for insurance companies and the party of NO.

Not only was he informed enough to combat her nonsense, but this "comedian" ran circles around most of the (he-hem) journalists, who lack the intelligence or will to expose people like this for the disingenuous
        twits that they are.

Gee, that was very odd. Somebody actually did their homework and revealed McCaughey for the screeching fraud she is. Too bad it was left to a comedian on a cable comedy channel to do the job mainstream journalists should have been doing all along.

I hope some so-called journalists were watching Stewart and taking notes, but in reality I know she'll be back on TV tomorrow... unchallenged in her claims and still called an expert.

This is true. And it is the reason why John Stewart is who he is. There was a time when being smart and paying attention to details were the traits of journalists. Not anymore, it seems.
And the people lose as a result.

I just finished watching the show and the clips here on the west coast. I was sober before it started. I now need a drink. I literally can't figure out McCaughey's objections, nor can I grasp what she wants to accomplish. It was a though she is on a hyperactive yet logic-numbing drug.

I honestly don't comprehend how McCaughey thinks. She seems to be completely consumed by the knots on the trees and unable to comprehend (or explain) either a tree or the forest. She's not stupid, but she doesn't seem to listen well. She seems unable to persuade from a factual basis, but resorts to appeals to the crowd and an appeal to authority. (a PhD in constitutional history is not the same as law and the ability to write, read or comprehend law)

I've spent a fair amount of the past year reading health care reimbursement documentation (my appeal to credential) from both Medicare and private insurers for a new medical device we have in trials in Europe and hope to get to the US in the next year or so. I read Section 1233 a couple weeks ago and it's a pretty simple data capture and "best practices" analytical piece. Like all Medicare reimbursements it lays out a set of procedures and the specifications to be met for compensation.

BTW, my European and Canadian medical business associates have watched this absurd healthcare "debate" and have come to the conclusion that Americans have proven we not only deserved Dubya, but he was one of our smartest citizens.

Even if all nonsensical things she said concerning that passage was true (which they clearly aren't as Jon Stewart demonstrated), any attempts to liken it to something resembling the "death panels" is as Stewart put it, hyperbole if she wants to admit it or not. I like how he caught her for going on and talking about how seniors would be affected by cuts in medicare spending even though she can't possibly know whether they or anyone else for that matter would actually experience cutbacks.

It was almost painful to watch. You have to know going in that Stewart's nobody's yes man. He's smart and he'll go after you. McCaughey was so unprepared for any real questions.

You KNOW what Stewart's going to want to talk about. She should have been ready. Even if they disagreed. She just came across as a complete nitwit.

Don't get me wrong, I want people to find the problems with this plan before it's in place. But I also want them to tell the truth.

The best way to make these people real is to ask them to describe the exact words that they say are so bad. It does no good to use the same ad hominem attacks that they do. Ask where the opinion comes from, where the words they say are so bad exist.

It was just extraordinary the way he handled her torrent of BS. She’s skillful, but he’s better. And how cool is it that Stewart had actually read the relevant section of the bill! I can't even imagine any other TV host -- or even a news anchor -- doing that. And he’s so incredibly LUCID about it, it just blows me away. Let's face it, he's one of the smartest people in television news -- and yeah, there's no point backing off from that categorization: he says it's a fake news show, but it's the realest sstuff on the airwaves.

I have to get up early in the morning, so I can't see the Daily Show when it comes on. I seem to be missing out on a whole lot of really good information delivered with wit. I have of course seent the polls that show Daily Show and Colbert Report viewers to be the best informed, and I am understand why. It takes a lot of knowledge and understanding of the issues to skewer them as they do. Bravo!

Perhaps I am a simple mind. But my favorite part was right at the outset when she came on the set with her large binder of the House bill saying that it was "sooooo BIG" at 1,000+ pages.

Then when she opens it, you see that it is the old large ring binder and printed on 1 side of each paper!!

That's pretty typical from the right wingers, isn't it? Use technology from the 1970s, waste paper and claim that a bill is much, much too big for them to have to actuall read & understand!

So, she brings this massive "prop" out, turns to page 432 so she can tell us what it says - never actually reading the words to us. She didn't need to bring it at all, did she?

The woman has a PhD in History and she behaves as though she is some sort of expert on interpreting legal language.

        Astounding.

THIS is why Jon Stewart is the most trusted name in news.

      CNN......eat your heart out.

How IS it that this comedian with his small staff, is able to reference all the facts, any/all old video clips, manage NOT to loose audio and video feed, never have ANY blackouts......and CNN cannot?

How IS it that this comedian is the only one on TV to have the integrity to call these wackos out on their insanity.

How IS it, that when he criticizes the president, it is more "fair and balanced" than any other "news media"

And just how is it that as a comedian, Jon Stewart, provides the best journalistic news on TV?

I do not for one second believe that an old lady looked up at Betsy McCaughey from her death bed and said, "Hurry." Unless it was, as Stewart suggested, that she wanted her to leave. Why do politicians always make up these ridiculous stories?

I loved the bit where McCaughey said that the person or family should be able to 'change their mind' about a living will. What? If a person is still in their right mind they could change the living will whenever they want. THis bill would not change that. So what she's really saying is that the family should be able to decide whether or not to adhere to the living will. What's the point of a living will if someone else can override it?

They touched on a core problem with our health system, the profit function of the industry.

The health system is a public safety issue. Just like the Police and Fire departments. It's a shame that the Police and Fire Departments aren't for profit... right? <sarcasm>

In the UK, doctors are paid well and are wealthy, but there is no expectation of great wealth like it is often portrayed here. Doctors and nurses work for the government, just like Policeman and Fireman. It's a service to your government and community.

I believe in the capitalist system for business. If you want to manufacture a widget to sell in the open market, then the free market is the best process in the world. But the problem in America is that we are accustomed to the fact that the quality of our health is a business. We call it the Health Care Industry, don't we.

Any industry where the ultimate goal is the irridication of what they service is not an industry, it's a public service. Crime and Fires are horrible things that we as a society pay for to fight, just like sickness and disease is to the Health System.

But, Fire and Police departments don't suffer when there are no fires or crime, and when there is too much of it, we question the quality of their work. In the Health Care Industry, they profit as the condition of society worsens.

This is why all industrialized nations provide health care...except us. There is no money to be made in wellness.
