Regardless how Obama's Presidency ultimately turns out, one day people will look back in amazement at how many major problems this President had to deal with in short succession.

Indeed. He inherited a Hoover-sized economic mess (and the only reason we're not in a depression is that economists have learned their lesson better than the banks have), along with two wars, weakened alliances, a nuclear-armed North Korea, a nearly-nuclear Iran, massive deficits, poisoned politics, and a nonexistent regulatory structure nearly everywhere - and that was just the stuff his predecessor is responsible for. Add to that a broken health care system, endemic corporate influence in Congress, a radical Supreme Court, a failing alliance with Israel, and the inevitable specter of American decline, and it's pretty clear that Obama has the toughest presidency in most Americans' lifetimes. Only FDR had greater challenges of any president in the last 100 years - and he had much bigger Democratic majorities to play with, along with an opposition party that was principled rather than intransigent.

All in all, outside of serious civil liberties concerns, I'm happy with what Obama's done so far.

          Agreed.

And I'm getting really sick and tired of these idiots on the Right, blindly attcking anything and everything, completely without any substance (or credability) at all, all the while accusing us of blindly defending him, even though he "lacks substance." It's completely absurd.

The Obama critics on the Right are nothing but a bunch of whining, lying, little losers. His critics on the LEFT? Some of THEM have apoint, but these conservatives... They've got NOTHIN'. They fit perfectly into what I always say about conservatives:

There are just two types: Evil and Stupid. One's lying and the other buying.

I will say there are plenty of critics on the left who are mainly unrealistic whiners rather than principled critics ("if Obama was more liberal, we'd have single-payer! Let's front a primary challenge!"), and a handful of conservative critics with legitimate points and concerns, but yes: most critics on the right are baseless morons.

Actually, what I really like is that their criticism always goes like this:
"Obama's the weakest, most ineffectual critic since Jimmy Carter!"
"Obama's unbridled power threatens the very way of American life!"

Don't those seem mutually exclusive? There's also probably their most baseless criticism: "Obama's weak on terror!" Not only is Obama far more ruthless and effective than Bush ever was - so much so that it's become the central point of liberal and international criticism - the fact that people like Karl Rove and Dick Cheney say it is the very worst of political hypocrisy.

Didn't the GOP say the same about Bush?

I think that the Bush Presidency was defined by 9-11. He could have used that awful day to create a presidency that really defined America in the 21st century. Instead, he told us to go shopping. And, more importantly, got us involved in a war that never should have been waged. The simple fact is that policy in this country is forged around crisis situations - attacks, war, economic collapse, threats, etc. I realize that the Rethugs love using this as a talking point today, but if you look at history it is absolutely true. My only hope is that Obama will forge a rational energy plan out of this situation. We are going to need to continue to drill for oil, but the need to find alternative sources is staring us dead in the face.

Republicants criticize Obama for securing a $20 billion fund from BP. How many nanoseconds will it be before these same two-faced Republicants are digging into the pile of money?

Just like they were united against the stimulus fund before they individually used the stimulus fund.

People are critical of the oval office speech but last night BP's tv adds notififying Gulf residents of the now open claims offices and the procedures to take to file a claim, was significant. Actions not words?

They [including Olbermann and Matthews] were criticizing his promise of the escrow account Tuesday night. Last night they were criticizing him for not establishing the escrow account BEFORE the speech so he could have reveled in it.

That's why I don't watch much of the cable opinion networks' BS. It's all for show.

Joe Scarborough has become the voice of reason, and Mika has been steadfastly defending Obama on this issue. It's an amazing turnaround since the 09 Summer of Teabaggery.

Not sure what changed their minds, but I'm glad to see it.

It's the party of "HELL NO!!!!" How do you find compromise with people who take that stance? You don't. Eventually, you run them over and say you had your chance and all you did was throw a tantrum. Well, you have made it clear that you won't be responsive so you got what you have asked for. You want bipartisanship? HELL NO!!!
