I'd say Michael Savage's "Send the Commies Back to the Ghetto!" Presidential campaign is off to a shaky start, given that he's not even a credible source for a kid's school paper.

This from a guy with a degree in Medicinal Botany.

What? Did he pick some flowers, smoke a joint and then get a degree from it?

I won't allow that sort of libelous garbage to go unchecked on this website. His PhD is in Nutritional Ethnomedicine.

(Seriously. And I challenge anyone to name another human being with a PhD in Nutritional Ethnomedicine.)

          LOL. Sorry. My mistake.

It's still herbs and flowers and sh!t, and it don't make you an MD anymore that going to the movies makes you an actor.

No need to apologize. It's just that I cringe on behalf of people who actually worked for and earned PhDs in medical anthropology and related fields when I hear Savage and his defenders trot out his supposed doctoral credentials. (I'm similarly annoyed by Laura Schlessinger's attempts to pass of her doctorate in physiology as a doctorate in psychology or psychiatry.)

Well, from that POV, then my apology IS necessary: To all those who actually worked for and earned PhDs in Medical Anthropology, Nutritional Ethnomedicine and related fields!

100% in agreement with you on both Savage and Slessinger (*shudder*) though! (Probably the only reason I don't hate her more is that I haven't heard her in a while.)

Maybe someday these clowns will realize that a degree alone doesn't make crackpot ideas credible. The ideas THEMSELVES still have to withstand scrutiny.

Your apology is, I'm sure, appreciated by those with doctorates in such fields, but I should reiterate that "Nutritional Ethnomedicine" is a field in which only one person holds a PhD: Michael Weiner / Savage. Medical Anthropology is a very well defined scholarly field, but I assure you that you need not apologize to other Nutritional Ethnomedical Doctors any more than you need to apologize to other Carnivorous Unicorns.

I never thought I would ever do anything that resembled a defense of Michael Savage (Please understand that I despise the man), but his credentials are legitimate, whatever you think of the field.

He holds 2 Master's Degrees from the University of Hawaii:
              MS in medical botany
              MA in medical anthropology

His PhD is in Nutritional Ethnomedicine. (This field doesn't have it's own department, but I'm assuming the degree was given the name based on his thesis; it was most likely done in the Department that handles medical anthropology).
And sad to say it, but it's not a Crackerjack box degree. It's from UC Berkeley.

Please let me reiterate how much I despise this man.

No need to apologize. The man has indeed earned master's degrees in actual fields. This in no way takes away from the fact that his PhD is in a field that he invented for himself so that he could graduate from Berkeley with a PhD in a field that doesn't actually exist and qualifies him for nothing. Berkeley did nothing wrong by accepting Weiner's money and time in exchange for a degree in a non-existent field.

My point is that, to my knowledge and in my experience, schools like Berkeley don't do what you claim. They don't just act like diploma mills.

The entrance credentials into any PhD program are rigorous, and while the the title of his degree may be nebulous, it was most likely rewarded under the auspices of one of the existing departments that you HAVE heard of (perhaps medical anthropology or something similar) and that allowed him to pursue a more interdisciplinary degree.

                  Again, I hate him.

Mike, you're starting to turn into Orly Taitz, both in everyday craziness and sheer legal lunacy.

Your Ph.D. is in nutritional ethnomedicine. What are you going to do, pour Rockstar down her throat until she gives up? You're no expert in Women's Studies!

Um, what was the paper about? You know, the paper that Savage wasn't a viable source for?
Cause lets say, its about astrology, how could he sue anyone for saying, he isn't a credible source on, my example, astrology?

Actually, regardless, how can he sue anyone over it?

Savage is just an angry man, dunno at what exactly, but in other countries, he'd be at a counter in a pub, bein shunned and only gettin to say his views to an unfortunate person stuck beside him.

And another thing, just though about Savage being banned from England, if he went there and got on air sayin this stuff, he'd be told to be more civil, Rush, Beck and Savage, Dobbs even, some will call them only provocative and others will say worse stuff about them, but really, there main problem is their unprofessional and lack manners. Still not certain if its deliberate though.
