He was anti-capitalist. Hated Bush. Not a single derogatory word about Obama. Hated unfair business.

I don't know if he was left or right wing (as there are plenty of conservatives who hate Bush), but to say unequivocally that he was a "right-wing radical" is a hasty inference and y'all know it.

No, he'd come back whether we responded to him or not. The myth that trolls go away when they don't get attention is just that, a myth. They just come back with different screen names. Allowing their BS to stand unanswered is more risky than revealing it as BS.

Yes, they would. They just come back with another name, they derail threads with nonsense, people ignore them. Rinse, wash, repeat. I'm not an internet novice. Seen it many, many times. A true troll never gives up and, when ignored, their nonsense stands unanswered for all the world to see and belief.

While "don't feed the trolls" sounds good in theory, you are depending on trolls being normal, rational human beings . . . most of them, as is evidenced here, are not.

He hated the IRS because he had to strike out, and refused to acknowledge his own role in his downfall. He, like so many other rightwingers, pretended that he was a victim when he really wasn't.

He CHOSE to try to evade lawfully-owed taxes by taking part in a scheme back in the 1980's where he and many others pretended that they were in-home churches to get the tax breaks that religious institutions get. Now, if one wants to argue that churches shouldn't get off tax-free, that's fine, but no individual should pretend that they're a church to get off from lawfully-owed taxes. That's the first scam he tried to run WRT taxes owed.

He failed to pay business taxes multiple times out in California, resulting in him losing his business charter twice. He's a "victim" of his own actions, not a true victim. His first wife filed for bankruptcy claiming over $100,000 in back taxes owed - they weren't paying legit taxes owed during the timeframe they were due!

He later failed to file an income tax return during a year where he didn't have any "income". But he did have money from an IRA that he withdrew. He was willing to take advantage of the tax benefits of utilizing an IRA, but when he took that money out, he should have been willing to pay the penalties for that early withdrawl. But he claims that he was a victim again - that he didn't KNOW that he'd owe a penalty for taking that money out. Liar. He thought he could get away with it, just like he thought he could get away with declaring his home a 'church' back in the 1980's.

Then he did it again - he failed to report his wife's "unreported" income on a tax return, and got caught, and who does he want to blame? His accountant. Well, Stack KNEW that he was filing an inaccurate return when he signed it. He's no one's victim.

He didn't hate the IRS because they had tax loopholes for the "rich". He hated them because none of his tax dodging attempts were successful.

He got caught, and much like convicted criminals who whine and pout about the sentences they receive, he whined. But he got caught by his own dishonest actions.

And IIRC, he met with other like-minded individuals and tax lawyers to discover ways to circumvent tax laws. I also seem to recall that he was using some of the corporate tax techniques. He stated in his manifesto that his actions didn't hurt people like those of churches and corporations. Apparently, the IRS had a different take on his schemes.

Half the ads on the radio are aimed at "honest, hard-working Americans" who mysteriously "forgot" to pay their taxes for five years, and now have the IRS "hounding" them-- and these commercials offer to get the 100 percent legitimate debts owed to the United States reduced. Even if the companies do what they promise, the end result is that the rest of us pick up the slack, or the deficit increases.

Notice how only people who use Welfare, Food Stamps, or other assistance are "entitled" and "spoiled" and "cheaters?" Never people who want to avoid paying taxes- I think it's because the right wing actually respects these losers, who want to continue to drive on roads and use other services on someone else's dime.

I don't agree with that assessment. The way I read it he was mad because he felt other people got breaks he didn't. He was trying to get rich and felt that the govt was holding him back through unfair taxation. I'm curious to find out what he was doing in the '80's. From what he wrote it sounds like he was involved in some sort of scam involving using the tax exampt status of a church to avoid paying taxes. But I wouldn't classify this guy as a right or left wing extremist. Mostly he's just a nut.

Posted by Honest Taxpayer @ 11:49 AM Fri, Feb 19, 2010
The misinformation about the tax law underlying the complaints of this nut-job must stop. The truth is not that difficult to untangle, and I am disappointed that the NY Times is having such a hard time getting there.

          Here goes:

If you are legally considered an independent contractor, the current tax provisions provide certain tax advantages over being classified as an employee--the legal status most of us who collect a paycheck clearly fall under.

For years, technical professionals like Mr. Stack abused the tax system by improperly classifying themselves as independent contractors and got away with it because Congress would not allow the IRS to enforce the law.

In 1986--in a well received exchange of fewer tax scams for lower overall tax rates--Congress put a stop to the moratorium that prevented the IRS from pursuing tax cheats like Mr. Stark. The end result was that as of 1986 he was subject to the same rules as the rest of us.

If in fact he worked as an independent contractor in the future, he could continue to enjoy the benefits of that status. If not, he was no longer entitled to any of the tax benefits that those us who are merely employees can’t claim.

So at the end of the day, what is it this wacko is complaining about?

His tax rate went from 50% to 28% under the 1986 Act. The trade-off for this significantly lower rate was that he could no longer play the tax games that he was probably playing when he classified himself as an independent contractor, a classification that he probably should have never been allowed to claim in the first place.

Is it really any wonder that his purported complaints to his duly elected representatives fell on deaf ears?

It's quite obvious that you have difficulty processing information. The AL professor did not kill her colleagues to make a political statement or statement against the government. Stack did, though. Both are heinous acts, but there is a huge difference between the two.

As for the Alabama professor, she is, just as the man in Austin, mentally ill. She didn't get tenure and she went postal. Also, she killed her brother over 20 years ago.

So, on the one hand we have someone who likes a really popular President. In your mind she is equivalent to someone who had a 30 year history of trying to defraud the IRS and who flew a plane into an office building to try to get back at office workers who only enforce tax laws that this guy violated?

Anyone who doesn’t understand that there are people out there who struggle with society and realty, are uninformed at best.

I don’t know but from what evidence if have read there is no link between the Alabama professor and her recorded devotion to Obama as the cause of her transgressions. Her actions where stimulated over her failure to get tenure at the university she worked for.

When I read the gentleman’s manifesto in Austin, I saw a person with many internal conflicting mindsets, and several mixtures of ideology. He was clearly not a representative from ether of our countries current popular schools of thought rather a conglomerate of mixed rationalities and a sad example of the issues American’s struggle with in our economic times. Let’s be grateful that more people weren’t hurt and quit pointing fingers at people we agree with.

Here is my wild guess: IRS rule 1076 made it difficult for joe to be a self employed independent contractor. he had no desire to be a W2 employee because as a 1099 contractor he would enjoy tax benefits that "the rich" enjoy. My guess is he was forced to be W2 employee and after a good year bought that airplane. Then he tried to write it off as a business expense but couldn't because of his W2 status. thus he is upset that the rich get to write off everything but he could not; and of course this is all george bush's fault. so, like a good citizen, he writes the plane off on his taxes anyway, hoping he doesn't get caught. he indeed did get caught and thus is even more upset about how unfair the system is that others write off corporate airplanes and he as an employee can't. so he fights the IRS over it for awhile and of course can't win against them. in the end decides to let the IRS just have the plane.
