They've been pushing this nonsense for a while. They're all very concerned about the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Obama repealed them both, because he hates America.

But when the Bush government spied on Americans, and threw people in prison for years without charge or counsel (including at least one American citizen arrested on American soil), it was the opposition who were unpatriotic, who were in league with those who would destroy our nation...

I think you're proving that such actions are justified if you agree with the political/social ideology that motivates them. You could also agree with both sides and just be calling out their hypocrisy though.

OK, I'll clarify. I am mocking Levin and company, clearly. Obama has done absolutely nothing to justify claims that he is violating the constitution in any way.

But when Bush was clearly abbrogating basic tenets of constitutional law, not to mention our treaty obligations, that was just fine in the eyes of those who claim to be so concerned with the constitutionality of Obama's actions, but those who would protest Bush's abuse of our founding document were called traitors.

          Is irony dead?

Couldn't they both say they were doing what they were in the spirit of the general welfare clause? Because public option healthcare is not a power granted to the federal gov in the Constitution.

The public option fits into the general welfare clause just as neatly as any other government program. You can't fit warrantless wiretapping, secret military detainment, kidnapping and torture into the general welfare clause, as they are all specifically barred by the text of the constitution.

And again, you're really straining to find false equivalencies between Bush and Obama, and between the opposition to each.

Bush disregarded the constitution at every turn, in favor of dictator-like executive power grabs, particularly in the areas of search and seizure and detainment policy. Normally, you would have expected conservatives to howl over such an expansion of unchecked government power. Instead, they are now howling nonsensically at Obama's truly moderate-to-liberal policy positions, and using a never-ending slew of falsehoods and smears in an attempt to derail them.

Taken together, these developments are proof positive that what we've seen in recent times is the destruction of the conservative philosophy, and the rise of a virulent and destructive political force that is conservative in name only.

Allow me to elaborate further: when Bush was first elected, before 9/11 happened and we got into the debate about constitutional liberties vs. government power in fighting terrorism, there was honest political disagreement between the new president and his opponents. Bush was pushing for about $1 trillion in tax cuts, most of which would go to the wealthy. That is politically anathema to Democrats and liberals. We argued, but in the end, we lost out to the new president on his signature issue. There was talk of the damage this would do to the federal budget, but the president got what he wanted, with the press largely going along for the ride.

Contrast that to today's situation. Granted, the situation is perilous, and the politics of the moment are heated, perhaps even moreso than following the debacle that was the 2000 election. However, the stark difference in the rhetoric of the opposition is too much to ignore, or to write off as exactly what liberals would do if they were in the opposition. What the right has done is to construct a parallel universe in which universal health care is Naziism, Obama is either Hitler, Mao, or Stalin, and the United States has been sold off to the UN, all so Obama could get the Nobel Peace Prize, or something.

The biggest reason why the right wing in this country has been successful at creating this photonegative of reality is because Americans have been conditioned, especially in the media, to equate all partisan politics as equal. "Well, the Democrats and Republicans all do the same thing." It's mind-numbing at this point, the difference is so obvious. It's especially mind-numbing to see commenters on this site perpetuating false equivalencies in the face of so much evidence to the contrary.

Levin smears Obama as "the leader of a counter-revolution to the American revolution"

      For once, Levin's right.

Obama is leading a counter-revolution to the "revolution" that believes an American president can pursue a foreign policy that insults the world at large and can unilaterally attack other nations at will.

Obama is leading a counter-revolution to the "revolution" that thinks the US president can pick and choose what laws to enforce through the use of "signing statements."

Obama is leading a counter-revolution to the "revolution" that believes that a president can start simultaneous wars of choice costing $12 BILLION/month, fund them with tax cuts for the rich, and think this will not adversely effect the economy.

Obama is leading a counter-revolution to the "revolution" that believes a president's power is unlimited, to the point where that president can wiretap his own citizens without warrants, suspend the writ of habeas corpus, extraordinarily render and torture others, and out a covert CIA agent as a means of political retaliation.

Levin's right: there is a "counter-revolution" -- and that "revolution day" was this past November 4, 2008.
