October 28, 2009 10:13 am ET

On the October 28 edition of Fox & Friends, co-host Gretchen Carlson managed to link Andre Agassi's reported admission he used crystal meth to a story on subsidies for Amtrak:

I'm so disgusted by this I'm having a hard time getting my thoughts together.

Gretchen, have you lost any friends to addictive drugs? I mean, any addictive drugs, including alcohol and tobacoo? Have you first hand experience of the kind of destruction they can weave through not just the user's life, but the lives of all of those who care for and about them? Have you no soul? At long last, Gretchen, have you no soul at all?

It sounds like she also said, "sum-sidizes" at about the 50 second mark. I guess pronunciation is the least of their worries.

Government programs like the DMV? Damn...car registration and licenses are hurting my freedoms...

We are the most technologically advanced country with the worst train system... we should be embarassed that Japan and Europe have high speed rail and we have the same basic trains that were used 100 years ago.

Current trains have been tested at over 300MPH, but typically run between 160 to 180 MPH when used as passenger transportation.

Japan has 1525 miles of high speed rail
Germany has 800 miles of high speed rail
China has 3,730 miles and they run at up to 260 MPH
      Turkey has 150 miles.... Turkey!!
      United States 0 miles

We are a nation addicted to air travel, which hasn't been a good thing for us as a nation with the high cost of fuel and security.

Gee, would what it have been like after 9/11 if we had a network of high speed trains that could travel from LA to New York in 10 hours by train... I know, maybe I'm sentimental, Amtrak is a failed government program because we don't invest enough in it.

We should be embarassed that we let the airlines dictate the transportation system in this country...

The real problem we have is the distances involved. Juat trying to get rights-of-way for train tracks capable of handling the high-speed trains from LA to NY is prohibitive now. Japan and Europe can do well with train travel because the countries involved are magnitudes of scale smaller than the US. Also, the rail lines now are used primarily for freight, and having high-speed passenger trains on the same rails would involve having to divert freight off the main lines or diverting the passenger trains around freight trains, which slows down both.

I love train travel, but I travel by train mostly in the east and northeast, where cities are relatively closer together, and the train from DC to NY is almost as efficient as flying when you take into account having to arrive at the airport early, getting from the airport to downtown when the train already arrives downtown, etc.

Point taken; but it seems to me that our transportation system would be much more rational, efficient, economical and eco-friendly if "commuter hops" were done by train. As you say, NY to DC, Boston or Philadelphia is actually quicker by rail than by air.

I totally agree with your statements... it just seems that this country has never been serious about improving it's rail system and the conversation was never more opportune than after 9/11.

I guess my point is that Fox once again just likes to point out every government expenditure like it's outrageous...

Does Fox mention how much government subsidies airports get?
In the last 5 years ... the FAA funded 3,139 low priority airport projects (from 18,771 requested) for $2 billion, 30% came in the form of discretionary spending and 65% in entitlement funding and only 5% in stimulus funding.

Anyhow, my point is that Fox tries to make Amtrak look evil and wasteful, but it's really treated the same as all transportation in this country.

Between 2005 - 2009, Ted Stevens Anchorage Int'l received $175 million in federal money ($2 million in stimulus funding) and that airpor averages 2.5 million flights/year, which averages out to $17/per plane trip!!!

In fact, if you take out this year's stimulus money and simply go by 2005-2008... that's $173 million over 4 years, that's $27/per flight... that's almost as much as Amtrak is wasting! We should shut down Anchorage airport if they can't support themselves!

Fair and balanced as always Fox!

As far as the Agassi story... it's nice to see that Fox doesn't even report the fact that when Agassi was on Meth he had dropped to 149th in the world ranking and his career looked to be over.

It was his focus on getting his life in order and restarting his career that brought him back to the top... just in case anyone thought Meth was a performance enhancing drug... it's not.

i am surprised they didn't invoke a "casey jones" reference to amtrak operators crashing trains due to "allegedly" being high on the job, i would give fox producers a D- for missing that softball

getting back to fundamentals, wasn't the reason the government took over the passenger RRs was because the private sector could not make a profit competing against the airlines.

AND The government acknowledged the need for passenger service in certain areas of the country The Northeast primarily.

Now the government is sponsoring research on 6 High Speed Rail routes. One, believe or not, would link Denver to El Paso.

If it was privately financed it would have to be with Jaurez drug money....lol

Germany conquered and occupied most of Europe and Northern Africa during the Second World War. Millions of Jews and other minorities were persecuted and killed, particularly during the Second World War, amidst the Holocaust.
And in other news Gretchen is a German name.

Her segway was just about that bad and makes just about as much sense. Unfortunatley, that's typical for Faux News.

Unbelievable. Crystal meth to Amtrack as if the two are connected, and as if the right wing has EVER had a problem with business subsidies. We've been subsidizing farms, oil and the rails for DECADES without a sneeze from the conservative bozos. But NOW they are against it.

And it's so to SPEAK, you bimbo! Not SPEECH.
