That entire episode was actually really good. Especially the early part about Harding, Coolidge, and the Roaring 20's.

            Mag-
You need to understand the liberal mindset. As you have seen in their responses to you they will not attack or respond to any post that incorporate what people in the real world call "facts". They WILL attack you personally and anyone with any opinion that differs in the slightest with their narrow idealogy. In other words, unless you just posting to mess with their empty cranium or just trying to kill time you will have no success in altering their views because they are not interested in listening to other opinions. They are the tolerant ones.

I hope he's a CEO of a fortune 500 company. Otherwise, I think he's shrieking "Dun't trayd on mah!" in the wrong direction. I mean, Obama and the Democrats might be in bed with the corporations like all of congress, but at least their not performing a "Cleveland Steamer" or a "Canadian History" for them, like the "conservatives" he supports are.

If you're a working class American, like most of us, then you are getting your sack stomped on by corporate entities and their rapidly increasing control over our democratic process. Try yelling your slogans at them. Oh, right. They only listen to major shareholders.

So lowering the tax rates in the 20's - which actually increased federal receipts - and shrinking the size of the government were the two things that caused the Depression?

What exactly was misleading about what Beck said? It either did or did not happen.

MagCynic: "smaller government and lower taxes helping to usher in the economic boom of the 20's"

Or was it the rapid industrialization of the midwest, vastly enlarged markets in war-burnt Europe, and wild speculation by the mega-rich beneficiaries of railways and, oil?

And: *was* Government smaller in the 20's? And: for whom were the 20's prosperous? In any case, all of the forgoing - your points and mine - led to the Great Depression.

It seems to me your view of history is a bit simplistic.

I did say helped to usher in the economic boom of the 20's. I never said it was the only reason.

The fact of the matter is, though, that lower taxes for everybody is better than higher taxes for the rich. Less government spending is better than more government spending.

Was Beck wrong when he said that the income tax was originally supposed to be 1% for most people and 7% for the rich? Those rates - we were told according to Beck - were supposed to stay that way forever. Is Beck wrong in any of this?

"I did say helped to usher in the economic boom of the 20's. I never said it was the only reason."

                    Fair enough.

"The fact of the matter is, though, that lower taxes for everybody is better than higher taxes for the rich."

Not necessarily. "Lower taxes for everybody" just means Gov't has less with which to do what it needs to do. " Less government spending is better than more government spending." Not necessarily again. Government spends what it needs to spend.

"income tax was originally supposed to be 1% for most people and 7% for the rich ... Those rates ... were supposed to stay that way forever"

This comes from the wikipedia article on the 16th Amendment: "To raise revenue to fund the Civil War, the income tax was introduced in the United States with the Revenue Act of 1861. It was a flat tax of 3% on annual income above $800. The following year, this was replaced with a graduated tax of 3-5% on income above $600 in the Revenue Act of 1862."

I'm not sure where Beck got his 1% or 7%, but unless time stands still, no income tax rate is going to stay any way forever!

When talking about the idea of a progressive income tax, President Wilson supposedly said that the rates would be locked in at 1% and 7% forever.

The rates could be locked in assuming the government didn't go apeshit crazy with spending on various entitlement programs.

So, when Beck is for it, you are suddenly for taxing the rich 7 times what you tax everyone else? Interesting flip-flop considering you were just ranting about higher taxes for the rich.

Very well: there is a non-lie in Beck's spiel. It's still rubbish. And it contradicts his current Obama-bash that it's naughty to tax those who earn a lot.

Actually the economic boom of the 20's came about as a part of the industrial boom in the United States. Europe was still reeling after World War I. This country was left relatively untouched and there was an increased demand for our products.

The lessons learned from the 1929 crash, if nothing else, demonstrated the need for stronger government regulation of the financial sector. Small groups of the wealthiest investors were able to manipulate stock prices and push them to artificially high levels. Those of more modest means were able to purchase shares at 10% margin. As prices stumbled below the margin price many found themselves with virtually worthless investments and unable to pay on what they owed.

So, tighter controls were put on place. FDR increased spending and the country recovered. These are irrefutable facts. Nevertheless, there are still voices that call for a return to the unregulated practices of the '20's eager to point at the excesses of that time as a goal we should aspire towards, ignoring the annoying truth that this country is no longer the only industrial power in the world, and that great wealth in the stock market can only be achieved when you buy low and sell high. When you buy a share of stock you're purchasing it from someone who believes it has reached its peak and its price will fall.

From Wikipedia: "The New Black Panther Party (NBPP), whose formal name is the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, is a U.S.-based black supremacist organization"

You said calling the Sack-on-Forehead movement purely about taxes was "an oversimplification". The Boston Tea Party was entirely about taxation without representation (which you yahoos have, incidentally-- look at Michele Bachmann). So you just admitted that you have no basis for arrogantly comparing your redneck tantrums to the Boston Tea Party.

Does oversimplification mean it has little to do with the movement? Or does it mean there is more to it than that? You tell me. You clearly know what I meant more than myself even though I'm the one that said it.

There WASN'T more to the Boston Tea Party than taxes. So, if it's not entirely about taxes, Teabaggery isn't comparable, except in the sense that you think getting violently angry over vague concepts you can't define are what TEH FOUNDURZ would have applauded.

Sorry, it was a deliberate lie of commission. Beck wants you to make the connection. He's a liar and he's an uneducated liar. The fact that you believe him is very, very sad. His lies are easily exposed by READING.

I'm a common folk, Mag, and I knew the difference. See, I don't listen to a talk radio/television host and believe that he knows what he's talking about. I hear something and I READ. I look it up MYSELF. Using the excuse that you are "common folk" to excuse your ignorance is pathetic and very sad. See, being EDUCATED is not a sign of sophistication, nor is it a sign that a person is not "common folk," it just means they don't choose to live their lives in ignorance.

Oh, and the teabaggers started calling themselves that, Mag. They were the ones running around wearing tea bags on their hats. Personally, I just think they are a bunch of fools. Half of them don't even know what they are protesting . . . they just don't like that black man in THEIR White House.

You obviously have chosen to remain in ignorance . . . good luck with it. I'm just waiting for Beck to own up to the fact that he's just playing you . . . . just like he's always played his audience. He's LAUGHING at you, Mag. He thinks that you "common folk" are STUPID as hell to be listening to and BELIEVING his crap. That's his schtick. He's been using it for years. You're being had.

Comic books don't count... Mr. Beck is a modern day patent medicine salesman. He peddles anger and fear. Marxist, Communist, Mao, bureaucrat, tax and spend, are a handful of his favorite right-wing outrage triggers. Unfortunately for the greater society his product is bad for those who want it.

Honestly, whenever I'm in the car during the day I like to tune in to one of four right wing radio stations to play, "how long before the screeching white guy gets mad?" It often takes less than a minute.

thats sums up, better than anything else, the prevailing mantra of the Beck audience. They dont want to think , they simply want their fears and prejudices confirmed. this is a troubling time ,as most eras are, and Beck can tell them whos at fault.why is it that any time a black organization encourages self improvement among black people that they are deemed supremist. I for one am not afraid of Black self defence parties, and given their treatment by so many police agencies , I dont blame them.

The main thing that is FALSE is that Beck leaves his uninformed and totally blind followers with the impression that California is just chock full of radicals and is DANGEROUS. There are dangerous groups and radicals ALL OVER THIS COUNTRY and, believe it or not, the majority of them are right wing groups.

But, because you actually believe that this uneducated, radio DJ con-man knows what he's talking about, you would never believe that. As I said, you're probably one of the people who would have shown up at the imaginary underground amusement park that Beck promoted a while back. You don't question any of his CRAP. It's really sad.

The fact that he has no principles. That he will flip-flop on an issue once it goes from being G-Dub's problem to being Obama's problem. He is playing a character that is a libertarian and simpletons buy it. Any unbiased mind could clearly see by the change in Beck since Obama took office that he is a partisan charlatan. I am sorry you cannot see this for yourself. That you have actually devolved into worship of him. (Bet you a million trillion dollars Beck reads more books than you do.) It is truly sad. That you cannot see his obvious change from when G-Dub was president to when Obam became president just shows you to be a partisan.

And I would still love for you to explain why Barack Obama is not an American name, but Glenn Beck is. And also explain how that is not a racist, xenophobic rant from your superhero.

My personal favorite is when the Becker attempts to actually defend Beck enjoying the fact that peoples' houses are burning by saying "It's not like he was jumping up and down going yip-yip-yahoo." Wow. The depths to which these Beckers will sink to defend their hero is startling.

First the 20s were a time of unregulated paradise (never mind the Depression it led to). Now, he is defended because he was only happy that peoples' houses were burning and not jumping up and down in joy. Truly remarkable.

He also added F. Scott Fitzgerald and mocked The Great Gatsby. Not to mention he sat down with Horowitz who spoke in defense of McCarthy and Nixon. Horowitz used to be a big fat commie revolutionary, but has seen the light. According to Beck CA is ground zero for progressive communist/marxists. Wasn't it his pal Oreilly who suggested that my city San Fran be nuked or meet some ill fate a few years ago? WOW!

Funny you mention one of the leaders/enablers of todays right-wing politics in relation to a former leader of the mob. I was just thinking about how my mind map has been redrawn by the GOP.

You'd read about the robber barons going back over a hundred years. And Mark Twain around that time saying that the only criminal class in America was the congress. I used to think, "Yeah sure", -- a good line but he must have been exaggerating for effect. And about the mob, I thought that was as bad as it gets.

Now I no longer give much thought to the breaking of society's laws, even on a massive scale. Now it's the very nature of our society which occupies my mind. It probably always should have.

You're being unfair to Al Capone, soze. He may have been a murderer, a racketeer, and a tax cheat, but what did he ever do that would warrant comparing him to doughboy?

Him in alcatraz sounds pretty good. Or give him a room in the Tenderloin. Or have him run up & down Lombard Street for an hour. Or climb Coit Tower a dozen times. Put him on the Balclutha as a display of the kind of person that would get shang-heid in the old days.
On the other hand, he doesn't deserve your beautiful city. (Lived there most of the '70s & miss it!)

And the CASTRO. And at some point in its history, someone in California probably said the words "social justice". AND Glenn knows that Mexicans are all communists, since putting everyone you hate together makes things that much easier. WAKE UP, AMERICA!!!!1!1!!one!!!!

You'd think Beck would be a fan of California; without the precedent set by Charlie Manson, how would he have gotten a career hearing secret messages and setting his followers on the Bad People?

Funny how this mole didnt say anything about Arnold or RaGun who destried that state. I wonder what Nancy has to do with the day to day bussiness with Cali or any other group.
How can anyone listen to this clown?
