      oh. my. god.

a building in NYC is proof of the grand unified conspiracy theory that Barack Obama is Hitler! (or wait.. Mussolini? I thought Obama was a secret Kenyan Muslim.. I get all of these theories confused.)

seriously.. Beck is now seeing his madness manifest itself in buildings and artwork.

What stage of madness is that?

Okay, Glenn, that was a really good attempt at art criticism for a freshman introductory class.

The problem is, you have colored outside the lines. How do I put this? Your interpretation is interesting, partly in that it draws so heavily from the realm of politics, but your interpretation is also only an opinion. A strongly held opinion, yes, but opinion nonetheless.

If you stay within just American art, it is well to note that the sun does not always symbolize 'the bright tomorrow'. The wheel has so many possibly symbolic meanings that it is difficult to list them all. You mentioned industry, so allow me to add any concept of cycles, such as seasons, life and death, moon phases, the cyclical ebb and flow of tides or political opinions. This doesn't begin to touch ideas like perfection, infinity, etc. Even within what you are pleased to call Conservative Art, all these items have multiple symbolic meaning.

Even if you are absolutely correct about all your assertions, which would mean you have access to the artist's intentions among other unlikely things, it still doesn't matter. Artist intentions are only part of the general criticism of any piece of art, and meaning, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Sounds like Becky wants to take down the artwork.

Hmm, now who was it that had a problem with some artwork and a while back? Oh, that's right... the Taliban when they destroyed the giant Buddha because it didn't conform to their way of thinking.

The Taliban and Becky... completely unrelated.

So, Beck thinks he's here to enlighten us all... with his smashing ratings... (this clip made absolutely no sense, by the way)

"You are not alone. Last week TV was #1 3nights in a row. On first showing only and no other media APX:1 out of every 100 americans watched."

I don't mean to get all Mathy on him, and I usually care less about ratings (and Twitter), but isn't 1/100 just 1%? Really, Beck? 99% of people can't or WON'T watch you.

Just watching this video tells me a lot more than Beck's delusional interpretation of some obscure piece of art.

It tells me that Beck is now ready for his meds.

That tin-foil cap of his must have fallen off somewhere. Can someone please find it, so he'll stop hearing those voices in his head?

It's a sad day for America that a major network (regardless of how we feel about them, Fox is a major network) gives lunatics like Beck air time.

        Some additional info....

As noted, the sculpture was created around the time of Mussolini.

This would mean it was probably created around the time of the great depression.

        So, my interpretation is:

The sun and young man symbolizes the hope of a better day.

The wheel, well let's just consider the entire chariot, symbolizes work, effort, industry, etc. The effort it takes to pull yourself up to move toward a new day.

Kind of sums up the way many people were thinking in that time-period.

        It's actually a pro-capitalistic message.

If Mr. Beck wants to interpret symbols, he may want to analyze the fasces in the Senate chamber. (Look it up.)

Correction (this is what I get for posting BEFORE my morning coffee)

The fasces are in the House Chamber, not Senate.

And, it's sprinkled all over various symbols of our government.

So, Beck doesn't have to stretch his limited imagination much, to find real symbols of fascism on buildings. He can start with the House Chamber in D.C.

and you are correct. That's why Beck "is the only one who knows what this is" because Beck is the only one, who sees it his way.

Only the right would see it as holding back capitalism.

I have to add again, I hate how he says injun for the word engine.

It was Art Deco architecture, it was a style that was popular from 1920-1945. Some of the most striking buildings in New York, Chicago, and Los Angles are built in that style. Does he know for sure that the man represents Mussolini or is he just assuming that because the artist was Italian. It was very popular to use Egyptian and Assyrian motifs at this time, too, does that make those buildings friendly to Al Qaeda? In any case, the building has been there for 70 years, I don't know of anyone who has been as offended by it as Becky, and I don't know of anyone who endorsed Fascism after seeing it, but really, Becky is the one who should know about Fascists, he seems to like a lot of their ideas.

GLENN BECK SMARTEST MAN IN THE WORLD!

It drives me nuts that nobody knows what this is.

It's been there 70 years and only Glenn Beck knows what it is.

What's his point? That this old art work, is also part of some great conspiracy, that Obama is also a part of? Oh I get it President Obama, saw this art work when he was young, got the idea for the "Obama Youth Group" to take over the world. To take Beck's country away from him. It all makes sense now. Wow, who knew the etchings in those old buildings were so powerful? Oh, right Beck knew.

To illustrate just how smart he is, and per my post earlier, if he REALLY wanted to link art to fascism, he could start with the House Chamber in D.C.

          Go to this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasces

There are images in there showing what I am talking about.

Then, go near the bottom. There's an interesting stamp with this symbol.

See, the whole damn government is Fascist! :-)

And the Lincoln Memorial, his hands actually rest on Fasci. Much of Washington has these symbols, which meant a lot to the Founding Fathers before Mussolini came along to taint them. Oh, and as near as I can figure from Google Maps, the building now houses a Faconnable store and may be part of Nordstrom's...hardly Communist or Fascist.

Thanks, I had noticed some of those years ago. Beck has no idea what it is he protests. These sound like big, bad, scary intimidating words. Fascism, Marxism, Communism & Socialism he throws them out at random to stress some point, that usually boils down to, Obama is bad and all his policies have to be bad. Beck can not conceive, of there being any good points, in a party with any of the above titles. They have to be totally evil.

Truth is, if a society picked out just the good from each of "these titles", combined them, enforced them and lived by them, we would have a great society.

Don't y'all just like how the images of the fasces sprinkled about our "pillars of govt" contrasts with its image on the stamp along with Hitler and Mussolini? Isn't this fun?

See how Fox just tends to leave some very obvious details out?

They are either complete idiots, or they're purposely twisting things around -- or both.

            Personally, I'm thinking both.

Personally, I think you're right, too. The Fasci are an ancient symbol of the power of a Republic. The Founding Fathers wanted a strong Republic and they looked to this ancient model. I am proud of our heritage. Mussolini was looking back at his nation's ancient history and he used it as a rallying point for really demoralized, downtrodden people, Hitler did the same thing, as both were Fascists. It is only their perversion of the symbols they appropriated that is wrong, not the ancient symbols themselves. Beck clearly has no understanding of what the different groups stood for, he just knows they were bad, so he lumps them all together and tars the Liberals he doesn't like with these wrong ideas.

isn't this an image of Mars returning triumphant from battle? I've seen it many times on dec arts during the Federal era...right after the Revolution artists were using the motif to suggest the grand optimism of America at the time.

The image is used on the fireplace surrounds of the George Read House in New Castle, Delaware...built in 1801.
