Given that it is Memorial Day, a day for remembering the dead, both those who have served in the military and family and friends, I don't want this comment to be taken the wrong way. I appreciate what veterans have done. My father was a WWII vet, an older brother served in Vietnam, and an older sister and brother were in the navy. I was prepared to go if necessary, but when I graduated from high school in 1975 Vietnam was ended and I thankfully didn't have to go. But my comment is this: Veterans and their spokespersons seem to think that the only way to serve your country is to be in the military. Again, while I appreciate what they have done for us, I reject the notion that failure to serve in the military is somehow a failure to serve your country. And to trumpet your service in a political context demeans what you have done. Moreover, as a teacher I fell that I am serving my country as I do my best to educate the youth of this country. I think that most people are serving their country in one way or another by the jobs they work, volunteering to help others in local soup kitchens, Habitat for Humanity, etc.

WhileAWhile I appreciate your sentiment in your statement, I must object to part of your statement. You said "veterans," and as a veteran and a retiree of the army, I can tell you that not all feel this way. I appreciate one's service to the country in other ways, it's the chickenhawks I have a real problem with.

Whenever the chickenhawks start clucking about Veterans and show their true color(yellow), I think of the misunderstandings about the classic Robert A. Heinlein novel Starship Troopers. In it, in order to gain citizenship and the right to vote, one has to have done Public Service, and most tend to think that means The Military. In the book, and a later essay by RAH, he said that Military Service wasn't the only way to 'serve'... there were plenty of Civilian jobs that would fulfill the 'service' requirement.

Since Fox is Fair and Balanced, I'm sure they will interview the founder of VoteVets.org and talk about the 10 candidates they promote.

It's okay for them but not for everyone else. When was talking about how mean vets serve in congress wounder if he knows that most of them are Democrats? To think that a Republican would know what it is like to have served in the Armed Forces is laughable.

When I was in I served for all Americans not for the Oil Companies.

I'd think so... I don't mean to sound disrespectful, but I really don't see how being in the military makes one any more or less qualified for government.

How about a candidate that's not interested in a cushy lobbying retirement job? Is that too substantial for a political viewpoint, today?

It all depends on who's running.

For wingnuts and/or chickenhawks, if there's a Democrat running for president with no prior military service [Clinton, Obama], that lack of service renders them "unfit to serve as Commander in Chief."

However, if there's a Democrat running for president who has prior military service [Gore, Kerry], that service is either to be dismissed altogether [Gore], or denigrated [Kerry] . . .

Also, even though we're supposed to have separation of church and state, they had BETTER be a devout Christian.

            Ugh. Ridiculous.

I'm sure if Rupert knew about this he'd say it was wrong. Hell, the facade fell off Fox long ago. The only people still taking them seriously are the D-Baggin' TeaBaggers. They're a joke of a network inciting crazy people to violence so they can keep their enormous tax advantage over middle class Americans.
