The difference between McCarthy and Beck is that Joe's followers eventually caught on and turned on him. Beck's followers live in the bubble and nothing will ever make them see Beck for what he is.

I think he's many times more dangerous than McCarthy.

Beck takes Godwin's Law to another level. The worst part is that despite being intellectually and morally bankrupt he's making millions selling this propaganda. Who are the people that listen to this idiot and accept his twisted revisionist nonsense? Does anyone with an education buy into this crap?

Careful here people, don't be fooled.
There are many "educated" people that love to spout his talking points! I work with several bachelor degreed repugs that eat that stuff up and spout it off like the are reeelllyy smmaaarrtt! Of course they all lived with their middle class parents or they put them through school with no debt and one took 6 years to get an ag degree, but he is edumacated so he makes up his own mind! (to spout lies that beckie spouts off and acts as stupid as he can to prove he is right.)
To me it is very scary and limbug and beck is like their god and faux and repuglinism is like their religion while spouting "I am a Christian". They are extremely frightening and I think there are enough of them to really screw things up way worse then it is already. So don't be fooled. We need to keep telling the truth at work and at home as well as here.

Glenn Beck is the reality television of opinion/news programming. He's Fox's version of The Jersey Shore.

We, as Americans, are huge fans of reality TV for one main reason: sane people are never going to be as entertaining to watch as crazy people.

Beck makes like 20 million a year doing what he does. I doubt he wants to give it up anytime soon. His giant salary is completely dependent on him being able to say crazier and crazier stuff and act more and more paranoid everyday. He's gotta keep pushing the envelope. Until one day, I expect, he might push it too far.

This may sound silly, but what is wrong with progress? Do all forms of progress mean impending communism or fascism? Everything is just fine the way it is?

American politics are way more exciting than our boring Canadian politics; whenever there is controversy we just prorogue parliament.

Notice that no one actually critiques what Beck is saying, and simply make ad hominem attacks against him without stating WHY Beck is wrong. Instead of attacking him personally, I want to see actual criticism of the argument he is making. And the fact that he is bringing stuff up that I haven't seen before is what makes Beck a fascinating host. For example: Beck is stating that being "progressive" is another way of saying "evolution towards statism" (i.e. more regulation over the behavior of the citizenry). He then goes on to say how progressivism can lead to one of three routes: socialism (neutral statism), communism (left wing statism) and fascism (right wing statism). The underlying theme is that the state knows better than the citizenry as to how a country should operate. I find that fascinating to discuss, and I wonder why no one here is willing to actually refute Beck other than attack him personally, especially after presenting actual documentation on his program. But, whatever.

And just as back in that day, all this "communism" stuff wasn't in truth a hunt for communists, but was in fact an attempt to intimidate Americans politically, specifically intimidate them from FDR's policies and the 'New Deal' in particular, such as regulation of the banks... it's still the same thing today, all this "communism" noise is simply an attempt to intimidate Americans from regulating the banks and financial services companies, and from anything else that might seem like something FDR would do in our situation. And didn't beck, in the video clip, mention FDR and the 'New Deal'? Old Tricks are the Best Tricks, I guess... the funny thing is, did that work in that bygone day, did Sen. McCarthy and HUAC (it was the same thing there, they were truthfully just trying to intimidate the movie industry from pro-FDR and pro-'New Deal' political opinions), did it work? Before you answer "no, McCarthy imploded and disgraced himself, and HUAC was eventually disbanded", don't be so sure. We have no better regulation of the banks and financial services industry now, than we did back then, witness the theft of a trillion dollars on George W. Bush's and his SEC's non-watch. And they don't make movies like they used to. Not much has changed with them, with Republicans, but have we changed, are we intimidated today, did their tactics work?

Don't answer too fast, because you might be wrong.

Excellent post, Dem. That was EXACTLY the point of HUAC and McCarthy. Their hearings uncovered the names of no Communists whose names had not long before been uncovered. It was to demonstrate that American citizens could be forced to publicly grovel and to denounce their friends, families, and coworkers out of fear of losing their livelihoods. It was to demonstrate the risks that you ran when you spoke up and criticized the right wing thugs who sought to take a stranglehold on the apparatus of American government.

And now that the right... after having had control over the the Executive Branch of the government, both Houses of Congress, AND the Judiciary... has proven its policies to be such utter and abysmal failures, it has amped up its tactics of intimidation through the corporate media.

Lying and smearing, after all, is what they do best.

That guy actually seems to be serious, he seems to think he's actually making some kind of sense.

If somebody would just laugh while he was saying that stuff, then it might seem like a "Saturday Night Live" skit, maybe even a funny one (if you could figure it out).

But humor is out of the question, it might be funny for being ridiculous, but it's not funny because that guy wants it to be, because he's serious, or if he's not serious, then he's one heck of an actor.

The paradox that contemporary American fascists such as Glenn Beck face is that fascism is seen as a discredited ideology. So fascists deny they are fascists and claim that the left is really the right (the fascists). But as always, Beck and his cohorts real target remains the same: the left.

This all really depends on what you think "Progressive" means - if you think it means becoming enlightened, educated and understanding then no one on the left or right should have a problem with that. The issue here is that most "progressives" want to force others to conform to their brand of what is "right"... this means requiring health care, equalizing monetary wealth, criminalizing thought (hate crimes, for example) and removing freedoms (smoking, politically incorrect speech, guns, etc). Although Beck is definitely a WAAAAY over the deep end entertainer at his core he has certain points that are hard to argue with.

Get real, Mesius. Doughboy's "certain points" are EASY to argue with, because (just like your own fantasy list) they're dishonest and/or based on angry wingnut ignorance. Criminalizing thought by passing hate crime bills? Pullleeze! The penalties for ALL violent crimes have ALWAYS been based on the provable mindset of the perpetrator. If I shoot and kill somebody, the charge and the attached penalty have long been determined by my state of mind. If I were simply mishandling a gun and it went off, hitting someone, I would likely be charged with some form of negligence. If I shoot someone in a rage because I found them in bed with my hypothetical wife, then I would likely be charged with 2nd degree murder. If I carefully plotted the shooting, then it would be 1st degree murder. If I shot them in a robbery, I might very well be a candidate for the death penalty (assuming that the victim was white). My state of mind is the determining factor in both the charge AND the penalty.

So too is it with hate crimes. If I've chosen a victim for my violence based on their ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation, then I'm committing a crime not just against an individual, but against an entire class of people. The reason for committing a hate crime is to intimidate an entire community, rather than to settle a personal grudge. It leaves an entire group far more vulnerable and far more easily exploited then a run-of-the-mill crime. Our history as a nation is filled to over flowing with examples of specific groups being terrorized, oppressed, and preyed upon for GENERATIONS because of hate inspired violence. My criminal reasoning... my motive... becomes a key factor in determining the charge and the penalty that I will face. If that makes it a "thought crime", then ALL crimes of violence are "thought crimes".

The proposal for requiring individuals to buy health care, by the way, came from a REPUBLICAN Senator, and NOT a progressive. It arose out of President Obama's futile and rather unwise attempt to make health care reform a bipartisan issue, and was not supported by a large number of progressives.

Progressives (regardless of the bull sh!t propaganda that you have been served up by Faux News and talk radio) do NOT believe in "equalizing monetary wealth". We simply believe that ALL members of society are entitled to such basic necessities of life as food, shelter, clothing, and health care. We are, frankly, quite mystified that so many people who claim to be Christians would so proudly and so angrily deny their brothers and sisters ANY share in the nation's wealth. We missed that part in the Sermon on the Mount when Jesus said "Blessed are the misers, for they and their trust-fund progeny shall inherit the Earth and all its exploitable resources for all eternity to the total exclusion of those shiftless, lazy, and starving bastards that I sneeringly refer to as the poor."

And who, exactly, has come for your guns? Certainly no one in THIS administration.

Glenn Dreck is far more than "... a WAAAAY over the deep end entertainer...". He is a prodigious liar, a fear monger, a racist, a sociopath, and a ruthless snake-oil salesman who recklessly manipulates the hatred, the anger, and the resentments of the right in order to further pad his already swollen wallet.
