Oh, of course, we need a reasonable argument as to why we shouldn't detain and torture sitting congressional leaders. Us darn libs! Always assuming basic human decency is a given, rather than something that should be argued (preferably on cable news and with corporate money).

            Ted Baxter should be waterboarded,

and then deported. This is an act of treason against the United States, as well as inciting violence against elected officials.

Here, here! seahawks123 does raise an EXCELLENT point. It is simply uncouth to use such derogatory language when discussing Bill O'Reilly's very honorable suggestion that the CIA should kidnap Congressional leaders and torture one of them. Use of such derogatory language contributes to the decline of our civilization, and I dare say it goes against the very fabric of western social values!

As my mother would say: If you don't have anything nice to say when discussing Bill O'Reilly's desires to kidnap, torture, rape and pillage, then don't say anything at all!

O'Reilly is a pathetic thug. Comparing him to a troglodyte is an insult to troglodytes. Right-wingers think he's just hunky dory. I suggest you buy a brain cell. Of course it will die of loneliness. There are no arguments against what he said other than to say he doesn't give a horse's patoot about the fact that both of those people have been elected to serve in the offices they hold. Advocating kidnapping is to deny their constituents representation. How can you defend advocation of capital crimes?

Seahawks, "libs" is the word you use when you don't know how to spell "liberal," or haven't realized that there are many people on the left who aren't "Liberal," and would define themselves otherwise. There's no argument to be had.

        Exactly.

Centrist, pro-life, Mormon Harry Reid, who has a lifetime "liberal rating" of only 70% (a lower lifetime "liberal rating" than the likes of Max Baucus, Joe Lieberman or Blanche Lincoln according to Americans for Democratic Action) would be surprised to learn he is on the left "fringe".

O'Reilly and Beck do not care about reality though.

That doesn't sounds like O'Reilly. It sounds like Beck. Before anyone asks: Yes. We libs know this is a joke. But why do Beck's joke always turn on these violent fantasies? And why is the audience cheering more than laughing at the idea of Pelosi being waterboarded? The real fallacy that should be highlighted in this though is the claim that Republican opposition is all about their dislike for Reid and Pelosi. That they'd be able to work something out if it wasn't for those 2. That can't possibly be true but that claim shows what a childish, petty person he really is.

Just Beck ? Violence and murder seem to be the punchline to almost all right wing jokes. I still get emails from the mother of an ex-girlfriend, a sweet, gentle soft-spoken woman in her 60s. Just about every wingnut "funny" she forwards to me ends up with Obama /Pelosi/Frank being brutally murdered or tortured.

Usually with a heading along the lines of "this is funny, no matter who you are !" or " Don't get offended, this is funny !"

See, now that's funny. When O'Reilly says it, he truly means it. That's the difference here. We know how to say things funny, they say things and are SERIOUS. There is NO WAY O'Reilly was just teasing about Nancy. And even if he was TRYING to make a joke, we'll beat him up over it like he truly ment it. But when we say things like "Hannity should be waterboarded" or "O'Reilly needs to be taken to a secret location and beaten to death with a falafel" that's just funny stuff and everyone knows it. See the difference?

Ummm. I'm guessing you don't see a difference between an anonymous poster on the internet and a highly visible pundit speaking to large numbers of people?

And see, the humor comes in when raddave references a falafel. An obvious allusion to Bill's previous legal troubles around sexual harassment. AND I think it's next to impossible to beat someone to death with a falafel.

And Hannity SAID he was willing to be water boarded to show it wasn't torture and then refused to follow through.

He's been the go to guy when a wingnut wants to talk about equivelent anger on both sides of politics. Generally they just say he's horrible and never get into what he has said nor why.

you gotta play to the audience. the droolers who paid to see these two intellectual titans thought it was hilarious.

That said, one of my favorite bumper sticker sightings a few years ago said "Impeach Bush, Torture Cheney". Should the driver have been arrested? Nope. To me, the only difference is that the bumper sticker was funny (irony, based on Cheney being the prime apologist for all things torturous) and BillO was NOT. Can't arrest someone for trying to be funny and failing. We don't have room in our jails for every sitcom writer in Hollywood...

This is clearly humor. Why is this on the front page of mediamatters.org? O'Reilly's point is clearly that the right find it easier to hate Pelosi and Reid than some other leaders that the left could have chosen. You may disagree, but is it really such an unreasonable thing to think? Compared to everything that could be said about Beck and Hannity (and O'Keefe), should this story really be on the front page? This is a non-story and diminishes mediamatters' credibility.

How is this not a considered a criminal offense under the Terroristic Threat definition? At the end of the clip O'Reilly says to the effect, "...that's what I want to do." Saying you want to kidnap and torture someone is illegal I believe. Being a federal official it would seem to be a federal statute to boot, not just a State charge. If one can avoid being charged by adding "I'm just joking around." then crime bosses giving orders can avoid prosecution by simply adding such.

      from the these-guys-should-always-comport-themselves-as-broadcasters dept:

this isn't on fox news and anything these guys say on this tour of their's is not necessarily the opinion of news corps, nor should their remarks in this context/venue be held up to journalistic standards, any more than those of a stand-up comic... they certainly wouldn't make these types of attempts at humor on the air (well, maybe beck would)...

what strikes me about this thread is the so called "exclusive audio"... usually these types of events bar the use of recording devices, as well as unauthorized reproductions thereof... it will be interesting to see if o'reilly and beck demand that media matters not only cease and desist with the use of this audio, but also pursue their source... again, assuming that no taping was allowed or credentials issued...

Have any of you ever been waterboarded??? I have and it's not torture, just friendly persuasion. Is there anyone here with a sense of humor? I've been to the Ann Coulter website and the comments about 'your' idols are not nearly as acid soaked as yours. Yes, I'm a conservative Independent and I just wanted to see how the other side lives. I'm not impressed. You are as bad as the people you hate.
