Really like the crucifix around your neck, Laura...nice touch. You represent modern day Republican Christianity quite well.

BTW, what I enjoy the most about this manufactured Harry Reid controversy is that for the first time in a good while Barack Obama is not being accused of doing something wrong...unless they want to say that he did something wrong by forgiving Harry Reid.

I think the thing that bothers me the most about this whole Harry Reid fiasco, being black, is not that he said.. but more so, that.. what he said was actually true and conversatives could've gained alot of my respect by admitting that.. yes, what Harry Reid said was a sad but true fact in the American culture.

Unfortunately, exactly what I thought would happen, happened and they are so caught up with the fact that he said 'Negro' instead of actually listening to what he said. The right-wing is just so politically charged.. that instead of taking what he said and actually thinking about it.. they're seeing this as an opprotunity to rid Harry Reid of his position and I think it's sickening.

What Harry Reid basically did was point out exactly why the Right-Wing will never have the support of the minority voters because they just don't get it, when it comes to the issue of race and it's unfortunate that people are more mad that he said 'Negro' and not as mad about this being a true fact in our culture. It's sad.

Well said. What really is obvious to thinking people is that the statements by Reid and Lott are actually polar opposite in their meaning and intent.

The Troglodytes are either too stupid or too disingenuous to admit this.

As humans we are all ignorant to a certain extent, but to compare support of a segregationlist to Reid pointing out a flaw in our culture.. is just ridiculous and it just sounds like a cop out by the Conversatives to.. essentially hide their inability to properly deal with race relations in America.

Pretending racism doesnt exist, does not eliminate the problem and neither does blaming someone for pointing it out. Having proper discussions about the topic and actually coming to some sort of medium is the only thing that will make this touchy subject of racism in America and non-issue.

I think Republicans just assume that because Obama is black and was voted in by majority that race relations in this country have just gone away.. and people who actually think, realize that him being elected was just the beginning of a much worse period of race relations in this country.

                Conversatives
Seems appropriate considering the meaning(s) of 'converse':
                con·verse
                ADJECTIVE:
Reversed, as in position, order, or action; contrary.
                NOUN:
                (knvûrs)

Not to knock you too much there, Prospect, but whether you're a Black Republican, Democrat or Independent, the term "Negro dialect" shouldn't be cool..I think the better term would have been "Hip Hop dialect," since that's what he basically meant.

Yea, I 'understood' what he meant, but the thing is, if Rush Limbaugh had said it, I'd be pretty PO'd, so I can't sit here and let Harry Reid slide because I agree with his political standing.

Should he be fired? Not at all..but I think we should use this as a learning point, because people actually feel that way on both sides of the aisle. They think that when a Black person is speaking slang, he's Black, and when he speaks properly, he's "Acting White." Conversely, if a White kid speaks in slang, he's "Acting Black." Anyone who says something like that needs to be called on it, I don't care if my Mom said it (although nobody else but me better call her on it! lol).

And if anyone needed to know, I'm a Black male, a government worker in DC, and supporter of Obama.

See well.. I see your point. The term 'Negro dialect' could have been phrased differently. I guess with me, and I've had to do this a lot being in the military, I take the message as opposed to the words. The word 'Negro' doesn't much offend me since I believe he said it in the right context.

Will I sit here and say that had Rush Limbaugh said the exact same, I wouldn't be a tad bothered? No. I mean that's a person who's had a history of saying racially insensitive things (not necessarily "racist" things) and I would have held him to a higher.. "standard" I guess the word would be.

Regardless, I'm somewhat glad that he used that word, because had he not of used the red flag word 'Negro', the conversation would've never been brought to the forefront like it has been. The word 'Negro' is what brought this whole thing about so I have to be at least somewhat satisified that we've finally began talking about a topic that is really a black mark (no pun intended) on our culture as Americans.

I have to agree. All Reid said was that if you strip away the substance of Obama's campaign, he's still a more electable candidate in terms of appearance. It's sad, but true. Many people find lighter skin black people to be more appealing. If you're black, it works against you to have an accent or speak in any terms that are stereotypically seen as "black". These are things that are said even among the black community. To be honest, there are some older blacks who have issues with other blacks to the extent that they won't even see a doctor who's black. Negative stereotypes are carried everywhere even among the people being stereotyped. And politically, Obama was fighting against that stereotype and showed America a side of the african american community that was only put on public display through the Cosby Show. An educated black family who have a strong sence of family and have achieve much success. This is the point Reid was making. Could he have phrased himself better? Yes. Is the word "negro" the focus of his comment? No. Republicans have chosen to make this the focus however. All the while, they're screaming how non-racial they are. They are screaming about how they're the party of Lincoln (which is false because republicans were alot more liberal back then before they adopted that southern strategy garbage), and how none of them view race as an issue. They are also in love with talking about how poor Trent Lott was treated for agreeing with Strom Thurmond's racist segregationist beliefs. This is truly apples and oranges, but to republicans it's all fruit so let's compare. The truth of the matter is that they are trying to score points by saying "the Dems are racist and we have proof", when they should be using this as an opportunity to open up a real discussion of race relations in America. Harry Reid said Obama was more electable than other african american candidates because he's educated light skinned and uses proper english at all times. What the right should be asking is "Why". And not just to Senator Reid, but to all of America. Why is there such a negative conotation with blacks that when one steps out as a positive role model, he/she is seen as superior to the rest. Why does society favor fairer skin? And if they feel that blacks in general are undereducated, what can be done to fix the education system that is failing them? (Other than vouchers for private school and tax breaks because there are many reasons why that isn't a true solution)

I tend to use terms a bit more carefully than others, but here's the breakdown of my three terms:
Christian: followers of (the) Christ/Messiah, usually found giving their time and money to helping those less fortunate.
christian: generic term for those who claim to be 'followers of Christ'. May be Christians or Xians, dependent on their actual actions.
Xian: pseudo-christians, usually know little of the actual Bible, most of their 'religious education' comes from the interpretation by their 'pastors', usually complaining about how they are 'hated' (see Gospels for Jesus/Yesha's prediction that his followers will be disliked by others)

No, Ms. Ingraham, this is not bad for the Democrats, but it is bad for the Republicans. And any American who can think knows that there is no double standard from the Dems. But what about the Republican double standard?

After Ft. Hood, you and your ilk were heads over heels about the supposed "Political Correctness" in our society that somehow prevented others from seeing the gunman's radical frame of mind. You all condemned PC then. And yet, when Mr. Reid seems to violate PC with his archaic language, you are up in arms about it, demanding his punishment. Either you are for PC or you are against it!

Personally, I think that this is just more proof that you and your ilk have no sense of standards at all.

Exactly. Republicans have hurled themselves into the principle that white racism no longer exists, and that the only people in history to be racist are Henry Louis Gates and Sonia Sotomayor (a racist being defined as someone who doesn't enjoy being arrested and/or thinks minorities have had more experience with discrimination than white people). So anyone who finds their sudden willingness to cry "racism" at a white guy sincere is so stupid they were probably already a Republican voter anyway.
