McCain on waterboarding: "I believe that it is torture, very exquisite torture"

Shep Smith: "Pol Pot was a big fan of this waterboarding action. Now we get some lawyers around the table and want to pretend like it's not torture."

Hannity misrepresented bipartisan Washington Monthly essay collection, which included these statements:

  • Former Rep.Bob Barr (R-GA): "Waterboarding is, in essence, a torturer's best friend-easy, quick, and nonevidentiary. It had always been considered torture by civilized governments such as ours-until, of course, this administration."
  • Former Dep. Secretary of State Richard Armitage and Reagan White House chief of staff Ken Duberstein: "Let there be no mistake: waterboarding is torture-and it should never be used by the United States. No less a hero than John McCain will attest to this."
  • Then-Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE): During World War II, U.S. interrogators "acquired" valuable "information without resorting to abusive techniques, such as waterboarding, that are considered to be torture."

Kondracke: Waterboarding "doesn't result in any lasting damage"

I'd be flip and say "Let's waterboard her, and then see what she has to say," but waterboarding is torture and I wouldn't want to give the order to torture anyone. As my favorite principal used to say, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." It is quite obvious that Ms. Cheney has no moral scruples when it comes to national security and she doesn't care who knows it. I think her father is evil, how guilty is she by association? Close, and getting closer by the day, based on these comments. Sad, really.

Oh no, she would never say that, because it was Americans being tortured! It's clearly a case of do as I say and not as I do.

Why is this woman on TV again ?

      "My daddy didn't do it"

Sounds like an episode of Cops.

        Why INDEED!

Especially since she carries her daddy's genetic trait of fact-from-whole-cloth creationism.

Her past performances show that she could care less about the truth and her concept of a panel discussion is: interrupt, talk endlessly, repeat.

The only plausible answer for the Disney/ABC water-carrier: George digs him the blonde chicks.

She's on TV because the media desperately needs to defend torture, because they were and are complicit in enabling it.

Exactly...! Why is this lying, right wing neocon, apologist spawn on television? What has she ever done such that her opinion about ANYTHING is worthy of any attention? What...? Her only claim to fame is that her father was a powerful, manipulative Vice-President who deserves to be in jail. Get this little Mini-Me of a Cheney off the stage...!

Otherwise how about having Ron Reagan, Amy Carter, Chelsea Clinton or Al Gore's daughters on these talk shows talking about what a lying piece of carp Dick Cheney and Liz Cheney are?

Exactly. Why are they allowing this woman and her father to continue to lie on television? Well, the reason is that they are trying to "P** in the jury pool." Cheney and his creepy daughter are attempting to sway opinion due to the possible arrest of Cheney for his crimes.

The cable opinion networks and the actual media make me want to scream. This woman and her lies are NOT a story.

Threatening a prisoner with imminent death is very clearly illegal, Liz. U.S, CODE: Title 18, CHAPTER 113C specifically states threatening a prisoner with imminent death is considered torture as is "the threat that another person will imminently be subjected to death, severe physical pain or suffering..."

Oh, and Liz's argument in stating there has to be evidence that can stand up in a court of law that torture occurred before we can have an investigation into whether torture occurred is so demonstrably false. All that is required is reasonable suspicion that a crime took place.

Apparently Liz Cheney is more qualified and knows more about what constitutes torture than, say, the Army Field Manual and the authors of the Geneva Conventions.

It is astoundingly ridiculous that the MSM and interviewers are too scared to challenge her on such things.

And Federal Law. We have prosecuted people IN THIS COUNTRY for waterboarding. James Parker of San Jacinto County, Texas, and his deputies were prosecuted and CONVICTED in 1983 of waterboarding prisoners.

It's TORTURE and it is ILLEGAL.

Lets not forget that Liz Cheney has this fountain of knowledge of top secret information that only her dad and top officials knew about. So, she can magically speak to what was and was not discussed at these top level meetings in which she would have no clearance for.

She really is a piece of work. What has this country come to when we're allowed to threaten people with rape and death? How in the hell is the prisoner going to know that you were only "bluffing"?? You've only been simulating he drowning 83 times in a month.

Look, what Liz Cheney means is that waterboarding is not torture, but a simulation of torture, designed by our own military for the SERE program.
SERE stands for survival, evasion, resistance and
escape, and teaches members of our military how to do those thing if they are ever captured by an enemy force. Is it unpleasant? Yes. It is supposed to be, but it was also designed to be nonlife threatening, nor to leave any lasting damaged to the US pilots, mavy seals, green berets, subjected to it. Nothing can, however, train anyone to withstand real torture, the breaking of arms and legs, beatings and whippings that go
on for hours or days at a time. being held in solirary confinement for years, with only a bowl of unsanitary soup or rice a day for food, and barely any water. John McCain and other POW's suffered much worse in Vietnam, and for a longer period of time, than did any of the high level detainees at Gitmo, or otther US facilities. And if they were waterboarded
      they were not tortured!

          Like Hitchens did.

He railed on and on about how it wasn't torture for the longest time, or for a little while at least. And then he agreed to let himself be subjected to it to prove once and for all, it ins't torture.

          He lasted about 2 seconds.

And has changed his mind about it.

I think that other guy, Mancow did the same thing. Blah, blah, it's not torture, and then he tried it out. Turns out, he thinks it is now as well.

And those were very controlled conditions, and they were able to get out of it as soon as they wanted to. Now think about it being done to someone, in our name, and how they have no choice at all.

Liz Cheeny is odious. TV producers stop booking her now! She is partisan like few I've ever seen and what are her qualifications anyway? Also, she is annoying, not polite and talks way over her alloted time, every time. Why should we trust anything that she says? I'd like to see more Democrats on TV pease instead of the same elite GOP hacks. They do not speak for the entire country.

That's a great point. Why are people listening to her about what she thinks about torture? What makes her so qualified to answer these questions? Its not like she was there when it happened or sat on any high level meetings that her dad was in on. Its like asking Joe the Plumber on what stocks to buy.

With her ability to stick to basic talking points, she must have been water boarded by her dad at least 80 or so times a month as a kid.
