I wonder if there will be a count of how many skipped school today? I'm just curious about just how many idiots the right created today...

I think the local police should round up the parents who made their kids truant (for no good reason), and you know, throw the book at them.

I can understand why the right would be up in arms against any kind of forced indoctrination, I mean, look at all the outrage they exhibited when this happened to school kids?

Oops, sorry, looks like it was the right doing it. Never mind...

I'm kind of conflicted on that story a little bit.

Here's why. It was not mandatory (but as anyone who has ever played sports before, when the coach says it's "not" mandatory, that pretty much means that it is).

The school wasn't involved (except for the use of the bus).

And they did pay for their own gas costs.

So, on the one hand, it is a thing about coaches having great sway over their student athletes, enough so that, maybe, some of the players thought voluntary meant mandatory, and that they had no choice really.

It's just weird to me though. Team building in church? I'm sure they were more lured in by the free steak dinner than the church part.

If a parent keeps their child home from school, it is not a truency, it is the parent's right. Looks like you don't want that type of parental control. Is that the type of control you would prefer the school board exercizes? Or maybe Obama? Hmmmmmmmm.

                Actually, it is:

Truancy is any intentional unauthorized absence from compulsory schooling. The term typically describes absences caused by students of their own free will, and usually does not refer to legitimate "excused" absences, such as ones related to medical conditions. ...

Parents of course can control what their kids do, but there are also laws to protect the children, such as truancy laws, child abuse laws, and things like that.

Are you trying to say that parents can do with their kids whatever they want to do? Becausse, they can't.

And it's not the school board exercising that "control", it's the law.

In the case of education, parents can, indeed, do what they want as long as the child can perform at the level ascribed by the school board. That is exactly what this is all about. Truency exists when a child is absent from school w/out parental permission. There can be many reasons but medical is only one.

Little Johnny had to miss school yesterday because I don't trust our president talking to our kids. ALso, he's black, and I can't allow my Johnny to be exposed to that.

                    Hypothetical here.

So if a parent keeps a kid home due to a parent's disagreement with the government's directions, even if the kid wants to go to school to learn or hang with friends or listen to the President, THAT isn't indoctrination?

another reason is because you buy into this indoctrination crap. and don't like who is president and as a sign of your complete disrespect for the president you keep your kids home from school to ensure they don't hear a speech about staying in school and getting educated.

                    nice. keep digging your hole.

The word is TRUANCY and you are incorrect. A child can be considered a "truant" even when the child has permission from a parent to be absent from school. Children can be taken away from parents who consistently remove children from school or allow them to stay home.

it would be one thing to keep your kids home from school for a good reason. say death in the family.

but to keep them out of school because you bought into some bull crap about indoctrination is just plain crazy.

especially since the entire text was released on what he would say.

wow i bet that was some indoctrination.

its not about government control. its about respect for the office that barack obama currently resides in.

which you obviously have no respect for the man, and especially for the office because of the man that sits in it. well done.

In Texas, skipping school is called a "status offense," and after a certain number of truancies, a minor can be sent for supervision to the Juvenile Probation Department. If the minor continues to skip school, he/she can be put on probation. If they continue to skip school, he/she can be sent to a detention facility.

Guess Texas is one of those gosh-darned socialist states.

That's cute, Harley. Stacks of evidence show that properly home schooled individuals are far more intelligent than public school drones. Our public schools have rendered the U.S. 28th in the world!!! But then reading, writing and arithmatic aren't why many parents send their kids to public school. There's a huge drop-out rate among inner city black youths but Obama doesn't address that. It takes Bill Cosby to point it out to black leaders who, in turn, ignore the statistics in favor of the 'victimized black student'.I home schooled my daughter from age 12 and she is far more intelligent than all of her friends who 'graduated' public school.

are you nuts. you just said that what was sooooo offensive about the speech was who was giving it.

and as for juvenile insults what was this?

"I gotta hunch you didn't graduate, recieve public assistance and live with your 'uncle' at budget suites. Hey princiepoo, the people's court is on!"

                yeah that was real mature.

If only the President had given a speech like today to our class, we would have made something of ourselves. Maybe we wouldn't have gotten drafted, served our country, gone to 'Nam, saved the world from the Red Menace so that puppies like you would someday be proud of being racist ingrates., who sit around and do nothing but complain...

P.S. My uncle owns a few hotels, grew up in poverty, his mother collected welfare checks before getting two(2) jobs so that he could go to college(that is education past the 5th, way past the 5th grade).
Graduate, the government paid for my education upon my safe return from protecting your butt. I guess that is public assistance..and thank for berating everyone who earned the right to use GI Bill.

I only have one question my fine Piddling friend, what channel is People's Court on??

Why? Because he looks more like his father than his mother? Because he has a "funny" name?

Get over it. People like you make me sick. I was not an Obama supporter, but the nonsense that you parrot from your heroes on Fox and hate talk radio makes me support him more and more every day.

"We Have Got To Destroy That Black President"
That is the rallying cry of every Right-Wing Resident.
Turning the First Black President into a Sub-Human is their Ultimate Goal.
It certainly helps to have Conservative Congressman & Senators in their Neo-Conservative Foal.

      Speak truth to power.

Never you mind Rush that the speech that you're now condemning, just a few minutes before you were saying it was 100% conservative. So which is it? Bad? Good? Or you just feel like hearing yourself talk?

Since the speech really did not change much since the fake outrage of a few right-wing lunatics created this idiocy...

How many of the duped parents feel like total fools now?

Good god... just how stupid does one have to be to have kept their children home today?

      Pathetic!

Really stoopid actually. I've said this before over the last few days, but the other day, I heard a woman talking about no matter what was in the speech, she knew, just KNEW that Obama was going to put subliminal messages in the speech to warp her children's minds towards liberalism, and his socialist ways (never you mind that Obama is about as centrist as Clinton was, and not even close to being a socialist).

None of the parents feel like total fools right now.

Because guys like Rush and Beck will claim the speech was changed. They will make up things that were never in the speech and say that they were and that the only reason they were taken out was because of all the parents who kept their kids out. The WH then realizes the indoctrination wouldnt work so they changed the speech, but it was too late the American Parent had spoken.

So sadly these poor folls who just turned their kids into poor fools will instead believe they are patriots not fools.

At the school I work at approx. 30 students parents opted them out of participating They sat quietly in library and read/did homework.
If I would of have in charge of babysitting them I would have made them write a copy of the constitution.

I believe that any parent who subjects their kids to listening to the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean hannity, Mark Levin, etc should be charged with child abuse, and the children should be taken from them and placed in a better environment for their own good.

I don't know exactly what the President said to the kids today, but I've heard reports that after the speech, at recess, schoolchildren all over the nation were observed goose-stepping, and marching under placards which showed the President's picture... see, Fox was right, if anybody knows about the opportunity and means (and even motives) of political indoctrination of simple little minds, it's Fox News Channel.

Also I heard that the Republican response that was broadcast to those children immediately after the President spoke to them, it reminded those young students that the benefits of school and education were vastly over-rated, and that family wealth and political connections (and bribery too) were far better and surer means of success in life, than sweating it out in school, getting all that book learning.

When I was a kid in elementary school, a fellow classmate during recess one day began running around and screaming, hands waving in the air. "They're falling! Help! They're falling!" Over and over again. I went over to ask him what that was about, and he paused to catch his breath. Then he said, "I'm a Cambodian, and I'm dodging bombs from Mr. Nixon!" and he took off again, running around and yelling.

The point? Most of our behavior is learned at home, not in school. A twenty minute speech by the President may have some tiny impact, but it will leave most students completely unfazed. My own son came home, and all he had to say about it from the depths of his own kindergarten experience was, "The President talked to us at school today!"

It was, is, and ever shall be a nonstory for nonthinking dunderheads. That Rush Limbaugh is their pied piper just makes it that much less important.
