The "Freedom" to hand your money over to Insurance companies. The "Liberty" to take your child to the emergency room with an ear infection because you can't afford insurance. The "Freedom" to pay far more than people in the rest of the civilized world for care, if you are even lucky enough to be able to afford it. The "liberty" to sell your house to pay for your cancer treatments, if you can't.

Let's all join in a chorus of "Well I'm proud to be an American, , where at least I know I'm free...."

What I would point out, jjamele, is that once the right is finally cornered on just what that "freedom and liberty" is all about, this is probably the tactic they will use--wrap themselves up in the flag and start singing Lee Greenwood or Toby Keith...

Bigger than legalized institutional slavery and the denial of all property and rights to slaves? Really? Huh, well, I guess this really is something over which one should protest vehemently by mailing tea bags to Washington.

Good idea, V. As soon as I finish steeping my chai I'm sending the bag off.

You're so moralistic. I'll bet when you hear "Alamo," you're reminded that one of the freedoms those heroes were fighting for was the freedom to withhold freedom from other humans. Slavery was outlawed by Mexico.

I've never quite understood why anyone should consider the American dead at the Alamo as "heroes," anyway. Is it because they all died? Custer and all of his mean died at Little Big Horn,, too-- I don't see them as heroes, either.

Limbaugh probably means the biggest snatch of freedom and liberty since Medicare, which was the biggest since Brown v. Board of Education, which was the biggest since Social Security, which was the biggest since the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, etc. etc.

"Freedom and Liberty" always means "the right to amass unlimited wealth at the expense of society" to people like him.

Yea, Corporations are not exactly shining beacons of democracy. They are authoritarian and aggressive. They also tend pursue the bottom line regardless of any other consideration of loyalty. Patriotism primarily to the board and the stockholder... It amuses me that the libertarian conservatives are so so worried about various freedoms and yet hold up as a model an authoritarian social organization. Government power is somehow more odious than corporate... i can't remember the last time I voted in an election involving corporate governance. However I do routinely find myself giving coperations money... Some of which goes to buying off politicians...

Completely glossing over the effects of the Patriot Act andits defacto nullification process of the Constitution. The Cheney's were very much in favor of this activity, witnessed by Mr Bush's claim he was "the Decider ". Thank the stars it takes more than 8 years and 61 million voters to dismantle the Constitution.

Who cares what any Republican has to say about healthcare reform? They're cowards. They are too afraid of losing in the "arena of ideas," as Limbaugh loves to say, to put up their own reform bill.

He's absolutely right. Here is Canada where we have "socialized health care" the government intruds on our lives daily. Did you know we can't choose our own doctors or care? The government here decides what we should eat, how much sleep and exercise we need. Now we aren't even allowed to drink and drive! Can you believe it? They even have the nerve to tell us that smoking is dangerous! Absurd!

      Limbaugh:
the biggest snatch of freedom and liberty in U.S. history
QUIZ: What will Chris Wallace's response be?:

      a) Wallace challenges Limbaugh on this statement, saying something like, "Well what about the military draft--something you managed to avoid during the Vietnam War?"

      or

      b) Wallace replies, "All right, now let's move on to another topic."

Personally, I'm going to take a wild guess and say it's "b".

This draconian totalitarian picture rush paints seems to avoid reality. Sure I can imagine a world in which, in the name of perfect health, all freedom is absolved. Actually the best chance for that scenario would be a government dominated by the health insurance industry. In order to placate the stock holding overlords, the insurance industry controlled government would micromanage our lives to avoid unnecessary losses of revenue. Since “we the people” would be left out of such a government, considerations of personal choice and freedom would be overruled by the stockholder-controlled government. They actually could force you to eat your vegetables.

Now back to reality. What the shrill right wants us to forget is that this government controlled healthcare experiment has been actually tried in other countries and we have decades of data. It turns out that European health care systems have not destroyed liberty in the name of government-controlled health care. Not only does life go on, but people still manage to have the freedom to do unhealthy things. In England doctors prescribe heroin to junkies as a treatment. Also I believe more people smoke in parts of Europe than they do here. See rushbo, you still have the freedom to be stupid in a government run health system. You also have universal coverage and lower costs.

This reminds me of the advances in Genetics. We can now determine who is at greater risk of various conditions (e.g. cancer, Alzheimer's, etc.). Insurance companies have been looking at ways to disallow treatment because of these 'pre-existing conditions', though the statistics, and means to avoid having the disorders occur through lifestyle and medical changes, can actually allow a reduced chance for many who could develop the conditions to avoid them.
