She is authentic for a certain group. You know, when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping, that type. I know a lot of people like Sarah. They may be great fun at the town 4th of July Picnic, but that doesn't mean they belong in the White House.

          Yeah -- trailer trash.

Seeing as both Palin and the First Dud are unemployed, and supporting their kids on the public dime the rest of us work hard for, I'd say she qualifies as such . . .

skank biscut works for Carrie Prejean. I don't know much about her marriage, if she can look at her hubby over breakfast and he can look back, it isn't my business. Now, Carrie, that's different. No one makes a sex tape and sends it off without having some skank to them. I firmly believe people can be as naughty as they want to be, but for heaven sakes, never commit it to tape or film! It will come back to bite you.

Does she have a "blue collar, union card-holding husband"? Wait a second, I thought the right hated unions. I am so confused now. The right hates something one day, then likes it the next, and then goes right back to hating it. So does the right actually like the unions now?

Somehow, I don't get how she can say that Palin is an authentic American, but then turn around and say that many members of the media are not. Do we now have illegal immigrants working in media? It's no wonder that Dobbs left CNN. He found illegal immigrants working at CNN and couldn't allow it, so he quit out of principle. It's all coming together now. Oh my God, i just thought about it and maybe Anita Dunn is an illegal immigrant. She worked with the media and the White House forced her to resign, probably because they found out she was Chinese. *Note the sarcasm

I hate to say this, but I happen to agree with Anthrax (oh the pain, the pain!) Sarah Palin is an authentic American of the sort that I grew up with, as I said earlier, my mother would have loved her. I, however, have spent my entire life, beginning in my teens trying to distance myself from this archetype. She may play well in the trailer park, but that doesn't mean she plays well at the University library or the country club. Being the mayor of a small town in a backwoods state does not qualify you to be the President of the United States. She may do a real job of representing a small group, but she fails when it comes to the rest of us. Her problem is that she doesn't see her limitations.

Not to defend Palin but the whole not seeing her limitations thing is at least partly due to people like Bill Kristol, Rush Limbaugh, Coulter, etc. I'm sure her ego just exploded from all the adulation she got after being tapped as McCain's running mate. She's all puffed up from that but probably deep down doesn't think she really deserves it. I think that's why she's so over sensitive to any minor criticism. I was going to equate her to a young, small town athlete who was just awarded a multi-million dollar pro-contract but those people actually have talent. I think a more apt comparison would be Ashley Simpson lip-syncing the wrong song and then storming off the stage on SNL.

Not a bad analogy, and a sports metaphor is really good for her. She is a small town athlete and she is playing in the big leagues. She has been stoked, for sure, but just like the kid from Podunk who is called up to the Majors, she put herself out for this. She wanted the chance to compete. Before she was selected as the running mate, she was already supposed to give three different speeches at the Convention. There were people who were scouting her and selling her onto the coaches. The big problem is that while her fast ball was good in Wasilla, it was too slow for the rest of the pitching staff, and she lost on the national mound.

I hate to refer to her favorably, but Peggy Noonan (in the WSJ hitpiece that sealed her doom with the Republican Party), said that Palin is the inevitable result of the modern self-esteem, positive feedback movement: absolutely no sense of what one is and is not qualified for.

And I think your Ashley Simpson parallel is dead on.

'Cuz I think she's too stupid to be evil incarnate, just like Bush (either one). Evil is a thinking choice, to know what is right and to do the wrong thing, and to convince others to do the wrong thing. Dick Cheney actually knows that what he is doing is wrong, unethical, and immoral, but he wants to do it anyway and he wants to convince others it is what it isn't and to gleefully do what they shouldn't. That is why he is evil and George, who actually got convinced, is just plain stupid. Now, do I believe there are some evil people using her as a tool, yeahuh!

She's authentic for their stereotype but there have always been many different kinds of American. There was a time when Americans at least made an attempt at intellectualism instead of Annie Oakley theatrics. Politicians used to write serious policy books to make their case for higher office.

I understand what you mean, Epkk. I didn't grow up in a trailer park, nor did I attend Ivy League schools. I grew up in a tract home in suburbia. I find Palin too stupid to be a leader, sorry. I'm sure a lot of people that don't believe in Darwin and want prayer in the schools love her, and I understand that the right wing promotes this hatred of ELITES, but I find her an insult to REGULAR people like me. She doesn't understand the concept of pro choice (Against abortion? Don't have one!) and I find her Drill Here Drill Now sort of 19th Century stupid. And if that's genuine Amurrika, well then so was slavery and I want no part of it.

You sound like we have a lot in common. I grew up in tract homes (just blocks from the trailer park) in small towns and I went to a state school. I have been an introvert and an intellectual all my life and it constantly gets me labeled as an elitist. (Which just gets under my decidedly middle class skin!) But like you, I find her an insult to regular people. She might be nice to have as a friend, or co-worker, but that doesn't mean she is right for the White House. My mother never understood how I could be so different from her. She never got my values or how I could find fault with hers. Sarah reminds me a lot of someone my mother would connect with.

Yup, yup. My mom passed away in 1997 but I'll never forget when I found her watching the OJ trial and saying, "Hmm. Maybe he DIDNT DO IT!" Church-going republican forever. But I'm pretty sure she believed in Science, being a teacher...can't say the same for Palin.

My mother, she passed away in 2001, was an interesting person. She could be dead on about something one minute and then beyond the ozone layer on something else! She brought me up watching science shows, but she was also a big believer in whackadoodle pseudo-science. She voted for Kennedy, but also Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Ross Perot. Go figure.

I love how the repubs classify palin's criticism as persecuting her because she is female ignoring their own loooong line of harsh words against Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama and Nancy Pelosi. I dont think people target her because she is female as much as they target her because she is stupid. The actual attacks against the three above are usually personal attacks and not attacks on policy or intelligence or even personal opinions.

Coulter's "authentic American" remarks sound chillingly like the pro-Nazi groups (America First, et al) of the 1930s, which were supported by such authentic Americans as Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford and Father Coughlin. And those "authentic Americans" weren't those Jews running the media, were they?

Coulter, for all her snarky remarks, is playing up to the quiet Jew haters, speaking in the same kind of code language that Limbaugh's Obama "man child" crap does to people who just don't like blacks. Media = Jews; Man child = "boy" (as in "Boy, pick up Mr. Limbaugh's suitcase and shine his shoes.")

      Hmm??? What does authentic mean?

Authenticity- refers to the truthfulness of origins, attributions, commitments, sincerity, devotion, and intentions.

Now that is something! Sarah Palin more truthful then most members of the media! WOW! I'm learning something new by the day! <sarcasm>

        But windyreb90210,

Why all the consternation over someone who has such 'little appeal'. Do you now have the good of the conservative movement in your heartfelt comments?

Go to CBS and see the whole interview. Ms. Coulter states that all Palin has to do is twitter about the death panels and low and behold, congress is caught having to defend another aspect of the monstrosity known as obamacare. Pretty authentic for someone without so little influence that even the high and mighty progressives have to attempt to respond, wouldn't you say? Nah, no appeal there that deserves a response.

If you only would listen to your own words and fellow socialist-progressives here at media matters (for very little) and just let us have some fun as Mrs. Palin destroys the conservative movement. All of your non-interest in her lack of appeal and her 'far rightness' seems to just keep the fire going. Can't we all just get along? According to you guys, her time in the spotlight will be vaporlike anyway, so why all the attention to someone with absolutely no appeal?

        Unless........

The reality is that it's laughable when people like Mann, the Great Gasbag and a child of privilege like Kristol lay claim to knowing anything about authenticity. They live the kind of lives most Americans will never know---rich, isolated from the mainstream, and unlikely to have ever broken a sweat doing a day or hard work.
