HOW does he get that color? I remember using QT when I was much younger - that would turn you a nice shade of orange, but it wasn't nearly as consistent as Boner's skin. He looks just plain freaky.

Agreed. I also recall using QT and saying to myself, "Self, don't use that again. You look a bit strange." Clearly, Boner doesn't have that ability to look into the mirror and see that he looks like the rind of an orange. He would look good at a Denver Bronco game, however!

I have never been to a tanning salon, and I never will go to a tanning salon. My hide is pasty white, and I try to keep it that way. Now, if you want to tan, go right ahead, but it isn't necessary and it isn't good for you, and if you think you need to turn your skin into leather, pay the luxury tax to do so. Personally, I always thought this was payback to Boehner for being such a jerk, and it makes me smile.

Like I say downthread, this is like the constant complaining about the possibility of taxes on soda, candy, cigarettes, etc- there's an entire radio program ("Cigar Dave") dedicated to defending smokers from the evil Socialist-Marxist Obama Administration's plot to use the Pleasure Police to deprive us of our God-given right to coat our throats and lungs with tar by charging taxes on our stogies. Pathetic.

This is typical - MMfA is implying that Thompson is drawing conclusions based solely on the color of someone's skin, when in fact he's simply giving dark-skinned people the benefit of the doubt that they'll spend their welfare checks on food, not luxuries like tanning salons.

Come on, MMfA! Quit twisting peoples' words just to fill column space.

He feels the pain of racism. He now knows what it's like to fear for being lynched, to be belittled and marginalized and deprived of democratic rights and employment opportunities, because he may have to pay a little more to be given skin cancer while being turned orange. My a$$ bleeds for him.

Great idea! Honestly, Coca-Cola is a major vice of mine. I always gain weight if I have more than a soda a week. I've really struggled to limit myself, and I won't switch to Diet because it tastes nasty and gives me migraines. The point is, soda and fruit drinks (10% or less juice content) should never be part of a family's diet. They should be special treats, my mother knew that, lots of mothers in the neighborhood did, they thought it was scandalous if a family had KoolAid as a regular part of the diet. We were healthier and thinner than modern kids. There is nothing wrong with drinking water.

That's odd- the other day, I had a regular Coke for the first time in about twenty years (my brother in law brought drinks for us as we did work outside, and didn't know I drank Diet coke.) That night I had a really bad headache.

I'm pretty much addicted to Diet Coke, which is only marginally "better" for you than Coke, and coffee, but I recognize that these are luxuries and if I don't want to pay the tax, I can just stop indulging. I'm not going to demand that the "Government keeps it's hands off" stuff I happen to like.

I go biblical and just drink either water or wine. I only drink fruit juice if I've put organic fruit through my Jack Lalane juicer and drink it right away while all the enzymes and nutrients are fresh. Sodas and processed fruit juices are pretty much the same. Neither are good for you.

RE: Coca-Cola [TM]. I generally buy the 'house brand' cola (if it's any good.. and the current one I get is just about like The Real Thing...). If I were to want to get the Brand, I'd go for the imported from Mexico, where they use sugar instead of corn syrup. Taste is better, less health problems because of the real sugar. Also can't stand Pepsi because they load it with caramel, which can give me stomach problems and headaches after a couple glasses.

Darkness of skin is relative, and darker shades of skin deepen in color with exposure to UV just as lighter shades do. There are many reasons relatively darker-skinned people might choose to tan, most of them being the same reasons lighter-skinned people use.

So, Beck stand-in, whoever you are, you're at least as racist as you claim Obama to be. But based on your ignorance, I'm guessing you're a bit worse.

Being tan was looked down on for quite some time because only farmers were tan, and farmers were not the poster child for tans. Then leisure rich people went to the beach and got tan, and tanning was in. Living in Southern California, we sometimes had an opportunity to go to the beach, and Brigit Bardot had a nice tan. Never mind that there was a connection between UV rays and skin cancer. So someone invented indoor tanning with UV light.

So congress (majority white) passes a bill that puts a tax on tanning indoors. President (half white) signs it into law. Now that's discrimination--no question about it. Just like taxing rich people is discrimination--heck, most rich people are white aren't they? The frightening thing is that this is more sane then Beck, but that's not saying much.
