A few years ago, when gasoline was averaging over four dollars a gallon, Will "helpfully" pointed out to all of us whiners that when one adjusted for inflation, it turned out that gasoline actually cost less than it did in 1974. That was Will's response to the average shmoe's struggle to pay for gasoline- that it was more expensive during the energy crisis of the 1970s.

Will probably had to ask his driver how much gasoline cost before he came on the program. This guy probably hasn't checked the price of anything for decades. Just another overpaid, spoiled-rotten, overrated yakker who has spent most of his adult life doing a poor imitation of an intelligent person on tv.

Yes, I think all of us average Joe's are incredibly greatly served by taking advice from rich DC insiders like George Will because clearly he understands "real America" and has us pegged!

Hey George...spoken like a true man of the people. I'm sure middle-class Americans and seniors who are struggling with the cost of drugs agree with your excellent observation...sheesh.

Someone should ask him if he thinks the Drug companies make a profit. He probably isn't sure. what a jerk. But ask him how his Pharma portfolio is doing and he'll know the actual stock price to the minute.
That line "First of all, do drugs cost too much? I don't know if they cost too much" should be a strong nominee for stupiderest, lyingerest, dumberest line of the year. Even Hannity isn't that big a liar...well, maybe not.

George said if you took all the profits out of the pharmaceutical industry its total cost to our health care would shrink from 10% to 8%. First, this is a 20 profit margin, a great profit margin one where most companies would be accused of gauging the consumer. Second, he talks about how it cost over a billion dollars to get some drugs from conception to market. Therefore, he hopes they can make a ton of money to continue producing drugs. This cost is mostly marketing the drugs, trying to find a way to put a new patent on an old drug and lobbist. Almost all the pharmaceutical research done in the United States is done on the university level and is paid for by the government. They are not pumping the money directly in research they are pumping the money into ways to maintain their revenue streams.
George should stick to talking about subjects which he knows about, like baseball.

I'll tell my friend whose husband's treatment for multiple myeloma was recently denied because BC/BS said it was "unnecessary." The real reason it was denied? It cost $16,000/MONTH!
