Remind me again why the FCC does not fine Fox every time this happens; and why anyone has Dick Morris on a program, given that he has no expertise on anything he ever discusses.

Because twenty years ago, as the old senile fool Reagan's administration was coming to an end, his crooked underlings in the FCC "unilaterally" repealed the more than forty years old FCC regulations of EQUAL TIME in the broadcasting of political opinions on the public airwaves, and of REPLY TIME in the broadcasting of personal attacks (and "unilaterally" means without Congressional approval).

Why were EQUAL TIME and REPLY TIME regulations of the FCC in the first place, for more than forty years?

Because the public airwaves are a public resource, not a private one, and they require a License to broadcast on, and we don't issue those very precious Licenses (precious as in not available to you or anyone you know) so that the broadcaster can use them for their own personal political purposes and for personal attacks.

Why would broadcaster's use of this public resource the public airwaves, by way of an FCC License, why would their broadcasting their own political opinions and even personal attacks, be considered unfair or prohibited?

Because you don't have that same political power and platform, do you, and because if you or anyone else is personally attacked on the public airwaves, you wouldn't be able to defend yourself in kind, could you...

Hence a regulatory requirement for EQUAL TIME and REPLY TIME, if those broadcasters use those precious few FCC Licences for broadcasting their own political opinions or personal attacks, on our public airwaves.

        And do know what?

They don't have to do that you know, they can just report the facts, and leave out the opinions, you know... but if they insist on broadcasting their (the broadcaster's) own personal political opinions, then they can allow for EQUAL TIME don't you think, and REPLY TIME in the case of their many personal attacks (which are almost always political in nature).

In a nutshell, what I just described is the true genesis and birth of the Democracy corrupting monster whose foul words and evil deeds are recorded regularly here at MMFA...

That's it, it's the repeal of EQUAL TIME and REPLY TIME that gave birth to the three hundred pound baby rush limbaugh twenty years ago, and to Fox News Channel too, to corrupt our Democracy using our own property, a public resource the public airwaves... and you're SHUT OUT, you can't do the same or even compete or respond, this political broadcast power of the public's airwaves belongs to them NOT YOU!

Sounds fair, and balanced, doesn't it?

And it's worth adding, that this same deregulation (without Congressional approval) of the public airwaves that turned FCC Licenses into powerful political broadcast tools, also coincides with the corporate consolidation of television and radio broadcasters... true.

Especially regarding radio stations and those holders of FCC Licenses.

In conjunction with this deregulation of the airwaves, came a consolidation of those Licenses from dozens of corporate broadcasters to just several.

The same with television broadcasters, we currently have just five mega corporations having all of the television public airwaves under their control.

It's all bad, and it could be fixed, if our FCC would just start serving our interests instead of the interests of those few corporate broadcasters.

Whose airwaves are the public airwaves anyway?

(That's a 'no brainer', the answer is included in the question.)

A bit of nitpicking, but I did take Broadcast Law before Reagan...

Equal Time is a misnomer, equal access and 'sufficient time to rebut' would be more accurate, but either way it was the Fairness Doctrine that supposedly allowed a person to contact their local station and ask to rebut.. however, it had to be a specific claim that was rebutted.
For instance, someone calling WKRP and wanting to rebut the entire Rush Limbaugh Show would have to be denied (under the FD), but they could insist on rebutting a claim made on the show. IF the rebuttal needed the same amount of time as the original claim, it would get that time, but if a serious rebuttal could be made in less time, that would determine the length of the commentary/rebuttal.

Otherwise, the Public Airwaves and the concept of "public interest, convenience and necessity" are correct.

They ran him off because he was a sniveling little jerk who allowed his prostitute "mistress" listen in to what were supposed to be classified discussions with a sitting president. He's a slime.

And, besides that, how can anyone watch him speak for very long at a time. That weird thing he does with his mouth when he speaks DRIVES ME CRAZY! LOL!

The only reason this bill could possibly be defeated in the house is because it is just too centrist - it doesnt have a public option or an expansion of medicare. It doesn't have any conceivable way of bringing down insurance profits and thus, there is no real mechanism at all to keep costs down if insurance companies just want to hike up the rates because they feel like it. The only thing and especially the only thing in this so called capitalist country that can compete with insurance and force down profits and overhead is a strong public option.

A bill cannot force americans to buy insurance from the very companies they despise without providing some alternative government run program without facing the full wrath of the american voter for years to come. People are ignorant but not that ignorant - if they see that the gov't is mandating them to buy insurance from wellpoint, they will be steamed at the government and more specifically, the dems and obama for doing so without giving them any other route.

This part of the bill is why the house is absolutely dying for a reconciliation process ao they can pass this bill and then, alter the bill in the future to ensure adequate reforms are passed. Without a promise of reconciliation or somehow passing more regulation in return for the house passing this bill, they will not vote for it. I love how this moron is arguing that it is too extreme and that is why the house will not pass it when it is abundantly clear that it is the senate and not the house that seems incapable of reform or genuine legislation to regulate an industry. Of course, the house can pass this but do they want to do that at the expense of forcing their voters to buy from those they loathe without adequate cost controls in the bill. And the answer is not without a second round of reform and/or the passing of a strong public option via reconciliation also known as a MAJORITY - what real democracies need to pass things.

I love how we pretend we are capitalist only until we need to bail out the richest financial firms in the world with taxpayer money and we pretend we are a democracy until a majority wants to pass real regulatatory reform and then, we REQUIRE 60 votes. Its beyond frustrating, the senate is inept, corrupt and will take down the entire country if they cannot reform themselves. Since they can't seem to reform anything else, I am highly skeptical that they will able to change their own ways.

If I live in Alabama,I do no want someone in Texas voting for my government representatives. This is something republican party media needs to be called on.They direct money to regional elections. No matter how I vote money can cancel my vote.Scott Brown was elected by money outside the state he represents.Senator Brown must represent the people of Massachusetts,if he wants to keep his job.The republican party southern strategy will not work in Massachusetts.

Brown might, might have a bit of integrity. We'll see how long he holds out against the juggernaut. I guess is Facebook page was just plastered with nasty comments yesterday from the Tea Party crowd simply because he voted for a (gasp) jobs bill that might actually give some of these clowns an opportunity to find a job.

I do not think Brown has a choice. There is no republican party political machine in Ma.There is a strong democratic machine with people in high places, who still run things. This machine may have threw the election in more ways than people know. The trojan horse is still a good tactical device.Republicans playing checkers better realize they are in a chess game. You do not become a king by jumping over a few people in this game
