Hmmm. Since in Beckworld, it's progressives who are always responsible for genocide, why shouldn't the mean ol' progressives be made to apologize?

In Beckworld, it doesn't matter because they're "brown" and he's never met an Armenian anyway.

I know several Armenians. Just this acknowledgment would mean a lot to them.

Right wingers really have no sense of humor, do they. By the way, interesting that a person who is constantly drawing on the Nazi movement of the 1930s would mock the recognition of the Armenian Genocide of 1915.

Excellent point... for someone (Becky) who claims to so profoundly "study" history... to mock and dismiss the proper framing of an historical event truly discredits his historical rants for he only cares about the history that frames the narrative he wants to sell.

And as far as their sense of humor, Neocon humor isn't funny because there are some fundamental truths that should be mocked. Mocking genocide is never funny to anyone... if you want to see what satirical humor and self-mocking is, check out Jon Stewart. Last night he had some bi-partisan self-mocking of Chatroulette.com which was hysterical and included the likes of Liz Clayman, Diane Sawyer, Keith Olbermann, Katie Couric, and Brian Williams.

Fox hosts (except Clayman from FBC) were not included in the mix partly because they don't jibe with TDS, plus they don't know self-depricating humor.

I love how Beck is mocking about someone looking backwards in history, like he never attempts to this. How can he make fun of the deaths of between 1 and 1.5 million Armenians? How can he even infer that anyone would think it was the U.S.'s fault when the Ottoman Empire was on the side of the Axis in WWI? And lastly, why does he continue to insult other countries?

Hey, I don't know or care about the "resolution" being invoked here, if it exists or whatever.

But truly, are we this easily distracted, that "resolutions" like this (and maybe there's an actual and stupid House Resolution at issue here) are important right now... interpreting century old history, non U.S. history at that, is important right now?

If we're going to distract ourselves historically, and make House Resolutions to that effect, then let's get serious and let's get real, let's talk about the WAR OF THE UNION (the Union of the United States), let's talk about that!

      But Armenia?

      Please, get real!

Get current, or at least get topical.

This is a resolution that has been brought up every year for quite a while now. It may not seem important to you, but there is a very large Armenian population here in the states and it is a big issue for them. The Rock band System of a Down is a very big advocate on this matter (They are all Armenian) and Glenn doesn't want to pi$$ them off.

          No one.

          What Justice is achieved?

          None.

What are the functions of government?

To make us swoon and feel all warm and fuzzy inside?

Witness the absolute stupidity and failure of such things, realize the truth of our political dissatisfaction, know what's pizzing off a super-majority of the American people presently...

The militarist nationalist Muslim Turks, versus the Christian nation-less Armenians...

I'm not stupid to history, I'm just focused on the present, and the tricks and traps of deception and distraction, is all.

Alrighty. Acknowledging history, in this case the Armenian genocide, is always, always, always fruitful. When we ignore past bad acts for potential profit, we must take responsibility for the consequences. Or, put another, better way, "Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes." Politics is perception, so an act that you dismiss as designed to "make us swoon and feel all warm and fuzzy inside" can contain far more long-term potency in the international arena than preemptively invading other countries on a whim. Besides, in cases like this, where the wrong done was denied for so long, stepping up at last and denouncing one of the darkest atrocities in human history is the right thing to do.

Thank you RadDave [and others here] for your input on this topic. I've been sitting here seething at the insensitivity of both Beck & his sidekick as well as Dem02020 unable to collect my thoughts...

My wife is Armenian. One set of her Grandparents escaped this genocide & fled to America. They are both gone now, but the existing Armenian community would still appreciate this acknowledgement of what happened to their families...finally.

I guess Dem02020 probably doesn't believe we should have acknowledged the holocaust either, after all according to his way of thinking, these weren't Americans being gassed so why bother...

I know Im going to get blasted over this but there were atrocities committed by both sides. unfortunately the Turks had more power and were therefore more efficient at slaughtering their so called enemies. this is in no way an apology for the mass murder carried out by the turkish govt and armed forces, its just that my research if correct states that there were pograms of Turks by Armenians as well

Americans have been involved in many activities that according to today's standards have been unsettling. If we interpret all of these less than honorable actions according to values we have today, we would say that they were quite despicable. First, Americans have been open and have discovered many unsavory things about our nation from the invasion of the Philippines to the despicable treatment of native Americans and African Americans.

We can despise the Germans killing 10 million people without being hypocritical if we acknowledge our own masacres of Indians at Washita and Sand Creek. I could go on.

By acknowledging the masacre of Armenians by Turks, we are recognizing that we have come a long way in our own growth. Prejudice is something that we all possess, no group is immune. Carried to extremes it leads to these unspeakable acts. By speaking about them, just maybe, we will grow and create an environment where we can solve our real problems--with the help of everyone--rather than saying, as Beck apparently does, that such actions are trivial.

Beck is insensitive, and the best thing he does is show us how stupid some of us can be.

You might want to read "A problem from hell". It takes a look at many places in the world where genocide has occurred and what role the US played. I believe too that the word genocide was first used to describe the mass killings of the Armenians.

The Turks are an important ally in NAYO, they provide land for strategic bases in the Middle East, and I think they provide troops in Afghanistan. Yesterday, they recalled their Ambassador to the U.S. This is a serious issue. A liberal journalist in Turkey was recently assassinated in Turkey because he wanted Turkey to admit to the genocide. But these guys want to laugh about it. Really funny there.

As I have had an assignment in a NATO headquarters, I can tell you that no one in NATO considers the Turks to be too important of an Ally. They are really treated like the weird step-brother that no one wants to hang out with all the time, but are allowed to occaisionally. They are really looked down upon by most of the European members of NATO.

I know that Turkish guest workers are much like Central American immigrants here, they are often undocumented, they are different, they are discriminated against, and lots of dirty jobs wouldn't get done without them. We may or may not like the Turks, but we need their bases and their air space for most of the stuff happening in the Middle East. The Obama Administration, and probably even the Bush Adminstration have spent a lot of time trying to court them, but I can see why NATO in Europe would look down on them.

We have only a small presence in Turkey to begin with and their airspace isn't that valuable anymore. Turkey caused us many headaches in Iraq just after the invasion with their crackdown on the Kurds there and even went into Iraq a few times to attack villages there. The Turks in Europe are treated the way they are because many of them are doing what many American perceive the illegal immigrants are doing here and that is living off the welfare of the state.
