Of course, a guy I work with, who I showed some NASA data to, told me that NASA is part of the gigantic huge coverup for global warming, and that they can't be trusted.

Never you mind those peer reviewed scientific studies, they're in the TANK!

The notion that some serious snow and cold weather IN THE WINTER negates or refutes global warming trends is the height of simplistic "thinking". And of course they refer to Sarah Palin's opinion that the science behind global climate change studies and predictions is bogus, presumably because "global warming=junk science" is written on her palm in magic marker.

I can't wait till this summer's brutal heat waves, when we know that these guys won't have one thing to say about climate change.

It's hardly worth even trying to debate with these clowns anymore. They are like the kids in some of my classes- I mention that the average American family has two children, and one of them is sure to pipe up "that's not true, my family has 6 children, and everyone on my block has at least four!"

Severe weather around the world, unusually warm temperatures in Northern temperate zones, glaciers melting, lakes and inland seas shrinking, sea levels rising, unusually powerful hurricanes, etc.-- nope, if it's snowing in February, there's no global climate change.

Pounding my head against the wall would be more productive than trying to debate these losers.

I'd go a step further, jjamele. It's completely pointless to try to have a discussion with a devout Climate Change Denial Cultist.

In fact, we need to recognize a small victory on the part of the Deniers. They may not be able to come up with any facts or science to help their cause, but they have been pretty effective at rounding up enthusiastic and loyal congregants to go along with them.

I have an acquaintance who just mentioned the snowstorms in D.C., snickering about Global Warming to me. This is a man who has done the same thing last winter, and the winter before. I've had conversations, and sent him links to websites explaining very clearly why this is faulty thinking. (He never mentions "Global Warming" during the summer, which is about eight months of the year here).

The reason I don't mind mentioning this small victory for the Deniers is that I think it's going to be pretty short-lived. The guy mentioned above is typical of most Denial Cultists I know personally; Over 55, overweight, and generally scared of any changes to his lifestyle.

Over 55, overweight, and generally scared of any changes to his lifestyle.

That's because they know they're only gonna be around for about 20-25 more years, and why should they concede any creature comfort to help save the planet.

It's selfishness. A common trait in the nutjobs.

From my personal, small and un-scientific survey of deniers, that 20-25 years is a longshot. Mostly obese heavy drinkers who may be on borrowed time already.

But they all drive big vehicles while not hauling or towing anything but their big butts. That's what's important to them. The transition from driving to sitting on the couch watching sports should involve as little discomfort as possible.

            Selfishness is THE unforgiveable sin.

Because nations want their neighboring countries' natural resources, they invade and start wars. Because people are greedy, they violate SEC regulations to steal from others. They want to satisfy their own personal sexual desires, and so they selfishly violate their marital vows.

They want short term gains without consideration of long term consequences because they're selfish, and so they don't care if they're hurting the environment for generations to come. I could go on and on.

It shows their hypocrisy though. They're supposedly the party of great morals and supporters of Christianity, but many aren't either - because their selfishness overwhelms the other traits.

Jesus gave us one very important rule - do unto others.... but they don't care what they're doing to poor people in poor countries or others.

The motto of American selfishness: "Why should I have to pay for someone else's ________ (Fill in the blank)." The response to health care reform is the perfect example of much of America's greed and selfishness.

A Fox viewer would be left with the impression that these storms are some sort of devestating refutation of climate change theory. They would probably assume that those concerned with CO2 (like obama) would be acting on purely ideological and political motives since the theory is now toast. Concern for the climate implies some kind of sinister conspiracy theory and nothing more.

Someone who watches Fox only would have difficulty understanding the how the naturaly variability of climate actually makes CO2 more dangerous. Bigger winter storms can be a part of a warming world.

The climate is already turbulent and chaotic, therefore adding more heat to the climate system is not a good idea in a world with a population approaching 9 billion people. Fox viewers are told that there is no need to procede cautiously because being cautious is actually liberals acting irresponsibly.

Fox viewers are told that climate variabilty somehow negates the possibility that CO2 would have an impact on that variabilty.

More heat can mean more moisture and deeper storms. Scientist never said the CO2 would make winter go away or cause some sort of smooth transition to a warmer climate. Fox viewers are conditioned to selectively use cold weather to dismiss something they are also conditioned to not understand.

Fox viewers are at a disadvantage when it comes to understanding the issues around climate change. This is Ok since they were never supposed to decide for themselves anyway.

SEE! SEE! Look at all that snow! Global warming? This proves global warming is a lie!! But ignore the fact that when all that snow melts it would disprove our talking-points.

      Which is worse...

That these clowns are willing to sell themselves to happily flap their gums for their corporate masters with these lies

or that a rather large chunk of the brain-dead watching these morons will actually BELIEVE THEM???

If the deniers believe the snow in the eastern part of the country debunks global warming then they also needto address the unseasonably warm weather in the west. They are being dishonest by ignoring that.

Douchy says climate change was one of the platforms Obama ran on in the last election. He then mentions McCain as if McCain didn't share Obama's views on this. (I think he just did that so he could mention his buddy, Palin.)

Anyway, if McCain had won, Douchy would still have the same issue with the White House.

McCain also knows ACC is real, and we need to do something about it. At least, that's what his position was during the campaign.

      http://www.npr.org/news/specials/election2008/issues/climate.html

Not sure what McCain thinks now. Who knows, maybe he flip-flopped on this issue too. "I was before it, before I was against it." Or something like that. ;-)

Granted I'm not a scientist but I think most people accept that there was an Ice Age and that we're no longer in one right now, so there must have been a Climate Change????

Even deniers admit that the climate has a volatile past. Forget about the snow in the capital, New York was once under ice year round...

How about taking some responsibililty! If the sun controlls the climate completely and the Co2 impact is minimal, we at least have a modernized energy system. Coal and oil don't last forever.

The responsible thing to do is to not export the climate risk to future people or even all those unborn children. Same goes for the doomed carbon based energy system. Not to pretend these risks don't exist or will go away is irresponsible. It would be nice to have the luxury of keeping our little blind spots, however taking resonsibility for each other and the future is something that markets don't do very well. WE THE PEOPLE have this repsonsibility.
