it is over the past number of years there have been some changes away from what people perceive to be the intolerance of a lot of religious organizations. it's very difficult to call even mainstream religions tolerant when they proclaim that their religion is the only one of any value. The self proclaimed true religions happen to be the Catholic Church, the Mormon church, the Soka Gakkai Buddhist group, for example. 50 years ago, many religious organizations align themselves with such groups as the Ku Klux Klan.

I think that religious organizations and spiritual organizations have value and in many ways demonstrate those values. I also think that in order to be relevant and in tune with the American public, religious organizations must change with the mood of the American public. there will always be radically intolerant people and radically intolerant religious groups such as the Westbury Baptist Church.

This document should be in my toilet bowel and I should be on it.

Yea this crap is about as mainstream as Rove himself.

No need to read it - i already despite it based on what Bill has already said. Its the usually crap from the church - some bogus propaganda packaged as christian doctrine - keep spewing that vomit while you progress about a century slower than the rest of us. Actually evolution was almost 150 years ago so I guess that would be two centuries.

Didn't the Nazis think their views were mainstream?

The nazis views were mainstream in Germany at the time. Most of Europe in the 1930s were vehemently anti-semitic. At the same time, the USSR was having pogroms in which they would destroy, loot and maybe kill people in Jewish households. And in many countries, people seemed all too willing to begin implementation of the Holocaust in that country and set up local nazi governments. Among occupied countries, Poland was the only country that really ever offered up any substantial resistance to Nazi occupation after the fall of Poland. Im not saying there weren't heros in most countries that stood up against Nazism. Im just saying they really didnt encounter all that much opposition once they conquered each country. Therefore, one could say in 1940s Europe Nazism was mainstream. And Germany was so brain washed by Nazism, after the war, the allies had to undergo a massive program of denazification for those who were not convicted of war crimes or crimes against humanity. The entire country as well as a few surrounding areas were forced to do this. Its amazing how radical mainstream can be.

I should say France also put up significant resistance to the nazis even after occupation obviously but most occupied countries were shockingly passive once defeated.

The guys from Slayer really hit the nail on the head with the lyrics to 2006's "Cult": http://www.slayer.net/us/music/christ-illusion/cult

With all due respect to the signatories of the Manhattan Declaration, they need to stop complaining. Look at what they did in California with proposition 8. They prevented same-sex couples from getting married, a legal institution provided to all (except homosexuals). Now they have the nerve to say that their views are being attacked by "powerful forces" in our culture.

If they want their message to be heard, they should attempt to convince individuals to believe what they do, rather than imposing those beliefs on individuals by passing laws, with the benefit of their tax-exempt status. All they are is a bunch of hypocrites. They want everyone to see things their way and it doesn't matter what rights they trample over. However, if even one of their beliefs are impinged upon, they get agitated and cry about how oppressed they are. These individuals are not oppressed in the least. If anything, it's these individuals who are the oppressors. It's sad that these people feel their beliefs are more important than an individual's right. That feeling is not mainstream and is not what our Constitution was founded upon.

One must really question "why" Karl Rove was chosen to discuss this subject, since his past involvement with the Bush Administration is still being questioned. He is still performing at his old job - setting the stage for Political Strategies to unfold.

Think of it this way - the Republican Party has always been held up by a stool with three legs. One leg being those that favor an unrestricted free market system, one leg being the population known as the Moral Majority, and one leg being the group that thinks government has gotten to large and is infringing on individual rights and liberties.

Their most recent experiment in the unrestricted free market system is responsible for our current economic collapse so they can no longer use that leg to support their party or to use in political arguments.

In order to buy precious time to reorganize and find another leg for their three legged stool they have implemented the many conspiracy theories and accusations as a distracting mechanism. Maybe by bringing forward the "Manhattan Declaration" they are attempting to use the Secular Government Movement as a temporary Leg for their stool.

When they finally find a permanent leg and feel comfortable with using it as a foundation for their party, we will see less conspiracy theories put out in the media and more focus put on the new ideas that the leg stands for.

      Just my opinion!!
