The notion that "independents" watch Fox is sloppy journalism on the part of progressive outlets. Conservative media creates a myth of the "lone ranger" - the non-partisan everyman that "calls them as they see them." For example, Bortz, Savage, Beck, O'Reily, and the rest all claim to be "independents" of one stripe or another. Believing these characters to be anything other than mouth pieces for conservative (far right) ideals is laughable if it wasn't such an effective strategy. Now, when Fox interviews a conservative, Republican-only voter, pundit, etc - the interviewee is able to say, with a straight face, " I am an independent" and "Fox gives me an outlet." If journalist, of which I am one, actually did our jobs, we would call people out on these rhetorical manipulations.

"Taking direct aim"...hmmm I wonder how that would be taken had Fox uttered that?
