Now Irony being ironic isn't that kind of an oxymoron? I mean wouldn't it be ironic if Irony wasn't being ironic? Ok, wait........I need to watch Star Trek to make this make sense. Only Captain Picard would ge able to explain this.

          Hey Big2,

Irony was being sarcastic...note the winky face as your first clue.

You newbies maybe need to acquaint yourselves with the regs here before posting kneejerk reactions.

Now on topic....I'd tend to trust Colin Powell over Dick Cheney on this issue.

El RustyRushbo has already attacked O'Reilly for being a socialist sympathizer. He would have attacked Rove for saying that the attacks on the president were over the top, except he wasn't broadcasting this weekend. I'm going to be waiting with bated breath tomorrow to see whether El RustyRusbo is willing to take on Rove. It should be very interesting. Colin Powell will definitely be vilified by El RustyRushbo since he has already done it before. What I don't understand about the republicans/conservatives that El RustyRushbo attacks is why isn't at least one of them giving him some sort of pushback? Could it be because they are that 7 letter C word?

When Powell endorsed Obama during the election, Republicans should have thought "Wait, we're doing something really wrong here. Colin Powell is as solid a Republican as anyone, and we lost him."

Instead, of course, people trashed him decision - many, like Rush, saying it was race-based - and now the Republican party is a bunch of know-nothing obstructionist hacks rather than a legitimate other side in the debate. This is probably Bush's worst domestic legacy, even worse than the economy and healthcare: for the first time in over a century, one of the two parties has devolved to the point of offering literally NOTHING in terms of policy or ideas. Even the post-Carter Democrats weren't in that much disarray - Mondale wasn't a great presidential candidate, but he's far more legitimate than the current GOP frontrunners.

Sure, the obstructionism and name-calling might make good short-term politics, but history will not look kindly at the past decade's GOP. They've become the worst major political party in American history - perhaps even in the history of all liberal democracies.

you would have thought that would have been their thought process.....i myself was a great fan of both mccain (before he sold his soul for his nomination) and powell. i hated the fact that he lied in front of the UN, but he left government service for what he did and i have to give him respect for that.

a rational thinking human being, would have said..man we just lost one of our most beloved figures, something is not right. instead they thought that by keeping to the path of kkkarl rove, they would win, man were they wrong. and will keep being wrong, because this kind of wedge politics only works for so long before people wake up.

maybe if powell ran for president i would be more than willing to vote for him as a republican....though i know it will never happen. kkkarl would never allow it nor his klan brother limbaugh

I think Colin Powell touched on a very valid point.

When people complain that we should be handing terrorists over to military commissions, we should ask why?

Is it because they think the military does not follow the rule of law and they will just line these guys up against a wall and have done?

The military has their own issues but; in general, they are way more adamant about following the rule of law than people may realize.

I think the right wing wants to have it both ways. when they want to deny a soldier the rights of a soldier they say he is a criminal or terrorist or enemy combatant and doesnt qualify to be treated as a p.o.w. When we are trying terror suspects in a court of law, all of a sudden they arent regular criminals and dont have the right to criminal trials, or normal criminal procedures.

This reminds me of the day the administration announced KSM's trial would be held in Manhattan. I was over at a friend's house and we have Fox "News" on in the background. The President and Eric Holder were just pilloried for hours. Every guest expert the various anchors had on emphatically proclaimed the decision was wrong and foolish. I didn't hear a single positive word about this, and, not surprisingly, not one person offered a differenting perspective or opinion.

After a couple of hours of this, I had had enough and we switched over to CNN. Wolf Blitzer was on and he had the usual panel of CNN experts, and because they actually try to be fair and balanced for real, the experts ranged over left, right, and center. Anyway, Blitzer asked them the simple question of "why." Why were we doing this? Why Manhattan and why was there protest against it.

I was surprised by my relief in hearing this actual journalistic question. How nice it was to hear a variety of perspectives and opinions on this important subject, allowing me to make up my own mind about it.

After hours of watching Fox, not once did I hear anyone ask the basic, simple question of "Why."

I've always liked Powell. He's extremely loyal and I believe the Bush administration used his loyalty against him. I have a feeling that he shut his eyes and hoped the weapons of mass destruction really were there, that it wasn't all a lie. After all, he had the head of the CIA (his name escapes me) right behind him during the UN presentation which added to the veneer of authenticity.

But that's all just theory, of course.

            George Tenet, I believe.

It's actually not just a theory. Powell was lied to by the CIA (who had been bullied by Cheney and Rumsfeld) and other members of the Bush Administration. He didn't know that the information he presented at the UN was false until after he presented it, which is essentially why he and Armitage resigned. The original dossier he was given was from the Vice President's office - he actually threw it away, knowing it was garbage.

Now, my theory is that Powell - always a solider - decided that the war was Bush's decision to make, and that it was his duty to help wage it. However, administration insiders reveal that he was vehemently opposed to the war, understanding its cost and stupidity, and seriously considered resigning in protest.

You should watch the CBC's "The Bush Years." It's a pretty fantastic documentary - though, like most of the history of the Bush Administration, infuriating.

Yes, George Tenet! Thank you for that and for all the info and documentary recommendation. I'll give it a rent. I'm reading A Tragic Legacy by Glenn Greenwald right now - fascinating and kind of depressing at the same time.

When Powell said the day the WMD threat was officially announced as false was the worst day of his life, I pretty much figured there was weight to my theory. That would be the date when he was forced to accept the full reality of things.

It hasn't made my admiration of him dim. If anything, it's grown stronger because he's been so honest about things since.

I'm sure that Republicans will all step up and demand that Dick Cheney repudiate his claims about the effectiveness of "enhanced interrogation techniques" or as we call it torture, and support General David Petraeus.

"I have always been on the record, in fact, since 2003, with the concept of living our values. And I think that whenever we've perhaps taken expedient measures, they've turned around and bitten us in the backside. We decided early on, in the 101st airborne division, we just said, we decided to obey the Geneva Conventions..."

I have no problem with Powell being a Republican. He is a R in the traditional sense of the word, not a neocon or a nutjob. He marches to his own drummer and calls things as he sees them. He is a moderate, which under today's definition of Republicanism is code word for RINO. In essence, he is not an ideologue, which in a Republican party that is becoming more radicalized by the day, means that he has little weight within his own party.

Powell was actually lied to by the CIA. He thought he was presenting reliable intelligence; he didn't realize that the CIA had been manipulated by Cheney and Rumsfeld and were deliberately misleading people on Iraq's WMD "program." You should read my post above in response to Kikabi.

Also, Powell was privately vehemently opposed to the war, as indicated here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article2042072.ece

There's a fair criticism in his leadership as Secy. of State - he should have made his objections public and resigned. Frankly, I think he's too much of a loyal solider to have done that, but he tried to do the right thing.

Obviously, you've never read the Pentagon's Inspector General's report which pretty much stated that Douglas Feith, specifically, and others "inappropriately manipulated" the intelligence prior to the unnecessary and probably illegal invasion of Iraq in order to fit the Administration's pre-arranged plans. You might want to read them. I realize that there wasn't much mention of this report on Fox because it didn't fit in with Murdoch's stated admission that Fox purposefully supported and PUSHED Bush's agenda in Iraq, but it's still available on line.

Before posting stale, false talking points, you should read the facts.

The link wasn't false, and nobody denies that. The point is that in the lead-up to the Iraq War, the Bush Administration deliberately pushed false intelligence to make it appear that Saddam Hussein was actively pursuing nuclear weapons; Cheney and Rumsfeld made unprecedented visits to CIA headquarters in order to pressure agents to make false statements, and Powell was flat-out lied to. My source on this is "The Bush Years," featuring interviews with Richard Armitage and Valerie Plame, among many others. There are also scores of books written to similar effect.

Besides, the quotes from 1998 are a bit misleading, and entirely out of context. Remember, Clinton fired cruise missiles at Iraq and imposed harsher sanctions.

Colin Powell actually said many other things warning those on the right that Obama bashing is harmful to the country. Here's the longer version of the video:

I worked very hard, had to submit more than 20 posts to prove to MMfA that I would uphold their standards. Now I see comments like these and shake my head in wonder. Can't we have a civil discussion without stooping to this? I love this dialogue, but let's get serious and be constructive.

Normally I do try and post rational thoughts. But sometimes stupid just deserves stupid. This particular individual (ABBA, babba, ding dong) justs posts sophmoroic rants built on the most bats!!t crazy conspiacry theories that can be found. Trying to reason with this individual is akin to trying to teach an elephant to surf...sure it'd be fun to see but it's never gonna happen.

Besides trying to use urbane, gentler metaphors with him is a waste of time since he wouldn't be able to comprehend it.

Oh, and sometimes it just downright fun (and a little cathartic) to lash out with some potty humor every now ad then.

Oh, you mean when Obama said " "it appears that he joined an affiliate of al Qaida, and that this group, al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, trained him, equipped him with those explosives and directed him to attack that plane headed for America." ? Or the fact that the ballburner was a Nigerian student?

the military has absolutely no directive that requires them to disclose investigations to the public. They report to the Pentagon, the President and Congress. Do we really want to know about every investigation the military conducts? The only reason that people like you get worked up about it is because some people of middle eastern descent were involved. Period. You could care less what happened (as evidenced by your nonsensical ramblings), you just want to be able to scream terrorism for any reason and make your pathetic attempts to try to link the President to some conspiracy.

As for Maj Hasan, morons like you like to blame Obama for him, but he entered the military, was trained and was promoted while Bush was president, not Obama. You're twisted little mind can't seem to grasp that simple situation.

There is no such thing as "islamo facism", humjob. Al-Qaeda is a fundamentalist RELIGIOUS organization that seeks to establish a medieval-based Wahhabi RELIGIOUS rule over the people of the earth. They are not even remotely interested in merging the forces of the state with those of the corporations, and are therefore... by definition... not fascists. Like so many other blithering wingnuts, you are profoundly ignorant of the basic definitions of the political terms that you so reflexively regurgitate. Even the wingers at Faux News have stopped parroting THAT particular word. You're posting on a computer, y' know. Hey, Dancing Queen, your analogy is FALSE. What you are saying is that if Obama doesn't learn, he's going to be DEAD like JFK. JFK was MURDERED 3 years after he was elected. He was not a "one term wonder." At the time he was MURDERED, his approval ratings averaged about 70%. He would have won in 1964 had he not been MURDERED. JFK was the first president that I remembered well . . . I remember the day he was MURDERED. I remember where I was, I remember the reaction of all of my teachers. JFK was a very well-loved president, but he was MURDERED.

You have basically made a threat to the life of our president in your false analogy.

You are a very, very stupid person. And, what's said is that you don't seem to understand how stupid you are. How very sad for you.

And Jimmy Carter? What was so terrible about him? Oh, yeah... he urged Americans to drive more fuel efficient cars and to develop new energy technologies in order to wean ourselves off of Middle Eastern oil. Jeez... good thing that we rejected him in favor of Ronald Reagan. Another term of Carter and we might not have had the desire to invade Iraq, and where would we be then? No Middle Eastern oil might have meant no 9/11, and think of all of those poor mercenaries from Blackwater (now "xi") who would be likely out of work.

Because JFK was assassinated. THAT'S what humjob was referring to. He was making a very thinly veiled threat against the life of the President of the United States.

Humjob, at heart, is a fascist thug.

Ah, but that's not what you said. You claimed that JFK was a one term president and that Obama better watch out or he's going to be like JFK. JFK wasn't a one term president, he was MURDERED in middle of his third year in office.

Much better to be the teaBAGGER than the teaBAGGED. Typical teabagged liberal, don't choke.

Obviously you don't know what a racist is... pathetic.... BTW - which half am I racist against, the Caucasian half or the Negroid half??? If only you knew who YOU were calling racist... PROVES that you yourself are the racist ... PROJECTING, just like all left-wing nutters.

and NO you shouldn't make threats against the president..

OH that's REALLY funny jedi knight. You are a REAL FOOL!!!

              The "Negroid half"?

You really are a racist pig, humjob.

And, by the way... I hope you aren't offended if we all reject your repeated offers to teabag us. (shudder) The thought of those two fuzzy little grape tomatoes that you so seem to love pointing to isn't really very appetizing. In fact, it's downright PATHETIC!!!

Now... zip up your pants, troll.

I read, idiot. You claimed that Obama was going to end up like JFK . . . JFK was murdered, he wasn't a "one term president." You're the fricking bozo.

You going to post a link to something you googled which refutes your claim in an attempt to prove it?

What do you expect? Colin Powell endorsed and voted for Barack Obama. His opinions of Obama are obviously going to be biased.

Colin Powell is not a real Republican anymore because he did not fall in line with the rest of them, so the right-wing media will ignore Colin, labeling him as a RINO...
