      And we're off!

All time greatest hits being played here today folks!

Never you mind that his example, doesn't hold up. As in, Sotomayor was extremely well qualified for the position that she was appointed to, and was confirmed at.

Never you mind that in the entire history of our country, there have been zero, ZERO, Latina justices.

I mean, if affirmative action were the boogey man that these guys all proclaim, then why is the power structure in our country (and around the world for that matter) almost exclusively white, and male?

The racism is in the critics of Sotomayor who lie, twist, and torture the English language to try and make people believe she said things she never said.

        Feel-good happy talk for racists.

It's why you can't really care too much about the pinheads who come to this site and try to "explain" how old white guys are victims and everybody else is racist and sexist. They're exposed to hours of pablum like this, from enablers like Davis ,who help them explain their personal failures through some fictional oppressed -old- white- person fantasy.

I don't know about the Sotomayor angle, but is affirmative action in itself, a racist program? Putting someone ahead of another based solely on skin color or ethnicity sounds like it.

If it were such a program, then yes.

But since affirmative action is not about putting others ahead just because of skin color, than no, it's not a racist program.

            From Wikipedia...

...In the United States, affirmative action refers to policies that take gender, race, or ethnicity into account in an attempt to promote equal opportunity and increase ethnic diversity in workplaces and schools.

How is using anything other than credentials for workplaces and schools not racist?

First you say, "Putting someone ahead of another based solely on skin color or ethnicity..".

But, then you post, "affirmative action refers to policies that take gender, race, or ethnicity into account..."

Do you see the difference or do you need help with the big words?

How is taking anything other than merit for either employment or school admission or anything, not showing preferential treatment, and thus racial? Biased? Slanted? based entirely on sex, race, or ethnicity?

. The intended beneficiaries of affirmative action in the United States include historically disadvantaged ethnic minorities, women, people with disabilities, and veterans.

From the same wiki article you stopped reading. And why would there be a need to Affirmative Action in these cases, Dave?

That's what I'm asking, how is this program not racial, etc? If someone is getting preferential treatment against someone else based on other factors and not simply merit, ie skin color, is the program not racial, as Davis has stated? I'm not claiming the program does or does not have value, but it clearly has a racial tone.

Its funny if we got rid of affirmative action we would still have white "affirmative action" legacy and cronyism. No need for affirmative action at all cause when I look into 9 out of 10 corporate board rooms I'll see at least one ethnic and one woman ........*looks around* well I'll be darned it doesn't work like that. Either ethnics or women aren't getting a chance to get these positions or they just aren't as intelligent or savvy as whites males to get near the same results.

Especially after having to be better than all the whites males in their field don't ya think its just fair to give it to the ethnic, disabled, or female if they are equally qualified? Since that is what affirmative action is used for. Or how about that on average more white males are under-qualified for their jobs while on average ethnics or females tend to be overqualified for their line if work.

If it were my company, I would give it to the one most qualified...period. No preferences.

The problem is that if given two equally qualified persons, the original Affirmative Action would mean the 'minority' gets an extra point, similar to Veteran's Preference.
"Quotas" and 'less qualified' are Neocon talking points.

"I think that might be Davis' point. You nailed it."

No you nailed that you are ignorant to the matter. AA has saved companies because the path you take brings intangibles that some don't want to acknowledge. Even with quotas now in most situations you just have to interview an ethnic. Davis' point is that they are giving the jobs to LESS qualified people. You either can't see it or refuse to see it. Even if you fantasize that he meant that they were equally qualified what is the problem with that since 9 times out of 10, many advantages are given to whites especially those who are well off. If this discrimination is so horrible why isn't there an abundance of diversity in most high salary jobs.....why are most boardrooms mostly white males?

Also Dave the thing is that it's NOT YOUR company. Many of the companies use the white male affirmative action and that's why the boardrooms are a white wash. It doesn't matter what you would do. I would never kill a person unless my life is threatened but that won't lower the murder rate. I would never litter but that won't clean some the trashy streets. You want to hide behind your fantasy that everyone is like you and doesn't discriminate. Think about it...if you look at most of the successful ethnics or women they had to be better than any white male just so they could be the only ethnic or woman. Also though affirmative action helps to casts another shadow that can be used against ethnics and women through cynically attributing all their success to AA.

Actually everyday I pray and look forward to a day when we won't need affirmative action but that is NOT TODAY my friend that is not today. When a milestone like a black president is reached and Americans react with killing, destruction, and hate. When you can look into corporate boardrooms and it seems like the door has a whites only sign on it.
Dave I want you to be right.....one day.
