Media Matters for America obtained the following statement from ACORN:

ACORN Attack Videographer Caught in Manipulation

(San Bernardino, CA) -- Today the videographer James O'Keefe's hidden camera "interview" with San Bernardino ACORN organizer Tresa Kaelke, airing repeatedly on Fox "News", including the Glenn Beck show, and on BigGovernment.com, has been caught out in an obvious set of lies and manipulations.

Ms. Kaelke, who was approached by the actors at the entrance to the small, one-person ACORN office, immediately felt uneasy and at a loss. With their provocative costuming and outlandish scenario, she could not take them seriously. So she met their outrageousness with her own personal style of outrageousness. She matched their false scenario with her own false scenarios.

"They were not believable", said Ms. Kaelke of the two actors. "Somewhat entertaining, but they weren't even good actors. I didn't know what to make of them. They were clearly playing with me. I decided to shock them as much as they were shocking me. Like Stephan Colbert does - saying the most outrageous things with a straight face." While her sense of humor might not be funny to many people, the fact is that she spun false scenario after false scenario and the videographer ate them up.

For example, in response to the set-up by the filmmakers in which they say they are trying get the young woman away from her abusive pimp, she responds that she was abused by her former husband as well (true) and that she shot and killed him (false). He is very much alive and living near Barstow, CA.

However, this is taken as the gospel truth, not just in the film itself, but also by several "news" personalities, indicating that no journalistic standards were applied to making the video or vetting it for broadcast.

Further, as the actors repeatedly noted how nice she was being, Ms Kaelke responded, also repeatedly, that her "niceness" was just her, not ACORN.  "My supervisor would shoot this down like faster than a bat out of hell."

When the actors talked about bringing 12-13 year olds in from another country, supposedly because they needed a lot of money fast for a political campaign, Ms. Kaelke said, "You are going to need it for a lawyer!"

These exchanges, which do not appear in the edited film put on BigGovernment.com, call into question the journalistic standards of the film and of any purported news organization that chooses to run them.

Ms. Kaelke, who did not know she was being filmed, is appalled that her defensive attempts to deal with an intimidating and troubling experience have been manipulated into an attack on her work helping low- and moderate-income families fight the foreclosure crisis, work for needed health care reform, and face the economic crisis in San Bernardino.                 Ms. Kaelke is preparing a sworn affidavit to support her statement.  ACORN challenges Fox to show the complete, unedited versions of all of these inflammatory videos and allow the American people see the "truth", the "whole truth".

What do yo mean theater? This ACORN community activist group is a complete fraud and shame. You should outraged that it is YOUR tax money they are using, but since your so rich and have plenty of money to spare why don't you pay off the debt and fully fund health care??

Since most of the debt was racked up under republicans y'all can pay for it. But I'll gladly pay for healthcare if you take over all the military spending and the war on drugs. Deal?

Fine. Dump ACORN. Put Ayn Rand in schools! My tax dollars also are paying for 4000+ dead kids in Iraq and counting. Please dump that gazillion dollar bill too. I'm just asking if this is real or not? I have seen this video all over the net - what gives? Come on, would she hold up in court? I'd bet a meth lab that says no.

It won't stand up, in fact the filmers might be charged for illegal activity. The leader of the group has tried similar things in the past with planned parenthood and a few other organizations.

Wow you are ignorant. Capitalism works when it isn't being manipulated by government and government works when it isn't being manipulated by business. There is a method to all this madness. If you can't see that gov't and private enterprise should be completely separate then you need to read some history books. This never works, free markets will prosper when not crushed by the hand of gov't and vice versa. Yikes...

Even Adam Smith, beloved by the Chicago School, disagrees with you. Oh wait, "The Wealth of Nations" isn't a history book, so you wouldn't know about it. You might want to read outside of history to understand economics and what happens when governments fail to control the power of large institutions, monopolies, etc.

Hmm. Seat belts, toxic chemicals (red dye and cyclamates anyone?), Triangle Shirt Factory Safety Standards. Terrible Government regulations. Perhaps you don't remember when kids could buy cigarettes and people smoked on planes. Health issues need to have oversight. Regulations are hugely important. Greed doesn't always think of the consequences.

No you should be outraged that you allowed yourself to believe the hucksters at fox news.

Its sad to read in the newspapers about people struggling against their propandizing government, and then realize that there are so many in this country who live in a free society but desparately need propaganda.

Jmille, there was a link on the MMFA homepage to a youtube video, I think it was titled "Brought to you by Fox news". It was a compilation of teabaggers, all saying that they listened only to Fox, while slamming every other network.

The best comment below the video was from a wingnut telling the "leftists" that they just didn't understand that Americans had the freedom to expose themselves to a wide variety of news sources, and if they didn't like that freedom and variety of choices, they should try (a list of evil countries).

            Directly below
a video showing that most right wing nuts choose to listen to only one, very biased, proven unreliable, source.

            It was incredible.

      Weird.
Weird that Fox would somehow suggest the ramblings of one woman proves anything about ACORN. That'd be like me suggesting that all California state representatives are having multiple affairs just because one is. And just as weird is that the woman would say such silly things to complete strangers.

Actually, it is the controversy stirred up by Beck and the other idiots at Fox which precipitated the decision of both the Senate and the Census Bureau. Because of the utter BS that has been shoveled constantly at Fox about the EVILS OF ACORN, the group is no longer effective. ACORN, itself, has never been found guilty of any criminal behavior. It is a large group with a lot of employees. Some of those employees have been caught doing things that they shouldn't be doing . . . those employees were fired.

Unless someone can show that ACORN requested, endorsed and/or approved the activities these idiots have been involved in, the theory of respondeat superior cannot be supported.

Grow up and use your brain. Just believing the BS you've heard on Fox doesn't make you intelligent, you know. Actually, makes you look kind of stupid.

This is troubling that they appear to have not verified this particular video before airing it. Beck is usually more careful with what he chooses to air. If the ACORN employee turns out to have been joking it will be interesting to see if Beck makes an on-air correction.

Recall that Beck said on air that he couldn't disprove the rumors of FEMA camps... before he did a little bit of research and discovered that, yes, he could disprove them. Given a choice between an accurate story and a sensational story, why in the world would Beck choose the former? He has no journalistic reputation or credibility to lose, and he's learned that FNC won't fire him for outrageous antics and incendiary speech.

Even Sean Hannity was saying that they should be sure that what she was saying about her ex-husband should be verified. Even a clown like Hannity has more sense than these idiots. They apparently didn't realize that maybe they should verify the information first, or at least hold back the part with the woman talking about the fictional murder of her ex-husband. If Sean Hannity has more sense than you, its time to just get off the stage.

Also, was it just me, or did Beck seem kind of beat tonight? There is really no good way he can spin this when all the talk is about how badly Fox was duped. Even other shows on Fox are starting to subtly mock Beck.

I see "daytime TV talk show host" in Glenn Beck's future. Jerry Springer style. Hooorah!

Anybody with a working brain who watches about 5 minutes of this video can tell that the woman is just acting along here. Then again, we're talking about the FOX "NEWS" CHANNEL audience, so the requirement of a fully functioning brain is quite unrealistic here. The press release clearly said that this woman was just playing along, and that her ex-husband is STILL ALIVE and living in California somewhere. These two idiots had the tables turned on them and were beaten at their own game, and they're too stupid to realize it. Sadly, Beck's neanderthal audience is too stupid to realize it as well, and he'll continue to play them for the fools they are and laugh at them behind their backs.

      THANK YOU.

Not sure if this will get me banned here or not, but I am so sick and tired of this right wing crap.

The bottom line in almost all these attacks, is the right wing is trying to stir up fear, with the underlying theme is "blackie" is coming to get me.

No matter what issue the right wing crackpots latch on to, there is always a minority involved, whether it be an African American, gay, or anyone else that isn't what they believe a true blue American should be.

There I said it out loud.

The young gotcha filmmakers were playing an extreme game and they got played, too. The point can be made that this woman was in her office alone with them. If they are going to come in and lie like a rug, why shouldn't she lie right back. After all, if someone is crazy enough to pull this garbage on her, they could hurt her if she called them out on it. Think about this. And Jamie's claim that it only cost him $1300 to make this is a lie. How did he get from San Bernardino to Balitmore?

Assuming that Ms. Kaelke is telling the truth (a big assumption), she's not the brightest bulb. If you were in a situation like this, would you play along too? Or would you throw the "attackers" out? Anyone with half a brain would realize that she's trying to cover up - and she's not even a good liar. Her reasoning sounds akin to an excuse a seven year old would make.
