I think anyone with a nickname like Terdblossom (sic), should be the last person to comment on ettiquette and protocal. And Karl, the standing of the President and the American people have gone up with the rest of the world since yer gud buddy, Dubya got the hell out of Dodge! Know whut Ah'm a thankin', yer juz pea-green with jealousy! Terdblossom!

The US standing has gone up WHERE? Only with other elite liberal wingnuts.

As noted this oba mao error in etiquette shows the true weakness of the American head of state. BTW the Japanese Emperor is not the Japanese head of state..

Where was the error in etiquette? In Japan, a bow is similar to a handshake, and the fact that the Emperor is not head of state is irrelevent.

Actually, there was a poll taken of Europeans and the results released just a little while ago. You could look it up yourself. Yes, I know the Emperor is not the Head of State nor is he a god anymore. He is however, an older man much respected by his people and his family has ruled Japan for centuries, I do not see it as weak to bow under these circumstances. I've actually driven past the Imperial Palace and seen it from Toyko Tower, have you? And oldman, I am not an elite, just a working stiff in the Civil Service. I am a liberal, have been as far back as I can remember, it was the speeches of JFK and MLK that I read in elementary school that made me one. But, here is a question for you, what is your thought on kissing and hand holding, in the literal sense, that Bush did with the Saudi Princes? American men generally don't kiss and hand hold with other men, if they're straight.

it is protocol to greet the saudi king in such a fashion on their home turf. just as it would be for that sheik to shake hands with president obama if the sheik came here.

and the bow is proper protocol when addressing a foreign head of state in their own homeland. just like the japanese emperor would be required to shake hands with the preisdent.

You make a good point. He just doesn't have any power beyond being a symbol, but he is still a powerful symbol of tradition. I really like the Empress, she was a commoner and the Imperial Palace staff wasn't always nice or kind to her.

You must know that the USA just went from #7 to #1 on the Most Admired Countries List.Take a guess why that is.
Showing respect to other cultures and ethnicities is a positve thing. The critics of a respectful bow act as if they, the USA and the president are too superior to show any respectful gesture like this..it last less than a second..and is over.No one is making policy based on it .It is neutral or maybe an encouragement for mutual respectful behavior!!Do these critics have any idea how it looks to the rest of the world when they criticize the president for just showing respect to another world dignitary!I just don't remember anything like this when Bush kissed and held hands with the Saudi King. That looked more odd or weak(to use ur words)!!!
The same critics went crazy criticizing the 1st Lady for (OMG) touching the (white) queen of England even though it was clear that she violated no protocols since the Queen touched her 1st!!!Sorry but I have to wonder about why the criticism when Arab and Asian Monarchs are shown respectful bows versus European Monarchs!!

There's a word, and it starts with "R." I would have no problem with the President bowing to a foreign King, but a kiss on the mouth is just a little too...., at least for my taste. I was a little surprised the Queen seemed so take with Mrs. Obama. I rather like the old gal, but I've never seen her so down and comfortable with someone before, it says something nice about both her and Mrs. Obama.

Bowing and kneeling are two different things.

I know it may have escaped Mr. Rove's attention, but the world deserved an apology after he and Bush/Cheney tortured people. That was wrong of us, it was a much more profound desecration of the small 'r' republican ideals this country stands for, and, just for fun, if President Obama apologized, I have not seen the video. Or, is it all right to lie about this President, but not all right to point out painful truths about the last one?

Painful truths about the last one... That's right blame Bush, just how long do you think you can continue to point to the past and say "well it's Bush this and Bush that". The United States has declared waterboarding torture and this country has executed those who have tortured our military.

          oldmaninblackforest:

Waterboarding is torture. Has been ever since it was invented. We prosecuted people who used this technique on captured U.S. soldiers. Mancow, a conservative radio host, was so sure it wasn't torture that he underwent it live. After just a few seconds, he had had enough, and, though reluctantly, he admitted that in his opinion it was torture.

I blame Bush because he and Cheney bullied their legal experts to give them some thin pretext to allow them to torture people. I blame them because they are responsible for this black mark on America. They are responsible for trashing the Constitution for fun and profit. Move on? Perhaps, after we have cleaned up the enormous mess those two hoodlums and those who worked for them left for us, and after all of them have been tried, convicted, and locked up. Perhaps then we can all move on.

You clearly know little about the SEIU, except what the liars at FOX Propaganda tell you to think. They are a union, true enough, and they work as a very large and effective group to ensure adequate pay and decent benefits to, among others, janitors and security personnel. They are hard working Americans, who just want a fair wage for an honest day's work. I can understand how, by voting Democratic and refusing to bow and scrape to their corporate masters, you might misperceive them as 'freaks of nature', but, that doesn't mean you're right, does it?

Bush was the worst president of the last 100 years. Ask anyone who still lives in New Orleans, in a trailer. Ask anyone who lost money in the Madhoff scheme. Ask anyone who lost their pension to Enron. Ask anyone who had a family member electrocuted in a faulty shower built by Halliburton. Ask almost anyone in this country who is not a millionaire, and you will find that they are mostly better off under just eight months of Obama than they were under eight years of Bush.

If you want pathetic, look in the mirror.

Rush Limbaugh expresses contempt for American troops on a regular basis, but I didn't know it extended to other wars for the chickenhawk right. You learn something new and depressing every day.

ummm waterboarding IS torture. there are numerous treaties saying as such that we have signed on to declaring that very thing. the japanese government in world war ii, a number of them were hanged because they allowed waterboarding to occur.

president theodore roosevelt sacked his general in the philipines, Gen. Miles, when it was discovered that said general had allowed waterboarding to occur.

You are exactly right!!!I worked for a Japanese owned company for many years and the usual greeting was a bow while extending a business card.Hand shaking was only done when Americans (by habit or lack of knowledge ) extended their hands. It would be awkward to see because they didn't expect it at all.Later on it was a bit more common for the bow and a handshake. The Japanes always bowed 1st.
We show both ignorance and arrogance to criticize the President this way. When GW Bush at an Int'l gathering of world leaders was speakig thru an open mike using cuss words, mouth open, spitting food it was truly an embarrassment to see.Right wingers said .."don't be naive that's the way the big boys talk in private".Bush calling people A-holes and Cheny telling a US Senator to go F*** himself was somehow no big deal for these same conservatives that criticize everyting Obama!!!

Faxed talking points are stale - it was yesterday's talking points that Obama messed up by bowing AND shaking the hand.

That's ridiculous. The Emperor extended his hand.

Obama tried to do what the Emperor's country would expect. The Emperor did what Obama's nation would expect for a greeting. They ended up doing both because the Emperor stuck out his hand.

So, if in Japan one never shakes hands while someone is bowing to you, why did the Emperor stick out his hand?

That talking point was debunked yesterday, since it doesn't make sense to blame Obama for violating Japanese protocol when it was the Emperor who stuck his hand out!!! You need to go back and berate whoever it was who sent you yesterday's talking points this morning, dum-dum.

Bush has that position on ice; frankly, no one else can compare right now. The previous bottom-dwellers were Grant, Harding, and Nixon (notice a party pattern?). Carter tends to settle around the middle somewhere; not great, but not a failure, either. It's too early to judge Obama, since he has more than seven years to go.

Here's a man that should be in jail (Karl Rove), yet he is given a platform to attack and criticize the President of the United States with this ridiculous notion of an "apology tour". These same people ignore the damage their leader (Bush) did to hurt America's standing around the world. Hell, THEY should be apologizing to the American people for the disasterous eight years they had power.
In former President Bush's new book, and his speaking engagements he acknowledges making some "mistakes" and he accept some blame for the current state of affairs, but no where do you see or hear Bush apologize to the America people.
Another American President, criminal Richard M. Nixon never apologized for his crimes.
Something is seriously wrong when a man can acknowledge wrong, but can't apologize for it.

"OMG", You sound like that idiot from Fox News... what's his name? Oh, I got it!!; Sean Hannity.
He will say anything, repeat any lie and tell people to accept it as truth. I am tried of going over the many successes Obama achieved during his short run as President, but I can assure you Bush did not give a damn about YOU or the American people during his term as President.

Let's think about this for a minute - Rush pushing Palins book, Palin going on tour, Beck & O'Riely going tour, McCain wanting AARP members to cut up their cards, the 2 million plus Tea Party, the Chamber of Commerce paying lobby groups to produce fictitious studies on health care, 40 plus house of representative members offering testimony for the record that was identical (supplied courtesy of the health insurance industry), the Catholic Bishops pressuring congressional members, Texas threatening to Secede from the Union, the Republican Party discriminating against members of their own party with moderate points of view, Liz Cheney announcing her father is going to run in 2012, etc., etc.

Yup, looks like Rove is up to his old tricks again!!!

Rush pushing Palins book - so what? Beck and O'Reilly going on tour - So What?? McCain wanting AARP members to cut their cards up (and we did) What would you do if an organization that you belonged to stabbed you in the back, why continue to support an organization that DOES NOT represent me, and most other members for that matter.

What about the fake reports and studies the "LIBS" are producing? I have more faith in the chamber of commerce than the likes of barney franks, chris dodd and the other institutionalized crooks.

"Republican Party discrimination against members of their own party with moderate views" Hmmm what about Joe Lieberman? Now THAT'S discrimination of someone with MODERATE views. The woman in NY was by no means a moderate, pro-abortion, pro-oba maocare, pro-cr*p&trade? hmm real moderate.

It would be great if Cheney runs in 2012... maybe we can get back to reality...

What reality? The twisted reality that is Dick Cheney's brain?

How can you support that man? He is the terrorists' best friend. See terrorism only works if the targets give them what they want. Under the Bush/Cheney regime, Americans were taught to be fearful and to allow the government to take away basic Constitutional rights. The terrorists didn't have to ever attack us again . . . destruction of our way of life was their goal . . . . they almost won under Bush/Cheney.

Yes, and I asked the Japanese exchange student that I hosted shortly after that what Japan had felt and she said they were worried about the President, not insulted. She was a very sweet young lady. Frankly, I was mortified, and imagine that Mr. Bush was, too. At least the Japanese were understanging.

Having lived in Japan for two years, I did find Obama's bow a little much. Just a head nod or slight bend is what we (and the Japanese) did. Then again, I never met the emperor.

Let's just hope our president doesn't have to meet King Bhumibol of Thailand. When I met the crown prince I had to be on my knees with my nose touching the floor because of lèse majesté. This law is often used by Thailand's government to imprison political rivals and journalists, even foreign correspondents, who they accuse of "insulting" the royal family.

The irony of this is that King Bhumibol was born in Cambridge, MA while his father was attending Harvard. Bhumidol was then educated in Switzerland. He should know better than to allow this lèse majesté stuff to go on in a country that is the economic jewel of southeast Asia.

Well, thank God for Fox...letting us know what Karl Rove thinks of President Obama, because - you know - every time the President does or says something, I always wonder with great curiosity, "Gee...what must Karl Rove thinks about this."

Is there anyone more predictable in the country?
