Mr. News
Roger got in 2 under a minute.
I think that being on in so many businesses and other places gives them too much false power since people might lend them legitimacy because they see it turned on everywhere.
Typically a home or a family agrees to have their television viewing monitored by a ratings company... Nielsen's for example. The home is then installed with various peices of equipment to be installed into phone lines and their various electronic components that will be monitored.
These families then become representatives of a certain percentage of the population and their viewing serves as a sample of a wider and unmonitored portion of the population. This is called satistical sampling.
If I am not mistaken, commerical properties are not permitted to be part of the sample, and therefore would not be factored into the ratings.
Ratings services also utilize tools like polling to gather further information and come up with their estimates.

(Although a little dated)
and Kikabi was able to articulate much better then I about my perceived influence of people that might answer polls or even watch more at home as their livelihood may depend on being how much they might relate to their management.
Also, never feel guilty about going with your gut. You could be wrong a thousand times, but that one time where your gut instinct took over, and the outcome is in your favor, could mean all the difference in the world.
That quote is very reminicent of Limbaugh's" "Radio is first; a business." I swear these two were separated at birth, they even physically resemble each other.
It doesn't matter what garbage people are handed for news, and/or commentary, it is the financial bottom line.
Now there is integrity for you. JR Ewing "Oh hell, once you have lost your integrity, the rest is easy."
If I recall correctly, Bernie Madoff was quite well trusted by HIS clients... right up until the moment of his indictment.
I think that's the point off MMFA's posting.
Here is how Ailes brain likely works.
1. Ratings are good because I can make lots of money.
2. Talking about politics in a completely partisan way gets me high ratings because people (at least the ones that buy stuff from my sponsors) don't want debate on air, they want a point of view.
3. The more partisan FOX is the better the ratings and the more money I make.
4. The Republicans/Tea Baggers have started adopting the talking points I am pushing on my shows.
5. Politics = Ratings
When you reach number five you really understand why Ailes was making an honest statement. There is no difference between Politics and Ratings in our media perverted country. The feedback loop between FOX reporting on/pushing political ideas and getting people elected, which then go on FOX to push new ideas which causes a ratings increase which makes Rodger more money.
A perfect feed-back loop.
(Granted only sci-fi movies have been made about that so far, but it is "entertainment"

So that's Ailes' answer? They cut away from the Obama speech at the Republican Retreat because they are the "most trusted name in news". Talk about repeating slogans.
